Choosing the Right Magnet
4
The most important criteria in selecting the magnet for your application are:
• Type of Material to be Handled • Physical and Electrical Capabilities• Material Temperature • Duty Cycle
With the criteria defined, Ohio Magnetics can recommend liftingmagnet systems that offer daily high productivity as well asmany years of uninterrupted service.
Ohio Magnetics offers a complete range of products that canhandle almost any ferrous metal handling application, but, let’s narrow things down and answer the most often askedquestions by prospective magnet users:
WHY ALUMINUM VERSUS COPPER?Generally speaking, a lifting magnet with an aluminum wound coilis a preferable design for most applications because the price economicsgenerally outweigh the slightly added lifting capacity of a copper-coil magnet.Although copper does exhibit more mechanical strength as compared toaluminum, Ohio Magnetics goes to great lengths to assure that the mechanicalstrength of the protective manganese bottom plate adequately shields the coil from damage.
For hot metal applications (150º C and up), invariably a copper-wound coil is used more often since thethermal properties of copper are superior to that of aluminum.
WHY A CAST MAGNET VERSUS FABRICATED?The answer is very simply....LIFE. Ohio’s cast magnet case designs offer many years of initial life as well as economic repair ability with a cast magnet case that can be repaired over and over without the worry of replacing the major components of a fabricated case. It is really quite common for the Ohio Magnetics’factory to repair cast case lifting magnets that are 30-35 years old to like new condition.
WHY CHOOSE OHIO MAGNETICS?Because we not only consider the basic application that is presented to us for quoting. We realize that we aredesigning and selling powerful equipment and therefore take very seriously our obligation to provide effectiveand safe equipment to our customers that will not only be an economic initial purchase, but a long termvalue. You have our word on it....OHIO.

Magnets and their related power equipment are interdependent on one anotherand, properly matched and maintained, work together to offer highproductivity and long life. Therefore, selecting the magnet controller, generator, or DC power supply that are right for your magnet isquite important. Ohio Magnetics power equipment is alldesigned for the toughest applications, and therefore, can bematched to your magnet selection by simply knowing the volts, amperes, and kilowatt requirements.
MAGNET CONTROLLERS
Most magnets operate at 230 VDC which is the optimum DCvoltage for magnet designs. For selecting the proper controller, youneed only select a size that will accommodate the cold amperagedraw of the magnet. Other voltages are available upon request from the Ohio Magnetics’ factory and would be based upon the voltage and amperes specified for your magnet.
MAGNET GENERATORS
Magnet generators normally used on mobile cranes are sized in termsof output voltage and output KW. To properly size your generator, you need only know the voltage and cold KW of your magnet. * Cold KW is calculated by multiplying Volts X cold amps.
All Ohio generators, whether belt driven or engine driven, areClass H Insulated, of drip-proof construction and are suitablefor use in all environments. This makes your selection processmuch simpler.
Choosing the Right Power Equipment
* Example: 230 Volts X 50 Cold Amps =11,500 cold watts or 11.5 Cold KW

DC POWER SUPPLIES (RECTIFIERS)
Similar to magnet service generators, DC Power Supplies (Rectifiers),normally used on fixed locations such as wall-mount or directlymounted to an overhead crane, are sized based upon AC InputVoltage, DC Output Voltage, and KW Output.
To select the proper DC Power Supply, you need only find youravailable plant power (normally 240 VAC or 480 VAC 3 PH 60HZ in the U.S.) and the voltage/cold KW requirements of the magnet.
While all NEMA 12 (IP-55) Enclosures are standard with all Ohio DCPower Supplies, NEMA 4 (IP-66), 4X (IP-66) and NEMA 3R (IP-32)options are available. It is important that you consider the environmentin which you place your DC Power Supply so as to keep the unit dryand dust-free.
Also available from Ohio are a number of controls and monitoringoptions, such as power on/off switching both local and remote andvoltage/current metering, that you may want to consider.
In addition to the basic operating equipment required in amagnet system, Ohio offers a complete line of accessoriesdesigned to provide productivity, safe operation, and easiermaintenance such as:
• Cables Reels for mobile and overhead cranes
• Magnets combined for use with a grapple
• Magnet Safety Disconnects
• Microprocessor – based maintenance diagnostics packages
• Emergency Power Systems (battery back-ups)

Bi-polar MagnetsStandard and Special Ohio Bi-Polar Magnet Designs and Options
Available in various standard widths: 8", 12", 13", 19"and 22", this model is also available in special widthsto meet any application. Renewable or auxiliary poleshoes can be supplied for all sizes. Shoes convertstandard magnets for special handling and thenreconvert to regular magnets quickly and easily forroutine material handling.
Design Advantages
A unique advantage of the Ohio Bi-Polar magnets istheir capability to handle higher temperature materialwhen compared to standard rectangular magnets. One reason is that the coil is positioned higher in themagnet design and farther away from the hot materialload. Another is, there are fewer square inches ofmagnet pole area which come into contact with thehot material on a Bi-Polar magnet design. As a result, less heat is transferred from the hot material to themagnet allowing it to retain a greater percentage of itslifting ability on high temperature loads.

