“God does not choose to create with a snap of the finger. For some reason, God takes time...This biblical vision is important in sustaining our patience in the pursuit of

peace and reconciliation. We know that the gift of reconciliation takes time to unfold. But the creation story helps us to see that time itself is God’s gift to the world. In other words, we must give ourselves and others time and space to become new

people. The work of God’s reconciliation is not just about the momentous occasions of bringing Palestinians and Israelis to the negotiating table. It includes taking time

to cultivate the habits of ordinary peaceful existence — habits like listening, welcome strangers, planting gardens, raising children and keeping house."

-- Emmanuel Kotongole and Chris Rice in Reconciling All Things

Welcome

Welcome to Pillar Church this morning. We’re glad that you’re here. If you've been worshipping here for a long time or you're entering the doors of a church for the first time today it is our hope that you'll experience a kind welcome, a sense of genuine community and the grace and truth of Jesus Christ that the Christian Church has celebrated for centuries.

Note on Communion We celebrate Communion via intinction, that is, we dip the bread in the cup before partaking in the sacrament. During the 9:00 service there are three stations up front (with one gluten-free & vegan-friendly station by the timpani available at both services) During the 10:30 service, there are five stations in the front and one in the lobby. A communion server will be available to serve you if you are in need of assistance.

Liturgical Notes We are in the season of Ordinary Time. In this context, ordinary comes from the latin ordinalis, which means ordered or numbered. In this time of the Christian year, we look for and seek out God’s direction to order and number our days.

General Announcements

Refugee Care-Pillar is hoping to sponsor a new refugee family this autumn. Please pray that refugee families are granted access to the US as well as for all the families who remain in refugee camps around the world. We are currently compiling teams to care for this new family. Please sign up on a refugee care team in the lobby or contact Kat Schulte for more information at [email protected].

Service Times- God has been gracious to Pillar in this season of numerical growth. Over the last several months there has been a process of discernment on how best to create spaces of welcome and hospitality as we grow in a limited seating sanctuary. One option was to add an additional service. A decision has been made to postpone that decision, primarily due to the likelihood of building construction beginning late winter 2018. The potential challenges that could pose to our life together it seemed wise to hold off on service time changes or additions. The challenge remains for us to create space of welcome and hospitality to guests, visitors, college students and current Pillarites. To that end if you are willing and able as fall approaches and college students return to worship during the 9 am service that would be a wonderful act of service. Thank you for considering the possibility.

Open Position: Pillar is seeking to hire an Executive Pastor. In partnership with the Lead Pastor the Executive Pastor will empower the congregation to pursue its vision and mission by providing leadership to the operational life of the church and its ministries. This is a full time salaried position. If you are interested please email: [email protected], or visit our website at Pillarchurch.com.

Cards in the Back: There are information cards in the back on two tables about our ministries and events going on within them: Children, Adult, Women’s, Student & College. Please feel free to grab the one that pertains to you or your family. Thanks!

Deacons’ Announcements

Pillar's Baptismal Vow Fund supports families who seek to raise their children in the truth of God's word by sending their children to Christian school and Christian camps, grades K-12, and also comes alongside individuals who are students at Western Theological Seminary and Calvin Theological Seminary with financial assistance. Please contact [email protected] to learn more.

September Offerings: are designated to Kids’ Food Basket, whose mission is attacking childhood hunger to help young people learn and live well. The special offering will be taken on September 17, but you can give then or at any time this month by writing on your gift “Kids’ Food Basket.” Also at any time this month, feel free to donate items to Kids’ Food Basket from the following list: fruit or applesauce cups/pouches, granola bars, cracker packs, snack size zipper bags, toasted oat cereal, cheese crackers, and pretzel twists, or participate in an activity for the whole family and decorate brown lunch bags that will be used for the lunches! Please bring items to the labeled baskets in the back lobby of church. Learn more at kidsfoodbasket.org.

Emergency Relief Offering: in partnership with RCA Global Mission and World Renew Disaster Response Services, we will be taking an offering TODAY to help Texans who need both immediate assistance and help rebuilding as a result of Hurricane Harvey devastation in Houston. Please designate your check to "Harvey Relief."

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Through Christ, our Lord.

Doxology

Offering

Testimony

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Meditation for Those Not Communing If you are not coming forward to receive Communion, please feel free to use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers.

Prayers for Those Searching for Truth “Lord Jesus, you claimed to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I search for spiritual truth, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the life that you promise. Amen.”

Prayer of Belief “Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Trusting in God’s love and in your death and resurrection on my behalf, I ask you to forgive me, most merciful Lord, and fill me with your Holy Spirit. Relying on your grace, I promise to confess you publicly before others, to serve you daily and to walk in your way. Amen.”

Prayer of Commitment “Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.”

Communion Prayers

Sanctus

Most righteous God we remember in this meal… Together we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

So, send your Holy Spirit upon us, we pray… Even so, come Lord Jesus!
