Calhoun County high School senior CorySmith is taking advantage of everyopportunity he can to achieve the career

he wants. in January, he started a tool and dieyouth apprenticeship at husqvarna.“i’m loving it,” he said of the apprenticeship. “it’shands-on. They got me in the shop right off thebat. i’ve been working 4-1/2 to 5 hours a day.”Cory, a machine tool technology student, is inhis fourth semester at oCtech. When he startscoming to the college full-time in the fall, he willfinish the associate degree program in twosemesters.“husqvarna is going to pay for me to finish mydegree at oCtech,” he said. “They’re even talkingabout sending me to college later to get mybachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.”As a youth apprentice, Cory has to log 2,000 hoursin husqvarna’s tool and die shop. once he has metthat milestone, Cory will become a full-timeemployee for the lawn mower manufacturer and

transition into a regular apprenticeship.in addition to his apprenticeship, Cory also workspart-time in the gun shop at Sandy run outdoorsand hardware, which is how he got interested inmetal fabrication.“When i was younger, i thought i wanted to be anarchitect,” he said. “The more i looked at it, themore i realized i want to do something that’s morehands-on, where i’m seeing results right away andi’m not inside all of the time. When i got thechance to try machine tool technology at thebeginning of this school year, i was like, ‘Sign meup.’”“i would definitely recommend oCtech, if fornothing else than to explore your options and findout what you want to do with your life,” Cory said.“my instructors have been great. They answer anyquestions you have, and – with us having to leavecampus early to go back to the high school – theyare willing to work with you on when projects aredue. it’s been a great experience.”

“I have always wanted to work with children. In high school, Iparticipated in the Teacher Cadet program and took Early ChildhoodEducation courses at Cope Area Career Center. I love being at OCtech. The campus is beautiful, and Mr. Xennie Weeks – my ECE advisorand instructor – is great. I’ve learned a lot from him and feel like he’sin my corner. The Presidential Scholars program provides manyopportunities, and the private lounge is a great place to relax andstudy between classes. I would encourage anyone entering OCtech tolook into the program and jump at the chance to be a part of it. There are so many resources on campus to help students. I have thesupport I need to be successful here.”

When Annika Gupta started the university of South Carolina honors Collegein the fall, the 17-year-old already had 44 college credits under her belt – 18of which she earned through oCtech’s Early College.

“Those Early College courses helped me become the student i am today,” she said.“Getting a head start in college-level classes definitely gave me an advantage over comingto college straight out of high school. Without oCtech’s Early College courses, i wouldnot be on my current track to complete a double major in biochemistry and molecularbiology with a minor in Spanish and study abroad – all within three years.”Annika took all of her Early College courses online, which she said worked perfectly withher high school schedule. Seeing how successful her brother, Avigeet, was in earningcollege credits before graduating from high school only made her choice that muchclearer. “i knew if he could do it, i could do it,” she said. “my instructors were so helpful. i couldalways email them and because i was an Early College student, they were very willing towork with me.”“you don’t realize how much you’re missing out on academically until you take theseclasses,” Annika said. “you don’t know how much potential you have until you do it. it’s agreat opportunity to get ahead and become better prepared for college.”

clinics related to my exercise sciencemajor, but because I took the courses

online, I didn’t have to worry about theminterfering with my other obligations. This summer, I’m taking a chemistry

maci ott came to oCtech in fall2014 as one of the college’s firstpresidential Scholars. Because she

took several of her prerequisite courses forthe Associate Degree nursing program as astudent at orangeburg preparatory Schools, maci entered the college with a semester’sworth of coursework under her belt.“i finished my general education coursesearly for nursing, so i started taking coursestoward a bachelor’s degree,” she said. “All ofthose extra classes allowed me to keep myLife Scholarship at oCtech and get a headstart on my four-year degree.”in June, maci started working as a registerednurse on the regional medical Center’srehabilitation floor.“i love my job,” she said. “oCtech’s ADnprogram prepared me well. As soon as we got

into the program, we were going to thehospital. By my second semester, i had morehands-on clinical experience than moststudents who are about to graduate from afour-year nursing program.”Small class sizes made for a great learningenvironment, maci said. “We knew all of our instructors, and theyknew all of us. it was like another family,” shesaid. “if you weren’t where you weresupposed to be, somebody was going to textor call you to ask what’s going on and whyyou weren’t there.”“The instructors were very helpful and madesure you did what you were supposed to do,”maci said. “Even before i got into the nursingprogram, i could ask questions and theywould help me. They were tough, but theywere very nurturing.”

Harold WilliamsBranchville High School Class of 2017 | Presidential Scholar | Mechatronics

“OCtech’s Mechatronics program is such a hands-on experience. I’ve alwaysbeen interested in robotics. I enjoy watching shows like ‘Robot CombatLeague’ – where competitors operate robots in a fight and repair them aftereach round – and now I understand what they’re talking about. My dreamjob would be working as a robot programmer and designer at DisneyWorld. As a Presidential Scholar, I have access to a quiet study space oncampus. I often relax and do work in there when I don’t have class. We alsoget help planning our courses and setting up our schedules, and supplies areavailable for us to borrow for class. All of my instructors are helpful andgood at what they do. I’m learning what I need to reach my goals.”
