b Ease of setting-upThe vision controller has on-board software that can be parametered. The setting-up of the vision controller is simple and user-friendly.

b Ease of installationSmall in size, the vision controllers can easily be integrated in the production chain:v connections on front face,v inputs/outputs with cabling on removable terminal block,v mounting on rail by clip-on fixing.

It incorporates an automatic trigger and has the automatic position adjustmentfunction.

Operating principleHaving defined the lighting and choice of optical equipment, the vision system isbased on the concept: acquisition, digitalisation, then analysis of an image.

b Lighting and choice of optical equipmentThe lighting is a deciding factor regarding the success of a vision system application.

The lighting system and optical equipment must be set-up according to the resultsrequired.

b Acquisition of the imageThe capturing of the view is performed by a camera with an analogue video typeoutput signal.

b Digitalisation of the imageThe acquired image is digitalised. It is broken down into 256 shades of grey with aresolution higher than 250,000 pixels (512 x 480).

b Analysis of the imageThe image is analysed according to the monitoring parameters (checkers): line, binary window, grey-scale window, binary edge, grey-scale edge, feature extraction, matching and character recognition.

These monitoring parameters are associated with position, rotation and exposureadjustment functions.Analysis of the image enables verification of:

    - dimension,- position,- presence/absence,- imprint, etc.

The analysis results are output (display, logic outputs, etc.).

Communication with PLCsThe vision controllers incorporate:

    - 2 serial ports for communication with a PLC and/or a PC,- 25 inputs/outputs (comprising 11 inputs and 14 outputs).

The vision controllers are compatible with PLCs. They communicate using Modbus

    General Vision system 0OsiviewLighting systems

Lighting is an essential part of the vision system. It is defined according to the environment, space, type of application, type ofmonitoring to be performed and speed of the object to be detected.

The lighting system must be selected in order to obtain the best enhancement of theobject that the user wishes to monitor in the application.Examples of lighting systems:

    b Shower system

The shower system comprises a series of radially mounted LEDs. It is a verypowerful lighting system which enables illumination of the object along its axis, fromabove. The shower system is recommended for monitoring precision, markings, etc.

    b Back light system

The lighting is placed behind the object and facing the camera. The diffused l ightingprovides a clear silhouette of the object (shadow puppet). The back light system is recommended for measuring the sides of an object oranalysing opaque elements encapsulated in glass.

    b Bar system

The bar system is used for highlighting a small surface area of the object to be

detected and casting a shadow. The bar system is recommended for location of specific flaws, monitoring of screwthreads, etc. Each object must be strictly positioned in the same manner.

    b Low angle system (oblique)

The low angle system enables edge detection, monitoring a marking and detectingflaws on glass or metal surfaces. The low angle system is recommended for monitoring printed characters, surfacecondition, detecting grooves, scratches, etc.

    b Coaxial system

By directing the light towards a semi-reflective mirror, the coaxial system enableshighlighting of smooth surfaces perpendicular to the optical axis. The coaxial system is recommended for monitoring, analysing and measuring flatmetal and other reflective surfaces.

    The main image monitoring functions are:b Line,b Binary window,b Grey-scale window,b Binary edge,b Grey-scale edge,b Feature extraction,b Smart matching,b OCR/OCV,b Monitoring of printed circuit pins.

Depending on the application, these monitoring parameters can be combined withthe following functions:v automatic trigger,v position and rotation adjustment.

b LineThis monitoring parameter necessitates binarisation of the image. The Line monitoring parameter enables:v plotting direct, diagonal or curved shape lines of measurement,v counting the number of black and white pixels. This function is suitable for the following applications:

    - presence/absence of objects,- counting,- measurement of distance,- detection of burrs,- missing parts.

b Binary windowThis monitoring parameter necessitates binarisation of the image. The shape of the binary windows can be rectangular, circular or polygonal. This monitoring parameter is used for testing a surface or taking measurements of asurface of a given colour and checking the presence/absence of an object.

b Grey-scale windowThis monitoring parameter is based on the calculation of the mean grey-scale level,

surface analysis and monitoring of intensity. The shape of the grey-scale windows can be rectangular, circular or polygonal andcan be used as a mask. The grey-scale function is used for verifying the presence/absence of an object.

b Binary edgeThis monitoring parameter necessitates binarisation of the image. The defined shapecan be a rectangle or a line. The binary edge monitoring parameter enables detection of:

    - the edge of an object and provides the coordinates of the edge detected,- the presence/absence of the object,- the positioning of the object,- and taking measurements.

