From the PrincipalDear Parents

Our Lindisfarne school is growing swiftly as news spreads of the educational, social, performing, sporting and pastoral opportunities we give to our students. Enrolments are consequently growing. There are waiting lists in Year groups for entry to our school. Enhanced facilities and potential new buildings such as our soon-to-be-opened Trade Skills Centre, are attracting even further interest and enrolments. Due to this growth we will now have a new role in the School

in the capacity of Deputy Principal. This will involve the day to day running of the School P - 12 in all areas and enable the Principal to be involved in higher level strategic matters for the development of broader school issues.

Advertisements for the position will be in this Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald and The Courier Mail.

Science in 6AFThis term we have been investigating solids and liquids. We have discovered that solids have tightly packed particles and hold their shape whereas liquids have loosely packed particles, don’t hold their shape and can be poured. We have performed a number of experiments that test the properties of solids and liquids. Our favourite experiment so far was when we made slime. The purpose of this experiment was to determine if slime was a solid or liquid. We mixed corn flour, green food colouring and water together. It was interesting to discover that when we mixed the slime slowly it was runny and didn’t hold its shape, like a liquid, but when we applied pressure and mixed it quickly it became hard and held its shape for a short time, like a solid. Slime has properties of both a solid and a liquid. This substance is called a colloid.

Our Service Exceeds ExpectationsThe below email was recently received from a parent from the Lindisfarne community regarding the recent Year 4 camp.

“I just wanted to email you, as well as the other teachers involved in the Year 4 camp.

My son had an absolutely wonderful time. He has not stopped talking about the terrific things that he did. I just wanted to say a massive thank you to you, for all your care and empathy towards our kids.

I am a teacher who has been on many camps and I realise how tough they can be. The children had a wonderful time and that is an absolute testament to you all.

All I can say is, sleep well and thank you for all that you bring to the teaching profession.”

From the Assistant Principal - Head of PrimaryNational Day of Action Against Bullying and ViolenceLindisfarne will be part of a growing nationwide movement to ‘Take a Stand Together’ against bullying and violence and to recognise that schools, parents and students need to work together to create supportive school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence,

The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 20 March 2015. Every class will be participating in a variety of activities to explore and reiterate the anti bullying message further. Children will be given a wrist band to wear on the day and take home. It would be wonderful to continue the conversation with your children at home to ensure our safe and caring environment at Lindisfarne continues for all.

Brain BoosterIn traditional classrooms, students sit for long periods of time while important concepts are taught. Heaven forbid that any student should be out of their seat during this process! Yet neuroscience has confirmed that movement for instructional reasons enhances memory for learning.

exercise boosts brain power

• Our brains were built for walking – nineteen kilometres per day

• To improve your thinking skills, move.• Exercise gets blood to your brain, bringing it glucose for

energy and oxygen to soak up the toxic electrons that are left over. It also stimulates the protein that keeps neurons connecting.

• Aerobic exercise just twice a week halves your risk of general dementia. It cuts your risk of Alzheimer’s by sixty percent.Extract from Brain Rules: 12 Principles for surviving

and thriving at work, home and school by John Medina

KindergartenTerrific Tuesday Kindergarten Rotations

Each ‘Terrific Tuesday’, all three Kindergarten classes are involved in ‘Kindergarten Rotations’, an exciting part of our weekly timetable. Each class enjoys a half an hour session with each of the three teachers.

With Miss Rolfe, the students participate in gross motor program, working on developing skills such as

jumping, hopping, skipping, balancing, rolling and climbing.

Miss Rogers teaches the children about Core Values and Social Skills – they have been learning how to be a ‘bucket filler’ and treat others with respect and kindness so that both people’s imaginary buckets are full.

Mr Pettit covers Science and currently Kindergarten is learning about where our food comes from and how to make healthy food choices.

These weekly rotations are a lovely way for all students to get to know the other Kindergarten teachers and for staff to get to know all the new faces in our care. The rotations have already become a highly anticipated part of our timetable.

PreschoolIn Preschool we have been fostering a sense of belonging, which plays an integral part in supporting children’s ability to learn and develop. This is created through building strong relationships with their teachers and peers and through feeling a sense of connection with their learning environment.

Recently in Preschool Possums we helped to strengthen the children’s sense of belonging as we worked collaboratively to develop our imaginative play space. The children suggested making a pirate ship and worked together to construct props, create artworks and costumes and problem solve to extend on their imaginative play. This imaginative play led us to investigating world maps, drawing treasure maps, investigating texts about boats, sea and pirates and exploration of different cultures.

For our next transformation of the home space, the children have suggested creating an ‘ice castle’ and have already started brainstorming on what materials we will need.
