  • Over the past few decades, Indonesia has made great strides in improving access to education. Indonesian children are starting school earlier and staying in school longer than they ever have before and investment is a key priority for the government. With the introduction of the e-catalogue system for procurement in 2013, the Indonesian government hopes to develop a world-class education system by 2025.

A FLOURISHING EDUCATION LANDSCAPE - INDONESIA

Indonesia’s 2020 state budget indicates spending towards education will be up by a 30% increase from 2015.

There is $36 billion of government budget allocated to the education sector

Indonesia has 2.6 million teachers, 50 million students and 250,000 schools

Student enrolment has also grown from 53,000 in 2013 to 61,000 in 2018

Indonesia is the leading destination for international schools in Southeast Asia with 198 schools

Indonesia is currently the world’s 16th largest economy. It’s projected to be the 4th largest economy in the world by 2050

ASEAN countries had a combined GCP of US$2.8 trillion in 2017, almost 70 million households in ASEAN countries can be considered as consumers with the ability to access private education

The Philippines spent US$13.2 billion on education in 2018, an annual increase of 27.2%, in a growing effort to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in school curriculums

Malaysia invests heavily in education with a budget that amounted to US$14.6 billion in 2017. This is in line with a government target for 40% of the population to have a tertiary education by 2020. The aim is that there will be a 60% to 40% ratio in future between those graduating in science subjects and the arts

Singapore, the region’s leading hub for higher education, consistently ranks education as one of its top spending priorities, accounting for around 12.8% of Government expenditure in 2018. It has also committed to spending almost US$1 billion annually up to 2020

Vietnam tops all other ASEAN countries on public expenditure on education – 7.2% of GDP and has attracted US$4 billion of investment in education projects involving foreign companies. The Government approved 530 joint training programmes involving Vietnamese and foreign universities of which, 80 of these were with UK schools

Thailand’s government has endowed a sizeable portion of their national budget (US$16 billion) to boost education from primary to tertiary levels of studies

Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand are expected to be among the world’s top 25 economies by the half-century mark. A significant amount of this monetary growth is expected to be directed towards private education. In September 2019 Ministers from ASEAN Member States met to discuss strategies for accelerating human capital development in the region through integrated policy investments and innovative policy reforms. One of the key areas of investment identified was education.
