Teacher NotesBooks for Opinion Writing

I create a bulletin board with the components explicitly featured I use this board to teach and reference the components of opinion writing

Note the book covers are Amazon Affiliate links

These books are great to introduce the concept of opinion and help students analyze reasons for an opinion I use them at the beginning and throughout the unit Listed below is a

blog post with more opinion writing mentor texts

copy Jessica Boschen bull What I Have Learned

Opinion StandardsThe second grade common core standard for opinion writing is 2W1 Write opinion pieces that introduce a topic state an opinion supply reasons that support the opinion use linking words and provide a concluding statement or section

The third grade common core standard for opinion writing is 3W1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts supporting a point of view with reasons

3W1A Introduce the topic or text they are writing about state an opinion and create an organizational structure that lists reasons 3W1B Provide reasons that support the opinion 3W1C Use linking words and phrases (eg because therefore since for example) to connect opinion and reasons 3W1D Provide a concluding statement or section

While providing reasons that are supported by facts and details are not required until 4th grade I have included them in a few places within this resource

Blog Posts to Support This UnitI have written a series of blog posts to support this unit Each blog post has additional instructional strategies pictures and ideas to expand your opinion writing unit

In this cooperative learning strategy provide each student with a prompt or response Half the students will get prompts and the other half will get

responses Although the strips are different sizes I suggest printing them on different colored paper so that itrsquos easier to ldquofindrdquo a partner and easier for you

to see how students pair up

I tell students that they must pair up with someone who has a strip of a different color The student with the prompt reads hisher question The

student with the response answers the question using a response that makes sense

Students switch strips of paper and then find a new partner Switching strips of paper guarantees that all students practice both listen to and speaking the

prompts and responses

The Conversation Game is a whole-group or small group opinion-giving game in which students choose a card and tell their opinion Its purpose is to help students develop oral proficiency in stating opinions and supplying reasons before being asked to do so in writing Students can play this game at the beginning of the unit but it can also be repeated throughout the unit as

studentsrsquo skills with opinions develop further Play the game at the beginning of the unit by having students simply state opinions As they become better

at supplying reasons play the game again with that added requirement

Included are prompts sentence frames and a game board for small group use You will need a die and student markers

Sentence FramesOn the following pages are sample sentence frames for a variety of

purposes Use them as a springboard to get your students started on opinion writing However be sure to have students practice without the sentence frames so that they can practice writing without scaffolding

Students can also use the response strips from the Pair Up and Switch game as an additional cache of sentence frames

Opinion or Reason SortDiscuss with students the difference between an opinion and a reason Generally an opinion states an option you would prefer while a reason shares a fact about that option that makes it appealing to you This is very similar to a factopinion sort Irsquom interpreting the facts as reasons for the opinion Also some reasons could be interpreted as opinions in the broader sense Sort the whole-group

opinionreason cards to help model the difference between the two

The other component to this sort is that students have to match the reason with the opinion Be sure that students understand the matching component I also make sure that my students understand that they cannot glue down the card until they

are completely done with the sorting and matching

Writing PromptsFollowing are writing prompts for opinion writing Each prompt gives the

context as well as a ldquobe sure to includerdquo section that lists the components of opinion writing

On a recent assessment I realized that I hadnrsquot given students enough opportunities to reply to a prompt We had done a lot of work writing about informational texts gathering facts organizing facts writing an introductory

sentence etc but when my students saw the prompt I had a ton of questions like ldquoWhat do I dordquo Students knew what to do but didnrsquot know

how to translate the work we had been doing into application on an assessment

The writing prompts also give you good pre- mid- and post- assessment options to evaluate student writing and plan your next steps based on student work Help students identify what the prompt is asking by

highlighting key words as well as the components that need to be included in their writing

copy Jessica Boschen bull What I Have Learned

Checklist amp Samples

Use the following checklist to help students identify what they still need

to include in their opinion writing

Also included are samples of student writing Use these samples to teach the checklist Some writing samples include all the components some do

not It is also beneficial to use actual student writing from this year

previous years or other teachersrsquo students

When students analyze work samples it helps strengthen their own writing

because they will notice what is missing and what needs to be

changed

When students analyze work samples it helps strengthen their own writing

because they will notice what is missing and what needs to be

changed

When students analyze work samples it helps strengthen their own writing

because they will notice what is missing and what needs to be

changed