Automatic Drop
OHIO Controllers are standard with this feature. One movement of the master lever control switch orpushbutton to the Drop position and the controllerwill automatically sense the exact amount of reversecurrent required to drop the load off the magnet.Once the magnet is clean of ferrous metal anotheroperation may begin.
Manual Drop
OHIO Controllers are available in an optionalmanually controlled version. This allows the operatorto precisely control the length of time required tofully clean the magnet of ferrous metal by holding thelever or pushbutton in the Drop position. Once themagnet is clean of ferrous metal another operation may begin. This feature is used when the dribbling of scrap is desired by moving the master lever switch to theOFF position. This allows the magnetism to slowly dissipate through the discharge resistors. When the operatordesires to fully release the load, simply move the switch to the Drop position and hold it there until the magnetis clean. The master lever switch will automatically return to the OFF position when manually released.
Mounting Position
All OHIO Controllers are to be wall mounted in the vertical “UP” position. Standard enclosures are NOTweather proof. Select a location which avoids excessive moisture, oil and dirt.

Magnet circuits, which are highly inductive, occasionally require disconnection while the magnet is energized. Standard knife or safety switches are not capable of breaking this highly inductive magnet energy.
Ohio Magnetics’ magnet disconnect switch interruptsthe magnet circuit by using a quick break switch with a permanently connected power diode and powerresistor* across negative and positive of the switchoutput. The power diode directs the discharge currentfrom the negative to positive while blocking thenormal currents from positive to negative. The powerresistor* dissipates the stored energy of the inductivemagnet circuit. The switch is polarity sensitive.Inputand output power leads must be connected asindicated by markings.
* 30 A and 60 A switches do not require power resistor.

Ohio Magnetics’ DC Power Supplies for liftingmagnets are available in both a fixed voltage output(usually 230 VDC or 115 VDC) and a variable output(usually 0-230 VDC or 0-300 VDC).
Fixed voltage output type DC Power Supplies areused in most general magnet applications. Variablevoltage supplies are used in applications of fanning,boost/carry, flux reduction, constant flux regulation, etc. Voltage outputs can be set via potentiometers forvoltage limit-current regulation or current limit-voltage regulation.
Because the cold current of the magnet is 30% to50% greater than the operating current, the powersupply must be sized for the cold rating of the magnet at 25º C.

REMOVES TRAMP IRON, EVEN ON FAST CONVEYORS!
Nearly one hundred years of expertise and leadership in the designand development of magnetic equipment is behind every Stearnselectromagnetic pulley. Now, more than ever, with the verygrowing emphasis on production efficiency and reducedoperation cost in industry, Stearns experience in pulley design isimportant to simple, effective means of magnetic separation andprotection in normal material handling conveyor processes–without altering the present system. You can select a pulley thatwill assure positive separation of ferrous materials at belt speedsas high as 500 FPM. Stearns Pulleys feature:
• Rugged Heavy Duty Designs • Deep Field Penetration • Can be used for Specialized Sizing and Magnetic Separation with
an Ohio Magnetics/Stearns Variable Voltage Rectifier
Principle of OperationFor purification and tramp iron protection, the magnetic pulley is installed as a headpulley in the belt conveyor handling bulk materials. Ferrous material is attracted towardthe face of the pulley, then carried around past the influence of the magnet for discharge,non-magnetic material passes over pulley in normal trajectory, providing continuousautomatic separation.

