    INTRODUCTION (065/BCT/503)

    Deerwalk Services Pvt. Ltd is a premier healthcare software solutions company based in

    Lexington, Massachusetts. The Company is located at Tamreshwore Mahadevsthan,

    Jayabageshwori, Kathmandu, Nepal. Deerwalk Service Pvt Ltd was founded by Rudra

    Pandey in 2009.

    Deerwalk Services Pvt. Ltd offers proprietary solutions as well as customized programming

    and data transformation services to the healthcare industry. Deerwalk's executive

    management team has over 100 years of diversified healthcare management experience with

    over 50 years in healthcare IT. The company has two revolutionary products, Everest, a case

    management workflow solution, and Makalu, an analytical platform. These products fully

    integrate claims, Electronics Medical Records (EMR), and other clinical information.

    Through the wholly owned subsidiary based in Kathmandu, Nepal, this company brings the

    benefit of offshore cost advantage to their clients.

    This company also maintains a state-of-the-art development center in Nepal. This allows

    company to leverage the excellent technical resources in the country and benefitting from the

    cost advantages without sacrificing on quality. This company is a true 24- hour software

    company. Deerwalk Services Pvt Ltd is off-shore Company rather than out-source as there

    are the obvious initial cost savings and the end result may cost the company more. The

    companys off-shore team is part of the same company fabric as their on-shore team. Their

    development team members have been chosen from the best universities with the same rigor

    that they show for their US-based team. They also provide a pleasing work environment for

    their employees and produce the world's leading software innovations.

    The Company has also developed strong relationships and active internship programs with

    the best universities in Nepal. Their senior technical staff members have designed and

    instructed curriculums for a number of computer science classes taught at the Institute of

    Engineering, which is the premier technology institution of Nepal. Their strong university

    relationships give them the best and earliest recruiting opportunities for the best engineers

    entering the job market.

    ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE (065/BCT/535)

    Deerwalk Services is a subsidy of Deerwalk Inc. which is dedicated in providing qualitative

    services to its clients. In order to provide services, the organization must be properlymanaged and structured so that all the activities can be carried out much more efficiently and

    effectively. Deerwalk Services is an offshore company which started just around two years

    ago but it is growing rapidly and it currently employee around 120 employees. Deerwalk is a

    company founded by a team of entrepreneurs who have founded, managed, and sold small

    businesses. This company follows hierarchical organizational structure whose layout is

    simply given below:

    The President of the company is responsible for making all the strategy and business

    development activities. All the decision making powers are in the hand of the president of the

    company. Below the president, the boards of directors are engaged who are responsible for

    implementing all the strategies that are imposed by the president. All the management

    activities are coordinated and controlled by the senior manager. Since Deerwalk is a very big

    offshore company so only senior manager cant handle all the management activities so in

    order to assist senior manager, engineering manager and project managers are employed.

    Below these managers, senior developers work who are basically developers who have more

    experience in software development process. All the software developers are coordinated and

    under the supervision of the senior developer.

    The company divides its employees on the basis of services it provides. It mainly provides

    three types of services: Product Development Services, IT services and Data Conversion

    Services. Deerwalk provides the cost benefits of a global services team while providing its

    clients with a domestic management and customer service team. Customer satisfaction is the

    major focus of this company so to ensure that their product meets the requirements and

    specification of the customer they continuously communicate with their clients. The

    stakeholders are continuously informed about the development of the project as a result the

    company is so far successful in satisfying its clients.

    One of the major features of this company is the rotation policy. The employee might get

    bored of working in the same field for a long time and might want to shift to the new project.

    In such case, they can be shifted to the new group depending upon their skills. Not only that,

    but the company had also the policy of training their employees to new fields if they are

    interested in it. After certain time of training if they seem fine in their new field they are

    shifted to the new project team.

    Although Deerwalk Services is a subsidy of Deerwalk Inc. of USA, all the activities carried

    out here are controlled locally. The company also has employee exchange policy according to

    which the employee working here gets an opportunity to work in head office in USA and vice

    versa.

    The company has the policy of carrying out employee evaluation approximately around every

    three months. Depending upon the performance of the employee, if they seem to be valuable

    asset to the company they are given salary raise and other incentives. One interesting

    incentive is giving a stock option to the employee beside salary raise. The company is

    applying every possible action that can motivate the employees and give their best to the

    company. The company also carries out recreational and gaming activities every week in

    order to refresh the employees.

