Original Sonnet
Against All Odds
What could I say that hasn't been said already
Continue feeling like a broken record
My love for you keeps growing steady
Staring out the window watching the bird
As he chirps a long and playful song
A song that brings viewers from far and near
This is how I've felt for you, my love, all along
Been loving you from afar, even though you're here
Others say that there is plenty more out there
That I'm a fool for choosing you so quick
That I was blinded by your false glare
That we never truly had that great click
All those statements are just their jealousy
I'll prove them wrong you just wait and see.
Sonnet 108 Analysis
Throughout sonnet 108 the speaker declares his unwavering love through reflection on his
past attempts to win over his love: using repetition and time, the speaker repeats what he was
saying before. William Shakespeare uses descriptive diction that describes time and appearance
in order to represent his everlasting love. There are several references to time and how it
represents his love: "nor gives to necessary wrinkles place" is a prime example. The quote shows
the speaker saying how he feels about his love's appearance, they may be aging, but he doesn't
see it. The speaker's love for that person is eternal in his eyes. Throughout the sonnet the speaker
also reflects on his past attempts to impress them. He eventually decides that he's done it all and
that there is no longer something he hasn't done, so decides to see it all as new once again. While
doing so, he also renews his love for this person. For example, "as when first I hallowed thy fair
name," which means when he first started feeling his love for that person. Another example
would be the final two lines. These lines fully summarize what the speaker was struggling to
show throughout the whole sonnet. "Finding the first conceit of love there bred where time and
outward form would show it dead." These final lines show the purity of the speaker's love. He
found and sees who he first fell in love with even though it looks as though there is no reason to
keep loving them. This is the main theme of the sonnet: against all odds and against time's
effects, his love is constantly renewed and will be the same as it was in the very beginning.
