JAMES’ DRIVING TEST
SUCCESS
On behalf of us all at Ormerod, we would like to congratulate
James Roskell who passed his Driving Test on the 13th July!
We would like to share with our readers some inspirational
words (and driving tips) that James has written for us …
I started learning to drive on 10th February 2015 until I passed
my driving test on the 13th July 2017. It may have taken me a
long time, but you need to have patience when learning to
drive.
My driving instructor was Stephen Wild from Blackpool Driving
School. I had 125 driving lessons and zero hours of private
practice. The driving lessons were fully enjoyable.
Advice I would give out is:
Even if nothing is behind you keep checking the mirrors.
Patience.
Aspects I learnt with my Driving Instructor were:
Reverse park in a bay.
Reverse park at side of the road.
Reverse around a corner.
Turn in the road.
Advice for these is to be SLOW!!!!!!
JAMES’ DRIVING TEST
SUCCESS
A full driving licence is
something you have to work
hard to achieve.
I am very happy I worked hard
to achieve one of life's goals.
The theory test was the
hardest part of learning to
drive.
Ormerod offers opportunities
for all to succeed!

He told us it was a bargain!

JAMES’ DRIVING TEST
SUCCESS
Passing your Driving Test is
a huge achievement. The
more superstitious of us
might have even quivered
when informed your
driving test was going to
take place on the 13th!
Everyone is extremely
proud of James for
achieving another of his life
goals and becoming even
more independent.
We wish James many years
of happy, safe and confident
driving and enjoying the
adventures that this takes
him on.
James has recently driven to
Wales and back . Here is a photo

PERFORMING ARTS
Exciting news from Miss Lucy and her students from the
various performing arts groups that she mentors.
In preparation for our next production, Miss Lucy has
exclusively told us that auditions for the new characters and
roles are about to start. This is very exciting, as our last show -
Pantomania, was really, really good. We’ve tried to take a
sneaky peek at the new script, but Miss Lucy is keeping it all
very hush hush for now. Hopefully (if she’s not looking) we’ll be
able to bring you some inside information next time!
Also, the
Ormerod
Choir - Bright
Souls, have
recorded
some of their
songs and
Miss Lucy has
put them
onto a CD.
The CD also
contains extra
songs from our drama groups, including songs from our last 2
shows. If anybody would like to purchase one of these CD’s
then they can do so by contacting Miss Lucy in person or by
email at: [email protected]. The cost of the CD is £1.50 and all
proceeds will go to funding further performing arts projects.

PERFORMING ARTS
Bright Souls and Fleetwood choirs have also helped provide the
voices on the newly released Brian House Children's Hospice
charity record which is called Golden Days. Bright Souls choir
also feature in the accompanying video. The video for Golden
Days was recently featured on BBC North West News, so the
members of Bright Souls are now entitled to call themselves
T.V. celebrities!
Golden Days features 14 choirs from schools and community
groups from the North West and has been written and
composed by Simon Cox from Lytham.
Miss Lucy has
posted the video
of Golden Days
on the Ormerod
Facebook page
so all of our
subscribers are
able to watch it.
All proceeds from the sales of the
single, which is available to purchase
on Google Play, Amazon Music, iTunes
and Spotify will go to Brian House
Children's Hospice.

