URGENCY OF TRANSPORTSimilar to an Emergency Department, Ornge must prioritize transports according to urgency. We use a variety of tools to help us understand the patient’s needs.

• A process is used to assign degrees of urgency based on medical condition.• Urgency requests may change and this may affect your transport plans.• Ornge Physicians assign the proper priority and the right medical crew and equipment for you.• The Ornge dispatch centre will povide updates to your care provider.

GETTING BACKReturning home depends on many factors. Please keep in mind:

• You may be discharged from the hospital you’ve been transferred to and will be expected to arrange your own transportation home. • You will need to bring clothes with you for your trip home.• Plan to purchase an airline ticket, bus ticket or arrange for pick up. You may need to pay for your own transport.• Occasionally, patients are transported to their community hospital if they require further treatment that can be provided in that facility. This will be discussed with you as you recover. • The role of Ornge is to get you to the hospital that can provide the care you need as quickly as possible. Once you have recovered you no longer need our specialized services and equipment.

WHAT TO BRINGTo keep you comfortable and prepared, you should consider the following:

• One small piece of personal carry-on luggage is all we can accommodate. The final decision as to whether or not your bag is permitted on board is made by the commanding Pilot.• Take only what you would need for the next 24 to 48 hours. Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. You may also want to bring some snack.• Bring money/credit cards for unexpected expenses.• Bring photo identification/passport.

PILOT RESTRICTIONSOrnge sometimes needs land ambulance services to transport patients to and from the hospital to the airport, helipad, or other location. The dispatch centre will make arrangements; however, land ambulances may also be affected by emergency calls in their area, which may cause some delays. Ornge will provide updates to your care provider regarding your transport.

BRINGING A FAMILY MEMBERWe know that family involvement is an important part of your care. To help decide if it is possible for your family to accompany you, Ornge considers the following:

• Your medical condition.• Cabin space and weight considerations (weight of equipment, passengers, medical escorts and aircraft fuel affect these decisions).

Please note, when the patient is a child, every effort is made to have a family member accompany them. In general the ultimate decision in regards to family is made by the Paramedics and Pilots.

A Patient Advocate is available to answer any healthcare concerns you have about Ornge.
