God’s Plan

Jeremiah 29:11

“I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans for your welfare

and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”

In 2005 God had a plan for Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church and for the Reverend Dr. Michael Foley. That plan was for us to join hands and hearts to-gether and begin our ministry serving Jesus Christ in this community. Will Akers was the chair of the Pastor Nominating Committee that called me to come and serve as your pastor. One day Will took me for a ride in his boat on the Halifax River and we talked about the plan that God had for this congregation. Since that day on the river talking and praying, so much has happened.

God’s plan involved building on the firm foundation that the Reverend Ernie Haddad had laid during his 28 years as Pastor of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church. There were many days I would go down the street and talk with Ernie and Miriam about some concern I had and they would listen and give me their wise counsel and would then say – Pastor whatever you decide we will support.

From the beginning we were guided by a vision for the time in which we were living. That vision was to make disciples – followers of Jesus who were growing up in Christ and being shaped by His love. The five panels that hang in our sanctuary became our blueprint of what a disciple making church looks like.

Over the years we have welcomed over 300 new members into the fellowship of the church who shared their life with us and grew with us in faith -- and we have said goodbye to dear friends who touched our life with their love for Christ and His church.

We have experienced the moving of God’s Holy Spirit in times of worship as we raised our voices in songs of praise, listened to God’s word proclaimed, celebrated Baptism and gathered at the table to break bread and share the cup of salvation. Worship has been the forming center of our life.

We have gathered for bible study and prayer and we have experienced the word of God coming alive and speaking to our hearts about God’s purpose and plan for His Church.

We have reached out into the community with Music Camps and Vacation Bible School’s, Food Drives, Block Parties, Trunk or Treat celebrations and Tuned for Praise Concerts.

Under the leadership of an exceptional music staff – Norris Williams as our Director of Music and Arts, Barbara Larson as our Associate Director of Music and Jamie Hawes who served for several years as our Glory Bells Director – we developed a music ministry that draws many new people to our congregation for worship – draws new members to our choir and draws children, youth and families to our Ormond Beach Youth Ringers and our Children’s choir. Ormond Beach Presbyteri-an Church is known for its excellent blend of worship and music that praises God and speaks to the hearts of those who gather.

We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church by building a Habitat for Humanity House. Ernie and Miriam spent an evening showing slides of the early years and reminding us of our core principles – Mission, Christ Centered Worship and Chris-tian Education classes for all ages.

We completed much needed renovations to our campus. The Christian Education classrooms were renovated and updated with AV equipment. The Sanctuary received major renovations – ex-panding the Chancel, New Risers for the Choir, AV equipment for video presentations, New carpet, Reupholstered Pews. The exterior of the campus was painted.

We celebrated the 60th Anniversary with a Community Food Drive and a forward-looking vision of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church being a church that is growing disciples who are learning to Soar on wings like Eagles.

We have weathered the storms of COVID-19 and we are learning many new things about God and the ways God works on the most challenging days.

Now, God has a new plan for Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church and Reverend Dr. Michael Foley. On September 30, 2020 I will, because of medical necessity, retire from active ministry as your Senior Pastor. While this decision has been a difficult decision for me to retire as your Senior pastor; it is one made with much prayer and tears as I remember the many people who have touched my life with their love and will always be in my heart. I have been blessed to be able to serve you alongside an incredible church staff. I am grateful for the love we shared for one anoth-er and for serving you and I know they will offer their best skills as you move forward into the future that God has in store for you. God brought us together for this season to grow together in faith, to rejoice in times of great joy, to help carry one another’s burdens and serve one another in love. Now God is calling me to step away from the day to day life I have shared with you as your pastor.

As I have prayed about this decision, I have the assurance that God has a plan for Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church – a plan for your welfare and not for harm – to give you a future with hope. We let go of one another so that God can begin to do new things in your life as a congregation. Radford Rader will become your Bridge Pastor on September 14, 2020 and will begin leading the session and congregation toward the plan that God has for you. His biography is included in this newsletter so that you can begin to get to know him and welcome him. Radford was the Pastor of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church from 1990 – 1996.

Saying Goodbye is the difficult part of love and of life. We resist it because there is pain and sad-ness in letting go of another and of relationships we have cherished. We resist it because we do not like change - and we want things to stay the same. In the midst of the change and the pain and times of prayer we hear the whisper of God’s voice assuring us – I have a plan for you for your welfare and not for harm – to give you a future with hope.

Reaching toward the plan that God has for Janet and I and for you involves seeking God in prayer and listening as God speaks to our hearts. Reaching toward the plan that God has for us involves paying attention to the new things that are happening all around us in a Post-COVID-19 world and discerning the vision of what ministry should look like in a changed world. Reaching toward the plan that God has for you will emerge as you continue to do the things that have formed and shaped you as a congregation – gather for worship, bible study, fellowship and service. Reaching toward the plan that God has for us involves “loving one another as Christ has loved us.”

