Reporting Process - As of September 2010, all assessment, evaluation and reporting in Ontario schools are now based on the policies and practices described in Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting In Ontario Schools. (Grades 1 to 12) In elementary schools, the academic year is now divided into two terms with three formal reporting periods; a progress report in November, a report card in February at the end of term 1 and a 2 nd report card in June at the end of term 2. On all of the report cards, teachers share students’ information regarding their learning and achievement of the learning skills and work habits and the Ontario curriculum expectations. The purpose of the two provincial report cards is to communicate how well your child has achieved the overall curriculum expectations for each subject. Teachers will assign a letter grade for Grades 1-6 and a percentage mark for Grades 7-8, as well as evaluate learning skills and work habits. Happy New Year!! Lets hope 2018 will be as awesome as 2017!!!

Reporting Process - As of September 2010, all assessment, evaluation and reporting in Ontario schools are now based on the policies and practices described in Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting In Ontario Schools. professional activity day. School staff will be involved in activities, which focus on student success, student achievement and the Teaching, Learn-ing Cycle. The school is open for Kindergarten Registration but there are no scheduled classes.

Bus Loop

Please remember that the parking lot on the west side of the building is a ‘kiss & go” in the mornings. We have many parents parking and leaving their cars thus not allowing our busses and taxis the ability to safely drop off our students. If you wish to park, please use the parking lot at the front of the school. This also goes for the end of the school day. Cars again are parking in the bus lane on the west side thus preventing the safe pick up for our students. The majority of our school’s population are walkers so it would help to alleviate the traffic immensely if the students were to walk to and from school or if parents could please avoid parking in the west parking area. Indoor Shoes/Outdoor Boots Now that it is either snowy or muddy outside, we would like your assis-tance in trying to keep our halls and classrooms clean. Please have your child wear boots to school and have a pair of shoes to keep at school just for indoors. If for any reason he or she does not wear boots, we ask that a second pair of shoes be worn for inside so that mud and snow are not being tracked into the classrooms and the gym.

Let it Snow With the winter season upon us, people of all ages are looking forward to the joys of snow. Most children rank snow-balling high on the list of fun winter activities. In order to promote a safe and respectful environment on our school

playground, students have been told through their classroom teacher and morning announcements that the throwing of snowballs is prohibited. Unfortunately, when we have hundreds of students tramping through a small area of snow, that snow quickly becomes icy and SAFETY becomes a major concern. We have instructed all of our students that for SAFETY REASONS SNOWBALLING IS NOT PERMITTED. Please take time with your child to review this policy. We appreciate your support in all matters relating to your child(ren)’s safety.

Our students are having fun building snow/ice sculptures and making snowmen or snow forts. Students have also had the opportu-nity to learn about pole walking at recess time. Thanks to our School Assistants for organizing this activity. Let’s hope the snow stays for the next few months!

York Region Public Health

If parents/guardians or students receive a letter from York Region Public Health requesting immunization information, here’s what to do: Update York Region Public Health on your child’s immuni-zation status in one of the following ways:

Online at https://eimmunization.york.ca

Fax documents to 905-895-6066 or 1-866-258-2026

Mail immunization information to Immunization Services, Box 147, Newmarket, ON L3Y 6Z1

Call York Region Public Health at 1-877-464-9675

ext. 73456

Arts @ Baythorn

Would your child enjoy learning the Ontario curriculum through the Arts? If so, the York Region District School Board offers an Elementary integrated Arts Program at Baythorn Public School. Students currently in grades four and five may apply for the art@baythorn program, where they will have the opportunity to explore the disci-plines of Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, and Music in a coop-erative learning environment. To learn more about the arts@baythorn program, stu-dents and their families are invited to attend an informa-tion evening at Baythorn P.S. on Thursday, January 18, 2018 @ 6:30pm and/or visit www.baythorn.ps.yrdsb.edu.on.ca or call 905-889-7992.

Latest from the Library

Silver Birch (for the Jr. students) and Red Maple (for the Intermediate students) are well underway with the books circulating in and out as fast as the blink of an eye. It is exciting to see such a high number of students so motivated to read. Blue Spruce will be starting shortly for the primary students.

Well-Being

Each month, the Well Being Committee will be posting some tips and/or resources to promote the well being of our Rogers Community. Helpful Strategy Having a hard time talking to your child about school? Try the 2 stars and a wish strategy. At some point in the evening, maybe around the dinner table, use the following prompts to get the conversation going: Ask your child to tell you 2 "stars" about their school day (what was positive) Then ask them to tell you a wish they had from their day (maybe something they wished had happened differently etc.) This is a great way to promote dialogue about your child's day and to get the conversation going with your family. Website for Parents ABC's of Mental Health: Parents often have questions about the behaviour of children and adolescents. They may wonder why certain behaviour is occurring, and how best to respond. The ABCs of Mental Health provides resources that include ideas for promoting the mental health of children and adolescents, information about how children change as they get older, descriptions of behaviours that might indicate a problem, and practical suggestions for steps to take. http://www.sickkidscmh.ca/abc/welcome

Physical Education (Jr. & Int.)