A horizontal or vertical direction of inspection can be selected.

    b Grey-scale edge

This monitoring parameter utilises the different levels of grey in order to detect

edges. It enables high precision (< pixel) detection of the coordinates of an edge. The shape can be a rectangle or a line.A horizontal or vertical direction of inspection can be selected.

This monitoring parameter is used in the following applications:v measurement,v presence/absence,v positioning.

    b Feature extraction

This monitoring parameter necessitates binarisation of the image. The purpose of the feature extraction is to count the number of objects present withina defined area and to detect their properties (surface area, centre of gravity, perimeter). This function is particularly suited for the detection of objects for which their position, orientation and numbers are unknown. The shape of the feature extraction can be rectangular or circular and can be usedas a mask. The feature extraction monitoring parameter is specifically for the counting andsorting of objects.

    b Smart matching

Smart matching saves a reference image (template) and detects, within a definedsurface area, similar images.Vision controllers XUV M210 and XUV M230 have a smart matching function withteaching (intelligent model). This function also enables detection of:- the differences (XUV M210),- the number and position of objects (XUV M230).

b Character recognition, OCR/OCV (only applicable to controller XUV M230)

The vision controller XUV M230 incorporates a teaching module capable ofmemorising all or part of an alphabet (a to z; A to Z; 0 to 9; #+-/*; etc.).Many instances of a character can be memorised in order to take into account thelinked variations:

    - different positioning of the characters,- variations in the printing system.

v OCR (Optical Character Recognition)This function is used for reading a marking bearing changing information (serial n,lot n, product n, use-by date, etc.).v OCV (Optical Character Verification)This function enables verification of markings bearing consistent information (brand, product name, etc.).

b Monitoring pins of an integrated circuit Lead (only applicable to controllerXUV M230)This function is specifically for the monitoring and measurement of integrated circuitlead. It can also be used for similar applications, for example: microchip support tracks ona card with a microchip.

    b Automatic trigger

This function restricts the vision controller to performing monitoring only when theobject enters the inspection zone. The position and rotation adjustment function can be displayed to verify and correctthe position of the object.

    b Position and rotation adjustment

This function enables the vision controller to monitor the object in the event ofvariations in position. The vision controller is able, f rom a reference point, to calculate the new coordinatesand test the object.Vision controller XUV M110 has a position adjustment function, vision controller XUV

M210 has a position and rotation adjustment function.

b Saving of data and parametersData and parameters can be saved in the vision controller. Any parameter not savedis erased when the vision controller is switched off.Data saving can also be initiated via the ser ial interface from a PC or PLC.

The function enables the storage of rejected images and identification of the failedmonitoring parameter.

b Setting-up helpIt is important to carry out the camera and lighting settings before any inspection. The help parameters simplify the setting-up of the vision controller by setting the lightand level of binarisation.

The inspection results can be displayed on the screen and/or sent to a PLC, PC orparallel output.b DisplayThe positive or negative result is displayed in the monitoring parameter screen.

b ConversionThe conversion function is used for substituting the number of pixels counted by theactual dimensions of the object. Conversion is performed with the aid of the edgedetection function which enables calculation of the number of pixels between thegraduations.Various data can be defined for the vertical and horizontal direct ions.

b Judgement outputJudgement results provided by the monitoring parameters and numerical calculationprogrammes, can be transferred to other peripherals (PC, PLC, etc.).

b SpreadsheetsDuring the course of image processing, the total number of inspections, errors and

    judgements are saved and displayed.

b Monitoring dataThe monitoring data function displays a list of the numerical calculation results and

judgement outputs. 20 items (2 pages with 10 items on each) can be saved.

b List of monitoring parameters (checkers):This function displays a list of the monitoring parameters status. It enables overallviewing of the monitoring performed with their number and result.
