She told St. Dominic:“One Day through theRosary and Scapular I will save the World”
It’s not a hoax! I don’t hesitate to change my mind when I find out that I could be wrong about something. As some know I do have some experience in that area. When, in February, while in Assisi, Italy rumors of a “pandemic” surfaced, I must admit, my first reaction was, “This cannot be!” Instant denial! As time went on, I received emails from friends and family in the USA indicating a genuine concern for the safety of my brother and I. We both said to each other, “What are they talking about?” As the lockdown took affect in Assisi, we were still confused about whether or not what was happen-ing was real. Others with us there were saying the same thing. I think it became real as we left Italy on an Alitalia Flight, 777 jumbo jet with only ten of us aboard. I didn’t want to believe this “thing” called a “pandemic” was real and yet, God help us, it was beginning to seem like it was certainly a possibility. I was surprised to hear many people, even today, call it all a “hoax.” At times, I wondered if it could possibly be so, and yet as the death count continued to climb to new heights I was afraid to admit, this is really happening. My doubts again became apparent when our own community had been fortunate enough to have had only one known case, but ap-parently that has now changed. As a diabetic, I am told that personally, I am considered to be high risk at catching the Covid-19 virus. That warning was starting to hit closer to home. The objections to the guidelines issued by the bishop and our local government were intense and still are. They were met with harsh and strong criticism. But, last Wednes-day I received a heartbreaking phone call informing one of my dearest friends had died that day from Covid-19. The pandemic had come to rest on my brother and I with the heartbreaking loss of one of our dearest friends. This is not a hoax! Our friend caught the virus from another person she was in contact with and “it” was fast and furious and there was no doubt, no guess work, no question. Our friend is one of the thousands who died because of Covid-19. It’s not a hoax! I know there are some who still believe it is. Taking precautions are rare here and many other places around our country. And I wonder why. Perhaps even I have been care-less. My masks are not as well worn as they should be. They will be from now on. And it saddens me that others are not concerned about the safety of others or me. With confirmed positive cases getting closer to us, may I please suggest we all take another look at what is happening with new eyes and more understanding. Recently, I had been asked to wear a mask when distrib-uting Holy Communion. I will be doing so, for my sake and for that of others. I have also asked Deacon Ken to do the same. I must admit I was disappointed that the bishop lifted the restriction on receiving Holy Communion only in the hand. I know putting my fingers into the mouth of another person at a time when we are trying to maintain safe and secure measures doesn’t seem to make sense. For those who insist on receiving Holy Communion on the tongue, extra sanitizing is mandatory before and after reception for each person.
Some days I wish this was all a bad dream, but with the death of a dear friend and the cases getting closer to home, I know this is not a hoax! I pray for better understanding and cooperation among our people and myself. Are we all praying enough and often for our community and our world? Why wouldn’t we? After all, “It’s not a hoax!”

vocation view—Good and evil together in the world. Pray that good may grow and take root in you like a mustard seed that, when full-grown, is the largest of plants. What are you doing to nurture good in our world? (Matthew13:24-43)
Reading I : Wisdom 12:13, 16-19Your might is the source of justice. The lesson for God’s people in the reading from the Book of
Wisdom is twofold. As God is merciful, so should the people be merciful to those
who offend them.Because God is merciful, the people may live in hope that
God will forgive their sins.
Reading II : Romans 8:26-27The Spirit helps us pray.Paul, in the Letter to the Romans, continues his proclamation
of the power of God’s Spirit. It is God’s Spirit who understands and is divine Wisdom. That Spirit has been given to Christians that they might be
children of God, like God.
Gospel : Matthew 13:24-43The Reign of God is among us.The two parables of the weed seed planted among the crops,
and the leaven in the woman’s bread, make the point that the Kingdom of God may look small in Jesus’ ministry and preaching, but its growth will be rapid and thorough.
The parable of the weeds in the wheat makes the point that
Sunday Readings and Backgrounds16th Sunday in Ordinary Time • Week of July 19
good and bad cannot be separated without harming the good.
God’s people must trust divine wisdom as they face the evil in the world.
It is not likely that a farmer or gardener would follow the householder’s example in the Gospel. Left unchecked, weeds will compete with plants for water, sunlight, and nutrients. At best, the good plants will not bear as much fruit. At worst, they will wither and die. Good farmers keep their land as free of weeds as possible. Yes, pulling up weeds that are mixed in with plants may damage the crop, but allowing them to grow together just gives them more opportunity to damage the crop. However, as Jesus reveals to his disciples, parables are not meant to be taken literally. God, the wise and merci-ful judge, is patient with the weeds, allowing them to grow to completion. Growth implies change. Change effected by the Spirit, who comes to the aid of human weakness, is transformative. Throughout the human growing season—our lifetimes—there remains hope for even the most wicked of weeds.
Saint Mary MagdaleneFeast Day is July 22 Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50. Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication at the worst, of extreme de-monic possession or possibly, severe illness. Writing in the New Catholic Commentary, Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Edward Mally, SJ, agrees that she “is not…the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.” Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the “Apostle to the Apostles.”