    PROJECT MANAGEMENT (065/BCT/540)

    Unlike other software company that follows or employs Capability Maturity Model

    Integration (CMMI) approach to improve their performance, Deer Walk Services Pvt. Ltd.

    has employed Agile Software Development technique to manage their project properly. Agile

    software development is a group of software development methodologies based on iterative

    and incremental development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration

    between self-organizing, cross-functional teams. It is a conceptual framework that promotes

    foreseen interactions throughout the development cycle.

    Agile software development technique has different types of methodologies and Deer Walk

    Services uses Scrum methodology for project management. Rather than a full process or

    methodology, it is a framework. So instead of providing complete, detailed descriptions of

    how everything is to be done on the project, much is left up to the software development

    team. This is done because the team will know best how to solve the problem they are

    presented. Although if we seek history, initially Scrum methodology was suggested for

    controlling manufacturing, but later its use has been shifted on the management of other

    projects, and it can be used to run manufacturing maintenance groups that does not require

    any creativity or intelligence.

    Scrum contains sets of methods and predefined roles. The main roles in Scrum are:

    The "ScrumMaster", who ensures the process is followed and removes impediments i.e.

    Deerwalk Inc., Lexington, US.

    The "Product Owner", who represents the stakeholders and the business i.e. clients.

    The "Development Team", a group who does the coding, implementation, testing, etc. i.e.

    MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (065/BCT/519)

    At the present, organizations realize that information is important as a property. It can add

    value to organizations. As well as, it helps organizations to survive among intensivecompetition. Therefore, organizations need information for management. Particularly,

    information must be a system to implementation for adding value of organizations. Each

    organization must manage information by systematically collecting. Then, there will be

    sending, receiving and analyzing information.

    Due to a lot of information in organizations, organizations use information technologies (IT)

    to manage information. Information technologies are applying science that is used for

    managing information. They are both hardware and software such as computers, cables,

    magnetic tapes, CDs, monitors, operating systems, application software, signal and so on.

    Information technologies, particularly computer-base, systemize information in

    organizations. Therefore, users can quickly and easily adopt information. Information

    technologies can process data to be required information and sending/receiving information.

    Management information systems (MIS) are applying computer-base for managing

    information in an organization for management roles such as interpersonal roles,

    informational roles and decisional roles. MIS compound of theories of computer science and

    management science. These theories build system and program utilization. Normally, MIS

    are integrated systems of users and machines (computers) with aiming to provide

    organizations information for operation, management and decision-making. These systems

    use computer hardware and software. Furthermore, MIS are used to collect and cumulate data

    from several sources both internal and external organization for processing and arranging

    information. Therefore, executives or users can apply it for making decision and other

    management.

    MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM IN DEERWALK (065/BCT/519)

    Deerwalk Services being an offshore company, it has a close relation with Deerwalk Inc.

    Deerwalk Inc. fetches client in USA and pitches them to different offshore company. So it is

    very important for the Deerwalk Services to maintain a very good relation with the Deerwalk

    Inc. Besides this Deerwalk Inc. keeps tracks of all the work being performed by the Deerwalk

    Services and also collects the feedback from the clients. Besides this Deerwalk Inc. also

    keeps the accounting records of the Deerwalk services. All the information about progress of

    projects are recorded in Deerwalk services and sends it to Deerwalk Inc. on daily basis.

    TECHNOLOGY (065/BCT/519)

    Deerwalk uses recent technologies for providing services and products. The programming

    languages used are dot net(C#),grels(java based)etc. recently Deerwalk is doing some

    research work on distributing computing using hadoop for cost effective cloud computing.

    Deerwalk has been adapting itself with emerging technologies. There are high technology

    equipments, computers in the office. It has high quality internet facility also.

    ACTIVITIES (065/BCT/506)

    Deerwalk is fully a business organization. They have almost non-hierarchical organizational

    structure. There is just a logical hierarchy of management committee. The Executive

    Committee, a central group comprising the Managing Director, Deputy Managing Director,

    Head of Risk Management, Head of Corporate Affairs and heads of Macquarie's major

    operating groups, manage the organisation as a whole.

    Individual businesses operate within Deerwalk operating groups. These businesses work

    closely together, specializing in customer needs, and are committed to their client's

    relationship with the Deerwalk.

    Within overall guidelines and a strong risk management framework, the operating groups

    have substantial discretion in the way they manage their business activities. Great emphasis is

    placed on a client's relationship with Deerwalk as a whole.

    Deerwalk is not a strict company. The working days are 5 days per week and working hour is

    from 9:00 AM to 5:00PM. But there are some employees who come late to the office and

    work till late night. The company does not make hard and fast rules regarding to office time.

