b A snake kills Eurydice. f Orpheus and Eurydice are together again.

c Orpheus crosses a river to the Underworld. g Orpheus looks back.

d Orpheus kills monsters. h Eurydice says goodbye to Orpheus.

3 Now watch a modern version of Orpheus and Eurydice’s myth at www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQFG8HVWiqA. Then make notes about the differences and similarities you find between the video and the text on pages 120 and 121. Discuss the answers as a class and say which version you like best.

1 In pairs, read Sir Orfeo’s legend and find Celtic and medieval elements. Circle the Celtic elements and underline the medieval ones. Remember that the Celts believed in fairies as spirits of the forest.

Orfeo is sad. He leaves his castle and he takes his harp with him. Orfeo lives in

the forest now. One day, he sees the fairies, their king and... Herodis! He follows

them. Orfeo goes into a cave. This is a new world for him. Orfeo is in the world of

the fairies. He is in a beautiful castle. There are many people there. Orfeo says he

is a musician. He plays a song for the king. The king loves Orfeo’s music. He offers

Orfeo a present. Orfeo and Herodis go back to England. People are happy. They

have a king and a queen protect them again.
