2 INTRODUCTION 2.1 The MRU particulate matter measurement system (FSM)

Basic principle of the MRU particulate matter measurement (FSM) is the loading of a filter with particulate matter and the weighing of this filter. The amount of particulate matter resulting from the difference in weight before and after the filter has been loaded. On site the FSM case is needed and the weighing of the filter will be done off site in the user’s office.

This separation enables a more reliable overall system, the mobile component of the FSM particulate matter collection suitcase is simple and robust. The weighing method is a reliable method to determine the particulate matter weight. Using a special scale that simultaneously dry’s and weigh’s the filter in one step, errors are excluded by moisture in the filter without having to implement a lengthy filter conditioning. The complete system FSM is designed as an accessory to the proven basic unit OPTIMA 7, enabling the complete menu guided operation of the particulate matter measurement. Both, FSM scales and FSM particulate matter collection box can only be operated via the OPTIMA 7, which manages the filters used and their weight and displays the final results. The OPTIMA 7 performs all the necessary calculations for particulate matter content, as well as the O2 and CO - measurement and allows transfer of results to either the printer, the data memory or to a management software. The FSM module is installed fine for transporting and operating in a case.

11 ADMINISTRATION OF FILTER The administration of filter cages allows you to create, manage and delete filter cages.

OK OK ,

11.1 Edit filter cage status

Generated and empty

The menu item "Generated and empty" shows all the cages that are generated but not yet in use. I.e. an initially weighing, FSM measurement or final weighing has not occurred.

Initially weighed

The menu item "Initially weighed" displays all initially weighed cages. With this function also initially weighed cages can be deleted. After deletion this filter cage can be weighed again.

Measured with FSM

The menu item „Measured with FSM“ displays all FSM filter cages which are used for the FSM measurement. With this function, the particulate matter measurement (sampling with FSM) can be deleted. Then, a new measurement with the FSM is possible. Please note: If particulate matter has already been collected in this cage, a new initially weighing is necessary!

Finally weighed

The menu item „Finally weighed“ displays all FSM filter cages which are finally weighed. If the reweighing is deleted; a new reweighing with this FSM filter cage is then again possible.

11.2 Delete empty filter cages Not be used FSM filter cages can be deleted using the delete function. To remove a FSM filter cage, the cage must have the status "generated and empty."

11.3 Generate filter cage If you want to use a new FSM filter cage, please enter the 3-digit number. The administration of filter cages then puts that FSM filter cage with the status "Generated and empty".

Page 18: OPERATION MANUAL PARTICULATE MATTER MEASUREMENT€¦ · , which manages the filters used and their weight and displays the final results. The OPTIMA 7 performs all the necessary calculations

12 General description of a weighing process This general description of a weighing process applies to both the standard weighing of FSM filter cages in the scale, as well as initial- and final weighing.

Switch on both the scale and the OPTIMA 7. (The connection must be made!) Make sure that the selected number of the FSM filter cages corresponds to the FSM filter cages that you are using. Handle each FSM filter cage so that a transfer of material is avoided in the FSM filter cage.

Please follow the instructions on the display of OPTIMA 7.

Placing the FSM filter cage in the center of the weighing pan, the elevations will prevent the filter cage from rolling.

Then the drying process begins.

Page 19: OPERATION MANUAL PARTICULATE MATTER MEASUREMENT€¦ · , which manages the filters used and their weight and displays the final results. The OPTIMA 7 performs all the necessary calculations

OPERATION MANUAL PARTICULATE MATTER MEASUREMENT FSM

19

The drying stops after about 10 minutes and the completion of the drying is displayed on your OPTIMA 7 also giving a beeping signal. Remove FSM filter cage within about 1 minute and then close the lid off the scale.

If the drying time was not sufficient, a re-calls the measuring system to drying process.

Please note the FSM filter sleeve is hot after drying!

Use for gripping the sleeve filter the supplied tweezers!

After that the OPTIMA 7 determines, the deviation of the zero point. Please wait a moment until the message appears.

Please confirm with OK. The display shows the result for the weighing.

The weighing process is completed.

Before you can reuse the scale again you must allow the scale to cool down for a couple minutes. This time can be shortened by opening the lid of the scale.

On the following page, the identification numbers of the instrument are displayed.

The result of the particle measurements can be stored in the data memory. The particle measurements can then be viewed, printed and deleted data in memory even when the corresponding cage number was deleted. Subsequent conditioning assignment in the result window is possible.

For more information on the documentation of the measurement, the print out, the data storage in the customer management and data processing can be found in the OPTIMA 7 manual as needed.

Take the filter cartridge with the included tweezers from the scale.

Please note the FSM filter cage is hot after the reweighing! Remove the dust filter from the filter cage. Please dispose of the dust filter (household waste). If necessary, clean the filter cage.

Enter the filter cartridge in the filter cage administration with the F3 key again. All filter cages data will be deleted or if the cage of a site is assigned remains the result in the data memory condition.

The administration of filter cages moves the FSM filter cage back to the initially weighed list!

A new measurement with this cage is now possible again.

18 GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE FSM SCALE 1. The FSM scale is not designed as a mobile element of the measurement of particulate mattern,

the scale remains at a site in the user's office

2. The FSM scale can be shipped in the manufacturer's packaging. For packing and unpacking the scale the notes in chapter 4.1 & 4.8 are to be observed. Retain for future use on the transport packaging!