PEMBERTON’S FARM SHOP
Some people who live in the area will have heard of, or even
visited, Pemberton’s Dairy in Lytham. For a long time
Pemberton’s have been delivering milk, eggs and other fresh
produce in and around Lytham and St Annes. People have also
been able to call in to the dairy on Ballam Road in Lytham and
buy their own fresh milk , cream and eggs.
Recently, Pemberton’s have opened a brand new Farm Shop
and they now sell a much bigger range of produce including
their own raw milk, cream, eggs, meat, vegetables as well as
other locally sourced produce.
Mrs Pemberton
was looking for
local suppliers to
stock the Farm
Shop with
chutneys, pickles
and other
preserves. Spice
Up Your Life were
delighted when
she approached us
to ask if we would
be able to supply
her family’s new Farm Shop with our range. This was a huge
opportunity to grow our own enterprise and be able to sell our
products to a lot more customers.
Pemberton’s Farm Shop
PEMBERTON’S FARM SHOP
Our range is proving to be very popular with the customers of
Pemberton’s Farm Shop because Mrs Pemberton has already
been back twice since the Farm Shop opened to get more stock.
This has kept Spice Up Your Life really busy, but we don’t mind,
it’s a wonderful opportunity that many larger business owners
would be envious of. We are very fortunate that local
businesses are able to support each other in this way.
Mrs
Pemberton
chose to
stock our
range of
chutneys and
preserves
because they
are made
locally and
are made
from locally
sourced
ingredients.
Some of the ingredients are grown in our own garden at
Headquarters, and you can’t get much more local than that! We
don’t use any artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives
either, so this fits in perfectly with the fresh and natural theme
that a traditional farm shop like Pemberton’s offers.

PEMBERTON’S FARM SHOP
We recently took a trip to
Pemberton’s Farm Shop and
we loved it! Everybody
there was really happy and
friendly and we were able to
go outside and meet some of
the farm animals too. We
did a bit of shopping and
were also delighted to find
that the Farm Shop sells
Walling’s Ice Cream! We couldn’t resist, and suffice to say, we
can highly recommend the Eton Mess flavour (maybe we’ll try
the Irish Cream flavour next time).
We would definitely recommend you visit, we’re hoping to be
able to feed some of the animals and watch the sheep being
sheared next time we go.
Don’t forget, you can purchase Spice Up Your Life produce from
Headquarters, St Annes Farmers’ Market and Pemberton’s
Farm Shop. Our kitchen is rated 5 - Very Good by Fylde
Borough Council, and we’re unashamedly very proud!
We’re busy making more stock

St Annes in Bloom is a community group that represents
various organisations from the local area, all working together
to improve the town. Groups such as Ormerod, the Chamber of
Trade, St Annes Rotary Club, Fylde Borough Council and St
Annes Town Council are all involved in the project.
Some of the projects that St Annes in Bloom help to organise
and manage are maintaining the community allotments on
Blundell Road, participation in the annual North West in Bloom
competition and installing and maintaining new and existing
planters and displays around the town.
The people involved
with St Annes in Bloom
are all volunteers who
work hard to help
make St Annes look the
best it can.
They also support
other community
groups by offering
advice and help. St
Annes won Gold in the
2016 North West in
Bloom competition. The North West in Bloom Judges visited St
Annes (including our garden at Ormerod Headquarters) at the
end of July, this year’s winners will be announced some time in
October.

ST ANNES IN BLOOM
ST ANNES IN BLOOM
St Annes in Bloom have recently helped to give the Peace and
Happiness Garden, next to the statue of Les Dawson near the
pier, a bit of a makeover.
Philip Chatterton has helped nurture the plants that were used
in the makeover, and in particular, the succulents which are
featured in the vertically framed living art exhibits on the walls
of the garden. Philip works at Ashton Gardens two days a week
and assists his colleagues from Fylde Borough Council’s Parks
and Gardens department by growing ( I think the correct term
is propagating!) a lot of the flowers and plants that you see in
the planters, parks and open spaces around the town.
Philip was
recently
invited to

THE PRINCE’S TRUST
The Prince’s Trust run a 12 week personal development
program to help groups of young people develop skills, gain
confidence and work towards employment and training
through organised programs of community service running in
conjunction with Blackpool Fire and Rescue.
They kindly invited us to a day of fun and games at Blackpool
Fire Station last year which everybody really enjoyed. This year
our friends from the Prince’s Trust invited us to play Crazy Golf
with them at the Mini Links course on the Promenade in St
Annes. The Rambling Group, along with Trish, had a lovely
morning and we hope to plan more future events and establish
strong links with the trust in the future.

