Save The Sound,

Please join us April 20, 2010 for a free, hands-on classroom workshop on rain garden design and construction. Learn how rain gardens help soak up rainwater from downspouts, driveways, and sidewalks while protecting our local waterways. When planted with the right types of plants, rain gardens also attract birds, butterfl ies and bees.

A rain garden consists of native trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses planted in composted-amended soils in a shallow

depression and strategically placed to effectively capture rainwater and slowly infi ltrate it into the ground. Rain

gardens work like native forests by capturing and infi ltrating stormwater from rooftops, driveways, and other hard surfaces.

Rain gardens reduce localized fl ooding; help recharge groundwater aquifers; provide benefi cial wildlife habitat; and fi lter oil, grease

and toxic materials before they can pollute local waterways.

Workshops are free and registration is required. Contact the Pierce Stream Team at (253) 845-2973 or [email protected]

to register and for more information. This workshop is made possible thanks to: Peninsula Light, Stewardship Partners, Pierce Stream Team, WSU

Cooperative Extension, and the Green Partnership Fund.

Water Leak Facts• A 1/8 inch hole in a metal pipe at 40 psi leaks

2,500 gallons of water in 24 hours.• A leak the size of a pinhead can waste 360,000

gallons per year, enough to fi ll 12,000 bathtubs to the overfl ow mark.

• A leaking toilet can use 90,000 gallons of water in 30 days.

• A dripping faucet or hose bib can lose up to 180 gallons a month or 2,160 gallons per year.

• About one in every 20 pools has a leak.• About one in every 318 homes or buildings

has a leak.• A typical toilet leak at today’s rate can add

$500 to a single water bill.• One trip through a car wash uses 150 gallons

of drinking water.• Collecting water for gardening from the faucet

while waiting for hot water saves about 250 gallons of water a month.

• Using a broom to clean the sidewalk instead of a hose saves 150 gallons of water.