STEARNS OVER-THE-BELT PERMANENT SUSPENDED MAGNETS WITH POWER
Powerful Stearns permanent magnets giveyou all the tramp iron removal abilitywithout the use of DC power. Our new, exclusive magnetic circuit designmaximizes magnetic penetration, providespositive and economic, tramp ironremoval. This product assists you by:
• Eliminating DC power costs • Eliminating coils, oil tanks and wiring • Guarantees to remain energized at 99%
efficiency for the next 100 years • Offers fast, easy installation at sharply
reduced costs
The Stearns magnet design produces a magnetic field that is notonly deep enough for full penetration at the center of theconveyor, but also extends outward for complete tramp ironremoval at the edges of the burden. Units are complete with amanually operated discharge arm for tramp iron removal. Alsoavailable in self-cleaning models.
For an extra measure of protectionfrom tramp iron, or for increasedproduct cleaning, combinationmagnetic units are frequentlyinstalled. This is especially thecase in foundry sand cleaningsystems.
A typical double pass system (seeillustration) would incorporate across-belt separator, which wouldprovide the initial tramp iron removal, anda magnetic pulley at the head of the conveyor belt to remove any fine splatter and shot.
Another type of dual protection system utilizes a parallel-mounted magnet or cross-beltseparator and a Stearns high sensitivity Metal Detector. This is used primarily in miningoperations where some of the "tramp" is non-magnetic, but is just as damaging. The magnet willremove the iron and steel objects, and farther up the conveyor line the Stearns Metal Detectorwill unerringly detect the presence of non-ferrous metals such as manganese steel, stainlesssteel and brass.
Stearns Combination Units Provide theUltimate in Removal and Protection!

These separators provide automatic and continuous removal oftramp iron in process industries, including: ceramics, chemicals, foods, grain, minerals, plastics, rubber and tobacco. TheCeramic 8 Separator offers positive protection and low cost, lifetime dependability. Inspired by the design advantages of theCeramic 8, Stearns engineers pioneered a new era in thedevelopment of efficient magnetic separation equipment. In theCeramic 8, the exclusive ceramic magnet assembly produces auniform magnetic field…to 40% more powerful than inordinary permanent magnet systems.
Here is a unit that is ideal for process industries wherever granular or pulverized materials are conveyed inclosed chutes and spouts. The Ceramic 8 Drum Separator continuously and automatically removes tramp iron, carries it out of the material flow and returns a clean product to the production process.
In operation, the Ceramic 8 Drum Separator consists of a revolving non-magnetic cylinder inside a steel weldedhousing. Material is fed onto the cylinder at the top and is carried over the stationary magnet assembly (seeillustration). The deep uniform field attracts and holds tramp iron particles beyond the discharge of the clean,non-magnetic product. Tramp iron is released into a separate discharge as it passes out of the magnetic field.
IDEAL FOR SPOUT SYSTEMS!