Biographical Sketch of Radford Rader, Bridge Pastor

I was born on June 28, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri. the second of four children and the only son. I was baptized and confirmed in the Northeast Presbyterian Church where my grandparents were charter members. Our family did join a Disciples of Christ new church development when I was in 8th grade and I made a commitment to full-time Christian service one summer at their church camp. I was active in area youth leadership, became an Eagle Scout, played some foot-ball, and performed in school plays, while working weekends.

Rebecca Ann Evans came into my life at a Christmas Party in 1963. We started dating the day after she attended the Beatles Concert in Kansas City on September 16, 1964. We married in her Presby-terian Church on March 30, 1968. Eventually, Rebecca became a nursing graduate of the University of Tulsa and worked as a Registered Nurse thereafter. We have two daughters: Sara Amberg (Doug) and children, Jackson and Cecilia. They live in Eagle, Colorado; Gina Mohn (Chris) and daughters, Abby Flassig and Hannah Mohn, who live in Ormond.

I attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in English Language and Litera-tures in 1969. From there, Rebecca and I moved on to Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary where I received awards each year. At graduation with a Master of Divinity in 1972 the school awarded me the Fielding Lewis Walker graduate fellowship. In 1980, I earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary (Presbyterian in Chicago).

I was ordained in 1972 and became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Blackwell, Oklahoma (246 members). We added a good number of young couples which was good for a small shrinking town. I was president of the Quarterback Club, chaired a city task force and was elected to the school board. Three- and one-half years later, we moved to Tulsa when the Kirk of the Hills (1100- 1650 members) asked me to be their assistant pastor. Major responsibilities were in worship, preaching, youth, mission, and evangelism. Over the years, the church called me as an associate pastor and then , I became the acting head of staff. When a new pastor arrived, we accepted a call to be pastor and head of staff of Woodland Presbyterian Church in New Orleans where we grew in numbers, founded The House of Ruth a dispersed housing program for homeless families, remod-eled the fellowship hall, built a sanctuary and had great boiled crawfish dinners (615-750 members). In 1989, Ormond Beach Presbyterian called me to succeed the Reverend Ernie Haddad. We contin-ued the Haddads’ mission emphases, financed and built OBPC’s first Habitat for Humanity house.

We remodeled and enlarged the sanctuary and converted what was a Christian education building into the present multi-use facility. After my heart attack, we downsized our lives in housing and church responsibilities returning to Tulsa and the small but dynamic College Hill Presbyterian (146 members). In 2006, I began doing interims and completed four before retiring in 2012: Head of Staff at Port Orange Presbyterian (2006-2008); Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian, DeLand (2008-20090; Head of Staff at Central Presbyterian Church, Denver, Colorado (2009-2010); Head of Staff of First Presbyterian, DeLand (2010-2012) . I have been serving as Parish Associate at Westminster by the Sea Presbyterian in Daytona Beach Shores since March of 2019.

I still love hiking in the mountains, snow skiing and National Parks. I work at in flower beds and play at golf.

I will always carry in my heart rich memories of the 15 years we shared together in ministry and the many ways God showed up on those days we prayed together and He showered us with love and power when we needed HIM most. Janet and I are grateful for your many expressions of love that remind us that we are in your prayers and that God is leading us and leading you according to His perfect plan – to give us a future with hope.

Thank You Laurel Gaddy! Laurel has decided to retire from her “part time” job as coordina-tor of our mission project at Family Renew.

The Outreach Committee and OBPC want to thank Laurel for her years of exceptional lead-ership and enthusiasm in support of the families living at Family Renew. She has been col-lecting, storing in her home and distributing all the many household items needed to turn the Family Renew apartments into welcoming homes. With the help of other church volunteers she brought in furniture, linens, decorations and kitchen supplies to transform bare spaces into attractive, clean living quarters for families who have no place to call home. All the household items that OBPC members donated were given to Family Renew.

Thanks again to Laurel Gaddy for a job well done. The Outreach Committee

EVANGELISM IDEAS DURING A PANDEMIC…Did you know that people tend to be more open

to Christ during times of trouble and transition? Our current coronavirus crisis fits both these

categories! Here are a few simple ideas to advance the Gospel:

--Reach out to a lost friend

--Take a walk and meet neighbors. Ask them if they have prayer requests or needs. Invite them

to watch our online service.

--Use technology to make social connections

--Host a virtual watch party for our online worship service

--Invite friends for a virtual small group Bible study

--Record your testimony and casually share it on Facebook

--Pray daily for “open doors”

I would like to acknowledge and say “thank you” to Virginia Norred who has served as

OBPC Property Chair for 3 years. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her on many church

projects, and we all can appreciate her vision and gift of landscaping and painting the church

inside and out. Her passion is landscaping keeping things looking good, such as pulling weeds,

planting flowers, trimming trees and making sure the sprinkler system is in good shape.

Thank you Virginia for a great job well done! Virginia’s new responsibility will be serving as

the Property Committee Elder with congratulations to Warren “Randy” Pechin as the new Chair

of building and grounds. Please welcome Randy and keep him posted on any building and/or

grounds activities and/or concerns. Nick Tedesco, OBPC Sexton
