Centering Moment Kathleen McTigueWe come together this morning to remind one

another to rest for a moment on the forming edge of our lives,

To resist the headlong tumble into the next moment, until we claim for ourselves awareness and gratitude,

Taking the time to look into one another’s faces and see there communion: the refl ection of our own eyes.

This house of laughter and silence, memory and hope, is hallowed by our presence together.

Please be seated.Share in the Chair

A reading from the Wisdom of Martin Luther

“To preach Christ is to feed the soul…”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Wisdom of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We need to pledge ourselves anew to the cause of Christ. We must capture the spirit of the early church. Wherever the early Christians went, they made a triumphant witness for Christ. Whether on the village streets or in the city jails, they daringly proclaimed the good news of the gospel.”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able.

Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life;let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;

Words of life and beauty teach me faith and duty.Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

A reading from the Gospel according to John1.32-34 (NIV)

“John gave this testimony: ‘I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on [Jesus]. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me – The [one] on whom you see the spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit – I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.’”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Words of Remembrance Celebrant: We remember that on the night of betrayal and desertion, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and shared it with everyone present, saying…“Do this in memory of me.” In the same way, Jesus also took a cup, and off ered it to everyone present, saying, “This cup is the new covenant of all-inclusive love. Do this in memory of me.”

SunBurst NewsSunBurst NewsAnnual Meeting: Today Following 2nd Service

W e e n c o u r a g e E V E R Y m e m b e r to attend our annual meeting (always the 3rd Sunday in January). This is the meeting where we review the achievements and challenges of the previous year and cast the vision for the new year. This is an excellent way to stay informed about the health and direction of the church. We usually keep well under an hour, so you still have time for a tasty brunch afterward. We hope to see you for our annual congregational meeting!

Renew Your CommitmentWe are starting 2017

h igh ly mo t i va ted to reach more people with the power of hope, the celebration of the sacred value of all people, the assurance of God’s all-inclusive and unconditional love, and with the affi rmation that the gospel calls us to work for justice for all. We want to build community, strengthen connections, inspire devotion, give people resources for spiritual growth, minister to physical needs, and in all things glorify the omnipresent Spirit of Love.

To do all that we hope to do, we need every member and faithful friend of Sunshine Cathedral to renew their commitment of supporting the ministries of Sunshine Cathedral with time, talent, and treasure.

You will be asked to make a generous pledge of support this year, and we hope that you will joyfully make that pledge and faithfully honor it so that we can be God’s love in action in a hurting world. Thank you for your commitment.

A Course in Miracles: Thursdays at 6:30 pm“[A] miracle is defi ned as the shift in perception from

fear to love” (acim.org). A Course in Miracles is facilitated at Sunshine Cathedral weekly by Rev. Margarita Rodriguez and Rev. Nancy Davis. All are welcome.

RIP Reverend Mike Nikolaus(information provided by Sunshine Cathedral and former Christ MCC lay leader, Rudy Molinet)

Rev. Mike Nikolaus served as the long-term pastor of Christ MCC in Miami. Mike passed away last summer.

Christ MCC was the church that initially sponsored Church of the Holy Spirit (now known as Sunshine Cathedral) as an outreach to the Fort Lauderdale community. Rev. Mike was very involved in building bridges with other churches in Miami especially at the height of the AIDS crisis. He was very ecumenical and was very much in line with the thinking of today’s Sunshine Cathedral. After CMCC, he went on to lead other churches around the country on an interim basis including Church of our Savior MCC which was then located in a storefront in Boca Raton.

A Special Invitation from Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins and the Sunshine Cathedral

Every year, at the Sunshine Cathedral we touch thousands of people with the message of God’s all-inclusive and unconditional love. We witness powerful transformations in so many ways. As a “diff erent kind of church where the past is past and the future is fi lled with infi nite possibilities” we now look to a new year fi lled with promise and alive with hope.

Yes, these are turbulent times in a troubled world. Yet, we can be a beacon of light and love.

As we look to the future, our mission is to share the blessings we have received in ways that can transform lives and transform the world. To fulfi ll this exciting vision we are praying, planning, and preparing to improve and expand our ministries.

We would like to hear from you as we review our present ministries and plan for the future. I would like to invite you to participate in our online Congregational Life Survey.

Your participation in this survey will provide important feedback to improve the qualities of our ministries and congregational life in the Sunshine Cathedral. Your responses are anonymous and confi dential. Completion of this survey usually takes less than 15 minutes plus the time required for you to write your comments should you wish to do so. This online survey will be open for your responses from January 9 until noon on January 31.