Wet drum separators are used in magnetic mediarecovery, purification of solids carried in liquidsuspension and in iron ore concentration. Stearnshas developed a specific line of separators forhandling slurries developed in heavy media plants. These heavy media plants require:
1. Magnetic separators which recover magnetics contained in feed slurries as efficiently as possible, to reduce the per ton/media consumption of treated product to a minimum.
2. Recovery of magnetic solids in as clean a magnetic concentrate as possible, to keep the separating bath at a low viscosity, and to eliminate a misplaced product.
3. A high gravity magnetic discharge to eliminate, in many instances, the need for a densifier. A high gravity concentrate simplifies plant operation.
4. Trouble-free operation with minimum down time, minimum operator attention and minimum cost.
One of the features of Stearns magnetic separator is its ability to handle widely fluctuating fluids. Thus, applications can be found lying outside the service limits indicated. However, the limits outlined below arebasic guide lines which assure efficient magnetic separator performance. These guide lines will indicate changes that can be made in existing plants to improve media recovery efficiency. Each factor must beconsidered jointly for each individual application. FEED VOLUME*…Feed volume should not exceed 75 gpm/ft. of magnet width on a 30 in. diameter single drum separator. If feed volumes up to 90 gpm/ft. must behandled, a double-drum separator (rougher-scavenger model), in which the primary drum tailing and overflow product are sent to the secondary drum, should be applied. Efficient magnetic recovery cannot beexcepted at rates beyond 90 gpm/ft. PERCENT SOLIDS in FEED*…The ratio of magnetic solids to non-magnetic solids cannot be efficiently insolated from total percent solids in evaluating magnetic recovery. As ageneral rule, the limiting recommended feed solids in a media recovery circuit is 50%. Variations of the ratio of magnetics to non-magnetics solids within this solids range can produce many potential feed flurries. The recommended maximum percent of solids for a single drum separator is 15% for con-current separators, 20% solids maximum can be tolerated without losing magnetic efficiency. Beyond 20% solids double-drum separators (rougher-scavenger) are recommended. In cases where the feed slurry goes above 30% solids, which sometimes occurs when a cyclone is being used to thicken a dilute rinse slurry product, sufficient water should be added in the feed box of the primary separator to bring it down to the 30% solids figure. % OF MAGNETICS IN FEED SOLIDS OF THE RINSE SLURRY*…The ratio to non-magnetic solidswill influence the purity of the concentrated obtained. The non-magnetic content tends to deter magnetic cleaning when the non-magnetic to magnetic ratio exceeds 40% by weight. If the feed pulp is sufficientlydiluted (below 20% solids), purity of the magnetic concentrate will not be seriously affected at the 40% figure. When the total solids figure exceeds 20%, and when the non-magnetic to magnetic solids ratioexceeds 40%, it is difficult to obtain a high purity concentrate. This lopsided condition usually occurs in plants using reclaimed water and is alleviated by pulp dilution; or by running the media through the magneticseparator while the plant is not running, thus further rejecting non-magnetics. A primary limitation in magnetic separator selection, influenced by percent magnetics in the solids, is the magnetic discharge loadingon the magnetic separator. Single-drum 30 in. diameter con-current separators should be limited to 3 tph of magnetic discharge per ft. of magnet width. These magnetic discharge limits are suggested in line withgood magnetic cleaning at good magnetic recovery efficiencies. Counter-current separators can retain magnetic recovery at a sacrifice in magnetic cleaning at a discharge rate 30% higher than the above figures. Adouble-drum magnetic separator will permit the magnetic discharge rate to increase to as much as 30% above the indicated single-drum rate. Optimum magnetic cleaning and recovery at this increased rate can beobtained with a double-drum separator with con-current primary drum and a counter-current secondary drum as indicated on Page 26 in Figure #4. The counter-current separator is selected when feedcharacteristics are variable as to tonnage of magnetic solids and feed volumes. Efficient washing of the drum must be provided at the magnetic discharge point to prevent carry over of the magnetics on the drum.DOUBLE DRUM TYPE WPD SEPARATORS…Double Drum separators are available in two basic types, depending on tank configuration use: 1. Double con-current tank arrangement shown on Page 26 in Figure #3.2. Con-current primary with counter-current secondary shown on Page 26 in Figure #4. Double drum separators will either: Give a higher magnetic recovery as compared to single drum units when operated atrecommended 75 gpm/ft. 30" diameter or 95 gpm/ft. for 36" diameter volume; or will permit higher feed volumes while obtaining the same recovery as can be reached at lower rates on single drum separators. * NOTE: Add 20% to the above volume on magnetic discharge rate for 36" diameter models.
Five basic factors influence proper selection of a magneticseparator in terms of drum diameter, magnetic width, and type of wet drum separator for use in a specific application. These are:
1. Volume of Slurry to be Handled 2. Percent of Solids in Rinse Slurry 3. Percent of Magnetics in Feed Solids of the Rinse Slurry 4. Required Magnetics Recovery Efficiency 5. Cleanliness Required in the Magnetic

CON-CURRENT SINGLE DRUM TYPE WPD
The con-current tank arrangement is shown in Figure 1.This separator is probably the most commonly used type in heavy media today. It gives:
1. Minimum wear on the cylinder, since it introduces the feed slurry in the same direction as the drum is traveling.
2. Maximum cleaning of magnetic solids since all recovered magnetics must traverse the full magnet arc and be subjected to numerous changes in magnet polarity.
3. Material passing wash spray is automatically returned to feed point, possibly of magnetic loss reduced.
4. Highest magnetic solids discharge since it produces best squeezing action at magnetic discharge point and can be operated with a minimum wash spray or with a drum wiper, if necessary.
COUNTER-CURRENT SINGLE DRUM TYPE WPD
The counter-current tank arrangement is shown in Figure 2.The counter-current separator’s advantages include:
1. Maximum Magnetic Recovery, since the magnetics are recovered and transported a short distance into the magnetic discharge chute. Magnetics missed in the initial pick-up are scavenged out by the remaining poles of the magnet assembly. However, the short recovery zone does reduce the cleanliness of the magnetic concentrate.
2. Heavy Magnetic Loads can be handled without serious reduction of high magnetic recovery, due to the short transportation and scavenging features.
3. Less susceptibility to loss of magnetic efficiency at high feed volumes. Feeds as high as 80 gpm/ft. can be handled efficiently on this counter-current separator.
4. Magnetic discharge on feed side of separator. This sometimes makes plant layout easier.

Stearns’ DC Power supplies for electro separation magnets are available inboth fixed voltage outputs (usually 230 VDC or 115 VDC) and availablevariable voltage output (usually 0-115 or 0-230 VDC). Fixed voltage outputtype DC power supplies are used in most general magnet applications.Variable voltage supplies are used in applications of flux reduction orconstant flux regulation. Voltage outputs are set via potentiometers forvoltage limit-current regulation. Because the cold current of a magnet is25% to 30% greater than the operating current, the power supply must besized for the cold rating of the magnet at 25°C.
