OUR TECHNOLOGY

We have a good working relationship with the major classification societies and a thorough understanding of their requirements. Our involvement in relevant joint industry projects, cooperation with technical institutes and universities and in-house research and development contributes to keeping our knowledge state-of-the-art in all relevant technologies. We have a profound and in-depth knowledge of the physics behind the phenomena which occur in the interaction between mobile offshore structures and the offshore environment, creating a solid basis to perform our engineering work on the cutting edge of technical developments.

Based on our track record of having delivered design and equipment for more than 250 units of different design types for different markets GustoMSC has received unequalled feedback on the construction, operations and performance of our designs. Our experience, including Project Management, Naval Architecture, Structures, Hydrodynamics,

Systems and Equipment and can be illustrated by the following activities:

• Intact and damage stability of any floating body, partly or completely submerged using in-house developed software. GustoMSC has a vast experience in stability analysis and watertight integrity of jack-ups, semi-submersibles and vessels, following Class, MODU, SPS or HSE rules. Typical delivery is the Class approved stability booklet or manual.

• Combine the hydrodynamics mass and inertia of any floating body to find internal forces and determine loads. In-house developed software ensures quick convergence to optimal design.

• Hydrodynamical analysis, including motion analysis, drag, resistance and propulsion calculations and bollard pull estimates. Our approach is supported by many years of model-test experience. Motion analysis is the basis for operability analysis and the determination of limiting sea-states.

• Structural design and analysis, from rule scantling check to advanced structural verification, including dynamic response, strength and buckling checks and fatigue analysis. When we supply the basic design of a Mobile Offshore Unit, part of our scope typically includes basic design level drawings and verification of crane pedestals, steel helideck and helideck support structures and foundations for heavy equipment.

• Design for Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions.• Station keeping assessment; DP analysis,

mooring and DP assisted mooring analysis.• Docking plans• Safety case-related advanced analysis

such as vessel impact on jack-up legs, fire load on Mobile Offshore Units, earth quake response analysis for jack-ups and dropped object analysis.

• Based on our design track record for different applications, we have an in-depth understanding of the integration of different mission systems based on their intended operation.

• Extensive experience in the application of Class Society rules, industry guidelines and recommended practices such as those from API and ISO.

Creating designs of Mobile Offshore Units requires a multi-disciplinary approach in which skills, experience and dedicated tools are used to translate the owner’s requirements into a well-balanced solution that is readily accepted by regulatory bodies.

OUR OPERATIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES

In addition to our Customer Service department providing spare parts, inspections, maintenance and training in over 200 projects per year, GustoMSC provides engineering services ranging from day to day project support to asset upgrades and major conversions. Our team of dedicated, multi-disciplinary, experienced engineers apply their skills, expertise and tools required for our mobile offshore unit designs to ensure effective operational engineering support.

Project SupportGustoMSC provides technical support related to Mobile Offshore Units of our own design or from others focusing on our clients’ interests. Our clients are typically active in offshore construction and exploration, construction of offshore wind farms, or civil works.

Project support can be summarized in:• Site specific assessments of jack-ups using

our in-house software for jack-up design, all using the latest industry developments and insight. Criteria for site-specific assessments such as SNAME 5-5A or ISO19905 are used.

• Site specific station keeping analysis of floating units, using advanced in-house and commercial software. Analysis is provided for DP, moored or DP assisted moored units. Criteria for mooring assessment include Classification Society requirements, international guidelines and recommendations.

• Installation analysis of jack-ups from floating, touch down, semi-jacked to jacking to target height. Time domain simulation analysis is used to analyze the dynamic response of the unit due to leg to seabed impact.

• Structural verification and drafting for temporary living quarters, helideck structures, derricks and masts, topsides module integration.

• Project specific analysis from loading to transportation and installation. GustoMSC assists in defining loading conditions and analyzing stability and ballasting. Calculation of motions determines the limiting operational sea-states and accelerations of the cargo. The loading conditions and design accelerations are input for further structural analysis of the cargo sea-fastening and hull strength.

• Transportation and installation analysis. We can advise on cribbing and grillage lay-out and sea-fastening arrangement and perform the required motion and structural analysis for towing, dry transport and load transfer, for any type of unit.

• GustoMSC performs regular deadweight surveys and inclining tests in compliance with IMO requirements. We have all necessary equipment in-house, such as inclinometers, density meters and sounding tape. All measuring equipment is calibrated or proofed on a regular basis.

DEADWEIGHT SURVEYS & INCLINING TESTS

UpgradingUpgrade modifications to existing equipment can be illustrated by the following examples, but may comprise many other topics related to operations at sea:

• Modifications to crane booms, crane conversion and upgrade kits, jacking systems and other equipment to assist owners in optimizing the operations with their unit. Our multi-disciplinary approach to equipment and unit design ensures finding the optimal solution.

• Design of spudcan modifications intended to increase the jack-up capacity for a specific location. These modifications range from adding skirts to the design or add-on footings. The major part of the associated geotechnical analysis is performed in-house, but we have a close working relation with some of the major geotechnical centers of expertise.

• Fatigue utilization or life time extension studies to ensure continued operations. Fatigue analysis combined with operational history is used to establish the effective operational time against the design life. For Mobile Offshore Units that are past their fatigue design life, detailed fatigue analysis is typically required as input for Class inspection plans.

• Integration of new equipment to improve operational flexibility, for example the GustoMSC SmartCrane on a jack-up cantilever.

• Design, delivery and integration of Texas Decks on jack-ups to increase work area.

• Accommodation capacity upgrades, including lifesaving appliances.

• Crane capacity upgrades, maximum load or crane reach, including boom lengthening and fly-jib design.

• Leg extension projects, including hull and jacking system integrity.

• Stinger design. Stingers for pipeline installation are subjected to a complex combination of loads from the pipeline, hydrodynamic and inertial loads. GustoMSC has designed several stingers over the past decades.

ConversionsGustoMSC is able to assist in the conversion of existing units, modifications to units increasing their capacity or repurposing the original intention of the unit in the broadest sense, by lengthening, drill floor and cantilever upgrades, sponsons and blisters. Our services range from concept development to basic design, including Class approval and ready for construction. Examples of major conversions supported by GustoMSC are:

• Overall lengthening of a semi-submersible drilling vessel by adding columns and lengthening the pontoons.

• Conversion of a drilling jack-up to a production unit, able to support production modules, wellhead units and risers.

• Modification of a bulk carrier into a pipe laying vessel.

• Floating service vessel to accommodation vessel

• Feasibility level studies, for example the conversion of a service jack-up to a drilling unit, a moored vessel to a DP vessel, a floating drilling semi-submersible to a floating production vessel or a floating barge to jack-up.