The link to our online survey has been included in an eblast and can be found on the church website (SunshineCathedral.org).

Your views and voice are vital as we continue to think and pray about what God can inspire us to become and do in the years ahead!

Sunday, January 15th, 2017 6 Sunshine Cathedral - 2017 A Year of Evangelism

For anyone without access to a computer or the internet, a paper copy of the survey is available or a computer and internet connection can be provided at the Sunshine Cathedral. Contact Rev. Dr. Robert Griffin for more information.

A Progressive, Community ChurchSunshine Cathedral is affi liated with both the International

Council of Community Churches (ICCC, or “ITripleC”) and Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC).

The ICCC (ITripleC) is an association of autonomous congregations and independent movements. The ITripleC includes progressive, evangelical, and liturgical parishes and is a member of the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches and is historically committed to racial diversity and social justice. The ICCC was formed in 1950 as the result of a merger of two organizations in the community church movement.

MCC was founded in 1968 by Troy D. Perry, a minister from the Pentecostal tradition who felt called to start a church that would welcome and affi rm the LGBT children of God.

Sunshine Cathedral has no formal creed but as Christians, Jesus is our primary faith symbol/example and we seek to understand the message and mission of Jesus by careful and open-minded study of the scriptures. Our worshiping community is open to those who do as well as those who do not primarily identify as Christian, and still, our roots are in the progressive Christian movements; and, the message and ritual of our church are inspired by the progressive Christian witness. Newcomers Reception at California Pizza Kitchen

Are you new to the Sunshine Cathedral community? Do you have questions about our church? Would you like to meet some of the pastors and other Sunshine Cathedral leaders? If so, please plan on joining us for a Newcomers Reception at 7 pm on Wednesday, February 15 at California Pizza Kitchen located at 2301 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. After the reception, many of us will stay for dinner at CPK to support Sunshine Cathedral and Pizza with a Purpose Day. If you would like more information, please contact Rev Anne ([email protected] or 954-462-2004 x 208).

BRICKS & MORTAR MINISTRY~ Pillars Society A message by Dr. Keith D. Muller, Sunshine Cathedral Foundation Chair

Our celebration of Burning the Mortgage was made possible by support from our congregation but also and to a signifi cant extent by members of our Pillars Society who upon their death remembered the church and foundation in

their wills and life estates, including life insurance policies. We will always remember them.

Now that our mortgage debt is paid off , we must remain vigilant for future needs. Our campus and buildings are not new. We can anticipate needs arising in the areas of plumbing, roofs, electrical, parking lot, technology, and other areas. In addition, as you know our church leaders have their eyes on future growth needs so that we can expand our outreach to more people, such as the recently announced new seating project.

Equally important is the need to recognize the heavy use of our campus and buildings by multiple community groups and organizations. This level of use will take a toll on our property. We need to maintain our landscaping and buildings (painting and more) and to do this requires funds. Our volunteer groups – such as the landscape team – would benefi t from additional support.

The Sunshine Cathedral Foundation requests that each of us refl ect on our church and how we can help. Please consider completing the necessary paperwork to become a Pillar and let us know if you have remembered the church or foundation in your wills, IRAs, insurance policies or simply in your life estates. Our senior minister and staff remind us often that no gift is too small.

For answers to any questions about becoming a member of our Pillars Society please talk with me or any member of the Board of Governors. Or email me [email protected].

~ New Seating for Sunshine CathedralMake a pledge toward the Chair Campaign (CCIV) so

that Sunshine Cathedral can have new, beautiful seats and fl ooring. For every $553.00 given (g iven a t once, o r pledges fulfilled), the donor will have a name placed on one chair. Donors are making it possible for the church to have new seats, they are not purchasing their own place to sit nor will donors decide which seats will bear their names (it simply wouldn’t be possible to accommodate those desires). What we are doing is making it possible to have beautiful, new, comfortable seats and those who give the amount of a chair will have a name placed on a chair, somewhere. Arrangements can be made to pay in full - $553.00 or $25.14 a week, or $110.60 monthly from January - May, 2017. Pledges must be paid in full by May 2017. Those with outstanding pledges for CCIII will have their pledges rolled over to this new campaign unless other instructions are given. If you have an outstanding pledge, just keep paying on it and you will be supporting the new eff ort!