    Instead there is an assignment defined for each developer per day and one should complete

    the given assignment within the day. A developer can take a leave for a whole day in working

    days but s/he must have done sufficient job last time. The working performance of individual

    developer is evaluated via continuous integration application. Beside the regular

    programming job company manages weekly hiking program to each alternate project groups.

    Exercises, indoor games, frequent fun activities, celebrations and outings have been

    conducted frequently.

    STAFFING/REQUIREMENT PROCEDURE (065/BCT/501)

    Deerwalk Services, Nepal at present has 100+ staffs working for the organization. It does

    have the aim of expanding the organization so that it can provide jobs to 1000 staffs. The

    organization takes students like us as internee and selects the best among them. Besides this

    the organization has established an institute named Deerwalk Institute of Technology

    where it provides Engineering education and aims to provide the best students of the batch

    with job at the institute itself. The students thus chosen are taken in as trainee for the 3

    months period. They are closely watched by the senior staffs in this training period and they

    are evaluated. If the organization feels that they are suitable for the task they are taken in as

    full fletched staff.

    But most of the staffs are hired through vacancy announcement. The organization issues

    vacancy announcement in the media and the desired are asked to submit their CVs. Then

    there is different level of interview and among them the most qualified candidates are chosen.

    The organization then sends these employees for the HIPPA law training by which the

    organization is bound. After completion of the training the employees are made to sign a

    contract of confidentiality of works of the organization and that they will follow the HIPPA

    law. Besides this, if the organization feels like the staffs requires some other sorts of trainings

    then the organization holds the training program.

    There is also the implementation of employee review system. The organization reviews the

    work accomplished by the employee in the past three months. If the organization feels that

    the staff can make more progress the organization encourages the staff to do more and shows

    them the way. And if the organization feels that the employee has done very well in these

    past three months then the organization increases the salary of the employee or may even

    promote the employee to the higher posts.

    FINANCE (065/BCT/501)

    The staffs are paid their wages by the onshore company Deerwalk Inc. located at Lexington,

    Massachusetts, United States which is also its headquarters. The Deerwalk Inc. deals with the

    clients and comes in terms with the agreement with the client. Then the task is given to

    offshore organizations like Deerwalk Services, Nepal who develop the system as per the

    clients requirements. Then after the job is finished the client pays to the Deerwalk Inc. as per

    their agreement. And at the end of the month the Deerwalk Inc. sends the salary to the

    employees of the offshore companies. The employees have the option of taking direct money

    or there is an option known as stock option where the employees are provided with the US

    based stock equivalent to their salary.

    Overall, it can be said that the Deerwalk Services itself does not possess the finances to

    provide the salary or for any sort of activities within the organization. The Deerwalk Services

    is completely dependent on the Deerwalk Inc. for operating.

    MOTIVATION (065/BCT/532)

    To make the employee work well with the project they must be completely satisfied and

    motivated with their job or project. Motivation techniques may be different like handsome

    salary, good environment etc. In case of Deerwalk there is silent and cool environment which

    motivate the employee to work with cool mind. They dont have any sort of disturbance or

    interrupt. Every department has their own working space and so do every working team has.

    If anyone has any problem then they can get help from anyone there. There are more than 100

    employees working at Deerwalk so it is more helpful too. They provide the canteen facility

    for the employees with cheap rates and it becomes cheaper during the late night time times.In some cases if some employee should have to work for late hours then company provides a

    van for those employees which drop them to their home. One of the most interesting

    strategies of Deerwalk is Rotation in Working principle. They rotate their employees from

    one department to another department which causes to feel them fresh for that work, so that

    they dont feel bored to continue their work in that field. It also organizes trainings from time

    to time which refresh the employees. It also rewards their good working employees with

    increased salary and promotion. As we know Deerwalk is Out Shore Company so they

    provide the interfacing bridge between those foreign and the local programmers by calling

    the foreign programmers here in Nepal and letting them to give training to their employees or

    provide the chances to the employee to visit the foreigner office and get some broad

    knowledge also. It provides short breaks so the employees get fresh by playing some short

    games or by just relaxing during those time period.

    These factors easily motivate the employees to work at Deerwalk. But there are some facts

    which may discourse the employees too. Such as the tight working schedule. They dont

    allow any employee to leave the office premises unless they finish their job. But it provides

    another facility in case of illness that they will consider some vacations. They offer 3 days

    extra vacation per year.

    They are confident on their motivation techniques, so they plan to increase number of

    employees in company to 1000 employees within 2 years.

