Guidelines

Page 2: Oral presentation E3

What?

• Candidates are each asked to talk for

1½ minutes in response to a scenario described by the interlocutor. They are given 1 minute to think about what they want to say and they can make notes if they want to. After each talk, the listening candidate is expected to ask three questions about what their partner has said.

Page 3: Oral presentation E3

Why?Speak to Communicate

• You need to show that you can communicate information, experience, feelings and opinions on familiar topics. For example education, housing, health

• You need to speak clearly. • You need to show different examples of grammar

tenses, (examples: past simple, present simple, present perfect)

• You need to use different adjectives (not just nice and friendly) & maybe comparative/superlative adjectives

• You need to ask relevant questions about what you have heard from your partner. (don’t ask your partner to repeat the same information, ask something that gives more details e.g. If your partner said ‘I come from Italy’ DO NOT ask ‘where do you come from? BUT ask ‘Is Italy a nice country?’

Presentation• You need a short introduction:

I am going to talk about my reading and the things I read in English and why I read them.

• To make your presentation last for 1 ½ minutes you need to give a lot of examples but DO NOT repeat the same type of information again and again.

• Try to use linking words or sequencers – Firstly, then, finally

A presentation example – This is just an example. You can add/change this as you wish

I am going to talk about my reading and the things I read in English and why I read them. I read many things in my own language but I also read things in English. I don’t have much free time but I read things such as newspapers, magazines, web pages and books.

I like to read newspapers once or twice a week and especially at the weekend when I have more time because I like to find out about what is happening in the UK and around the world. In addition, I sometimes buy cookery magazines as I enjoy cooking and like to try new recipes. I particularly like to read about food and recipes from different countries.

I also use the internet a lot and read many different types of web pages, some tell me about what is happening in my local area and there are others which can give me information about what my child is studying so that I can help my daughter with her homework.

Lastly, I like reading fiction. I particularly enjoy reading historical dramas and go to the library regularly to choose books to read. I find it very relaxing to read but at the same time I feel that I am learning about the history of a place. I have just finished reading a story called Labyrinth by Kate Mosse which is about a particular historical time in France and I learnt a lot about French history.

Finally, I feel that all reading is beneficial and that we learn from everything we read. We may read to find out information about recipes, news or schoolwork. However, even if we read stories because we enjoy it and we want to relax we are still learning by increasing our vocabulary and finding out new things that are part of the story.

Practice

• Now, use a clock to time yourself. You have 1 minute to prepare (look again at the advice)

• Present to someone else or practise on your own. Again, time yourself. If you have the possibility to record yourself, try that as well.