HEALTHWATCH
We had some very interesting guests visit us at the service user
forum, they were from an organisation called Healthwatch.
They are interested in how people with disabilities are seen in
the eyes of professionals, how they are approached, and how
they are supported when accessing health services.
It was great to see people listening to any concerns and issues
that people we support have, or have encountered in the past.
Our guests took any issues that arose seriously and some
interesting topics were discussed.
The Ormerod has participated in a questionnaire so as to
gather as much information on this subject as possible for
Healthwatch. The information will be fed back to professional
bodies within the heath service.
As well as attending the service user forum, Healthwatch have
also held pop-up workshops in some of our daily sessions
which were very successful.
We look forward to what outcomes are achieved from this
valuable and welcome research.
People can still share their views and any issues they may have
by filling in a questionnaire via the Healthwatch website.
Have your say on services for people with learning disabilities
and/or autism.

CHLOE’S CHARITY
TEA PARTY
Chloe Riding organised and hosted a Charity Tea Party that was
held at Headquarters on Monday 14th August. The Tea Party
was to raise money for Brian House Children’s Hospice. Brian
House is a specialist unit within Trinity Hospice that specialises
in palliative care for children. It is a fully equipped children’s
hospice and caters entirely for children who live on the Fylde
Coast. Brian House is one of only a handful of local children’s
hospices in the
U.K. and it
currently
supports over
80 families.
Chloe chose to
raise funds for
Brian House
because her
niece Daisie
stayed there
before she
passed away. It
is very close to
Chloe’s heart.

Chloe’s fundraising from when it began at 10.30am right up
until 1.00pm.
Linda Spencer
and Gill
Satterthwaite
helped Chloe
by making lots
of lovely cakes
for her to sell
and Chloe’s
Mum and Dad
also donated
some cakes.
Bernard Greenroyd donated a delicious carrot cake. Bernard’s
efforts were later rewarded because he won the prize in the
Name The Teddy competition. Simone Sterry made sure
everybody was invited.
Trinity Hospice kindly sent their mascot, Hospuss, along to
enjoy the day too.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
All hands were on deck to set up for the annual garden party,
this year with the theme of a teddy bears’ picnic. With great
planning & hard work, stalls were set up around the garden at
Headquarters. There was lovely, tasty special edition
marmalade for sale exclusively made for the Teddy Bears’
Picnic by our Spice Up Your Life enterprise. The jars featured a
Paddington Bear label and a quote by Michael Bond, the author
of the Paddington Bear books.
Arty Crafty had a selection of their beautiful hand designed
products for sale and also being sold were some vegetables that
had been grown in our own garden by the two Gardening
Groups. Our very own Teddy Bears Hospital was staffed by
members of our Sewing Group, who used their magic and
medical expertise to look after any bears that needed a bit of
TLC. The Sewing Group also sold some lovely items they had
made throughout the year.
TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
For all the committed teddy bear lovers, we had an Adopt a
Bear stall that proved to be very popular. The stall made sure
that any poor, lonely, unloved and unwanted bears found loving
new homes where they would be looked after forever. These
were just a few of the stalls
we had around the garden.
By 12.30pm the sun was
shining and people started to
arrive, bringing their smiles
and their picnics with them
ready to enjoy themselves on
the picnic rugs or under the
shaded gazebo seated area. It
was lovely to see so many
people. Lots of service users
assisted staff throughout the
day selling raffle tickets,
selling cakes, manning stalls
and making our guests
welcome.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
There was lots of wonderful entertainment going on too, Grant
was the compere and D.J. for the afternoon playing lots of our
favourite music. The Children's Musical Theatre did a
performance of Goldilocks and the Three Bears along with a
singing and dancing routine to If You Go Down To The Woods
Today.
Other performances took place during the afternoon, we got to
see the Flash Mob dance routine being performed again
and the Yoga Group did a brilliant demonstration of some of the
exercises and disciplines that they have learnt.
The Children’s Musical Theatre
TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
We were also joined by one of our friends from St Annes
Library, who read us some delightful teddy bear themed stories
in the garden. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service let us have a
fire engine from their St Annes
Fire Station for part of the
afternoon and people were able
to climb onboard and have a
good look around it if they
wanted to. This seemed to be a
very popular attraction with the
ladies, for some reason.
Thank you to everybody that came
and supported us - Gilbert