    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

    Deerwalk Services is one of the largest software development company in Nepal. This

    organization was established in Nepal in August 2009 with the aim of developing systems of

    the insurance data analysis, data scrubbing and data organizing. Its clients are mostly located

    in the northern part of United States of America. Though the company has been running for

    just 2 and half years its reputation has already been spread throughout Nepal. It is a growing

    develop the team work within the members of the company. Also, the working hour of the

    employee is flexible and works for 9 hours a day from Monday to Friday. This flexibility in

    the time boosts the employee to work with less pressure and can give their effort more

    efficiently. Also, the working environment is friendly as the employees can swap or move

    from one projects to another as per the work load of the project so that the project schedule is

    maintained and helps to complete it on time.

    The company is mostly working for the clients in US. Very few projects have been done for

    the local community. So, the company should also think to work for the development of the

    system to the local community health IT.

    Hence, company is striving towards excellence with the aim of expanding to higher number

    of employees and providing quality service to their clients.

    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION (LEKH NATH KHANAL -

    065/BCT/506)

    After the visit to Deerwalk Services, we got all the organizational information regarding to

    the Deerwalk Company. All the members of the company was so helpful that we didnt feel

    bore for even a single second. We learnt how an organization is conducted to reach their goal.

    The company develops software to the US clients. They develop software that has high

    demand in health sector in the US. They have satisfied clients because of their quality

    product.

    All the members of Deerwalk Company are satisfied from the companys management.

    Indoor-outdoor gaming, frequent celebration, regularly hiking have created a very much

    friendly environment among the company staffs. One interesting fact that we came to know is

    their loose but tight enough rules and regulations. An employee can attain the office late in

    the morning and can leave the office early in the evening. But it is also a nice fact that they

    dont let employee to stay not working. They can give leave as their previous working

    history. One having previous good working hours can be flexibly takes leaves.

    Good news is that they are increasing the employee addition rate from next session. More IT

    developers will be joining to Deerwalk willing to learn more from them which eventually

    refines the product quality.

    Although the company is working nice under present conditions, some changes are required

    to bust up their quality products. They should develop software for the nation too. They

    should have made a daily attendance of the developers; this makes them more punctual on

    their work. They should make their rules and regulations little strict.

    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION (NARENDRA MAHARJAN -

    065/BCT/519)

    After visit to the Deerwalk and having talk to Er. Milan Lamichhane, we became familiar

    with the internal structure of the organization, how the company operates and all the internal

    management activities carried out in the company. we found out that, Deerwalk is an offshore

    company working for the US based company Deerwalk Inc. Deerwalk services in Nepal is

    mostly dependent to Deerwalk Inc. and it gets all its projects from US.

    Deerwalk functions in two fields, services and products lines. Initially this company has been

    started for functioning in services line. But later on it also started working on product line.

    Regarding to services, Deerwalk use to get project on data manipulating. Raw data of medical

    insurance are provided by Deerwalk Inc. from client of US then these data are manipulated in

    Deerwalk services in Nepal. Scrubbing, cleaning, organizing of data are done in Deerwalk.

    All these projects are done under HIPPA law according to company policy. Regarding to

    products, Deerwalk recently doing research on distributed computing using hadoop. Also,

    Deerwalk had developed some commercial softwares using programming languages like

    .NET, grels etc.

    This company seems to be very successful, which has employee of 115 members and has its

    target to achieve 1000 members. The employees also seem very much satisfied and happy

    with the management of the company.

    Deerwalk is not currently employing the standard protocols like CMMI-Capability Maturity

    Model Integration for betterment of the services it provides. It is just starting to work on such

    standardization issues especially on Agile methodology.

    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION (RAMESH KARN - 065/BCT/532)

    The company was started 2 years ago by Rudra Pandey who was the cofounder of

    D2Hawkeye (now introduced as Verisk International). Deerwalk is highly growing company

    and they target to increase company employee number to 1000 within 2 years. They develop

    the software for USAs health insurance companies. They also did few projects for domestic

    health organizations and also have some undergoing projects.

    Deerwalk does only the projects specific to foreign health insurance companies. In Nepal

    there are multiple companies like NEPSE, NTC etc. who get their software from other

    companies situated in India, USA. If the local software company like Deer Walk Services

    make software for such companies then this will be beneficial for the vendor company as

    they can get real time solution service when they have any problem related to that software.

    Local companies are more reliable than the foreign companies. Besides this, Deerwalk canalso extend their working in various ways to fulfill their goal of making 1000 Employees

    Company.

    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION (ROJESH SHRESTHA -

    After visiting the company, we became familiar with the internal structure of the

    organization, how the company operates and all the internal management activities carried

    out in the company. Initially before visiting the company we thought this company was an

    outsourcing software company but after the interview we learned that this company is

    actually an offshore company, not an outsourcing company.