Students must dress appropriately. i.e. shorts or sweat pants, t-shirt or sweat shirt, running shoes. Ensure that shoes are completely tied/fastened, long hair is tied back and jewellery is removed. Students must participate so as to ensure their own safety and the safety of others and handle equipment with care.

No Glass Containers Please! Parents are asked not to send any glass containers or bottles in their child/ren’s lunches. There have been numerous cases where a glass container has been broken which causes a safety issue for students.

We can see clearly now, the storm has gone… On a snow day –

Buses & Lunch Programs are cancelled, but the school is open.

If buses are cancelled in the morning, they are also cancelled for the afternoon.

For safety reasons, you may choose whether or not to send your child to school; however, if you keep him/her home

and your child is NOT bussed, you MUST call the school and report the absence. Our Safe Arrival Program dictates

that we know where all absent students are – if we cannot reach you, we will contact your emergency contact person. If

we cannot reach that person, we are obligated to contact the police.

Once students arrive, they are expected to stay. Students are not allowed to come to the office and use the phone - a

few hundred kids, 3 phone lines, 2 secretaries (who are using all the phone lines to check on the absences) creates a great

deal of confusion in the office. You can, however, make arrangements ahead of time to pick up your child at lunch.

When buses are cancelled – there are:

NO Lunch Lady Lunches, Pasta Lunches or Pizza Lunches.

NO Special Events days or field trips.

Please send a lunch with your child. There may be a modified program in your child’s class due to number of students attending and absences of some teachers. Dress for the weather – bus cancellation does not mean automatic indoor recesses or early entry into the school.

Thank you for your support of our LOONIE TOONIE DRIVE

Thank you very much for sending in your donations to our Loonie Toonie drive which helped to make some families holidays very happy. In addition, any additional money was used to help other families in our community.

PEANUT AND NUT BAN Numerous students attending our school have life threatening allergies and will experience anaphylactic shock if they are exposed to even a tiny amount of peanut oil, peanuts or nut products. Therefore, Rogers PS MUST be a PEANUT AND NUT-FREE ZONE. What this means is that no peanut or peanut prod-ucts of any kind may be brought into the school. Thank you.

Inclement Weather Alerts on Websites Beginning in December, all bus cancella-tions, inclement weather and school closure information will be available on our school website: www.rogers.ps.yrdsb.ca and Board website: www.yrdsb.ca as well as www.schoolbuscity.com

Staffing for Next Year

If your child currently attends Rogers, but you anticipate moving between now and the new school year, please let us know your plans as soon as possible. Although it may seem early, we are already working on student numbers for next year so that we may plan our staffing.

French Immersion Information Night and Registration for Students Entering Grade 1 in September

An information session for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place in the Mazo de la Roche school library on January 18, 2018 at 7 p.m. FI registration for Grade 1 students starting in September will begin January 19, 2018 at the Mazo de la Roche school office. In order to streamline the registration process, parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten stu-dents entering Grade 1 in 2018, and wishing to enroll in the FI Program, can visit or call their child’s current school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the Principal of the home school. Registration for students attending the following schools will be accepted at Mazo de la Roche PS: Armitage Village PS, Bogart PS, Glen Cedar PS, J.L.R. Bell PS, Meadowbrook PS, Robert Munsch PS, Prince Charles PS, Rogers PS, Stonehaven PS, Stuart Scott PS.

Triple P Tip of the Month ~ JANUARY ~ Chores

Responsibility for chores helps children learn self-discipline, how to apply themselves to a job and how to help with the running of a household. You will find that you have more time with your child and yourself if you give your child chores. KEY STEPS: Explain why it is important for everyone to help around the house

Decide on a list of chores and who will do them Draw up a job roster Let your child know when their chores must be finished Tell your child exactly what needs to be done for the job to be satisfactory Talk about rewards and consequences Praise and reward your child for completing their chores Apply a consequence if your child does not complete their chores satisfactorily

Don’t forget to check out the new Triple P Ontario website for online resources and podcasts for parents of children from

birth to teens. www.triplepontario.ca

Parking is prohibited in our School Parking Lots for overnight. The lots need to be clear and accessible for the snowplows. Owners are at risk for being ticketed by the Town for parking illegally.

Rogers P.S. has Gone Paperless

As part of our communication strategy and in the best interest of the environment, Rogers P.S. office has gone paperless. We will no longer be sending out hard copies of most information from the office. Most communication from the office will be sent by email. The newsletter is posted on our website at the beginning of each month. Please be sure to check it out monthly for all the current happenings at Rogers P.S. at http://www.yrdsb.ca/

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM

Every morning we contact the parents of students who are absent from school and for whom we have had no

prior notification. If you know that your child is going to be absent for a medical appointment etc., please

send a note to your child’s teacher or leave a voice mail message in the attendance mailbox. This reduces

considerably the number of calls to parents that we have to make.

This Newsletter is being sent on behalf of the York Region Dis-trict School Board and/or your child’s school in compliance with the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation. If you no longer wish to receive commercial electronic messages, you may unsubscribe at any time. If you no longer wish to receive any emails from Rogers Public School, please contact the school directly to have your email deleted from your child’s Student Information Record.