3. The FSM scale is a precision instrument that can be damaged by improper handling. Note especially the assembling instructions for mounting the pan btacket and the maximum load of the balance of 50 g

4. The FSM scale as a precision instrument requires a suitable place. Please follow the appropriate instructions in chapter 6.5. Check it after the assembling the scale precision reached by the scale test program in OPTIMA 7, as described in chapter 6.6.

5. The FSM - scale compensated fluctuating environmental conditions independently. To avoid an erroneous determination of the dust content by changing the scale properties over a long period of time, to pre-and reweighing are performed each FSM filter cartridge within a period of one week.

6. The FSM scale must remain in the same place between pre-and reweighing a FSM filter cartridge to avoid measurement errors caused by positional changes.

7. Leave the FSM scale on power and turn it only with the On / Off - key on the FSM scale off and on. This will give you a quick measurement readiness of the FSM scale.

1. The FSM scale can only be operated via the OPTIMA 7 and may be used only for the weighing of FSM filter cartridges within the MRU dust measurement system.

19 UNPACKING, ASSEMBLING AND STARTUP 19.1 Unpacking Carefully remove the FSM scale from its packaging Max. load of the FSM scale is 50 g!!! (Risk of destruction)

At www.youtube.com you can find a short video film "FSM scale" (search for "MRU GmbH") for correct commissioning of the FSM level.

Max. load 50 g !

When assembling the pan supporter (bracket) pay special attention to the correct positioning of its mandrel. The mandrel features a cut for its unique positioning against the pan handle, thus preventing their contact and friction. Setting pan’s bracket: On assembling the pan bracket onto the mandrel, turn the bracket slightly, so that the cut on the mandrels are located in their unique and correct position,

19.3 Level setting

Important: An accurate weighing is only possible with a properly aligned scales.

Level the FSM scale using adjustable feet. Turn the feet in a way that the air bubble of the level is located centrally.

19.4 Place of installation

The FSM scale requires a precision instrument to reach a suitable place for the required measurement accuracy. One such suitable measuring situation can be realized by simple means in each office and the achieved accuracy of measurement to be tested.

• Since the FSM scale is heating up the filter cartridge of the installation site should provide good air circulation (space about 20 cm each side and 1 m above the FSM scale).

• The FSM scale is to be free of vibrations on a stable surface. For this, a separate table in office quality is sufficient.

• Drafts as it occurs near open windows or doors should be avoided during each measurement.

• Direct sunlight should be avoided during the weighing.

• A typical suitable location for the FSM scale is therefore a separate office table on one wall of the office to which any other work to be carried out during the weighing.

19.5 Connect OPTIMA 7 with the FSM scale

Connect FSM scale using RS232 cable adapter to the OPTIMA 7 AUX connector. Connect the power cord to the FSM scale.

The keyboard of the FSM scale is locked after power on. An operation is necessary only on the OPTIMA 7. Similarly, the display of the FSM scale is for information only, you will receive all the necessary information about the OPTIMA 7.

Before switching on the FSM scale, i.e. BEFORE a zeroing the scale tray must be used. If a zeroing after about 30 sec. is not completed, must be examined - whether weighing pan WITHOUT an additional weight such as one sleeve is in the balance.

For a re-zeroing the FSM scale must be disconnected from the power supply first.

Die The FSM scale is at any time via the On / Off - key switched off and on.

Page 41: OPERATION MANUAL PARTICULATE MATTER MEASUREMENT€¦ · , which manages the filters used and their weight and displays the final results. The OPTIMA 7 performs all the necessary calculations

41

Checking the scale

After the FSM scales unpacked and check was placed in a suitable place and aligned please use the function of the scale.

The re-test is used to determine the repeatability of the FSM scale.

OK

The aim is to examine the repeatability of weighing of the filter cartridge with the FSM scale is in the appropriate range. For this, a standard filter cartidge is measured several times in succession. A standard filter cartidge is any of your existing filter cartidges with new filter inserted.

Simply connect the balance to the power supply, turn the scale on and allow the system to stabilize for 2 hours.

Connect the FSM-scale with the OPTIMA7.

1. Select one of your FSM filter cartidges for this process as "Standard filter cartridge" and insert the number of this cartridge in OPTIMA 7 under the menu item "Create standard fiter cartidge".

2. Select the menu item "standard filter cartridge weigh" and perform a complete weighing procedure with this standard filter cartridge.

3. Repeat after the other later in the day or the weighing of the standard filter cartridge as often, at least 3 times

4. In the menu item "View Statistics" you can see the individual results of the standard filter cartidge weighings. In the menu item "Evaluation filter cartidge" you see summary of the stored standard filter cartridge weighings (number of weighings, minimum and maximum values, as well as mean and dispersion (standard deviation). The FSM scale is at your installation site be fully functional if the achieved dispersion is less than 1 mg

19.6 Bench test of the FSM scale

The bench test is used to check the FSM weighing accuracy for official measurements.

OK OK

Review of Weighing accuracy

a. Setting up the FSM scale, leveling, plug in, switch and for 2 h to acclimate.

b. Connection of a OPTIMA7 with the FSM scale.

c. Selection of test program and preparation of an empty FSM filter cage.

d. Weighing the empty FSM filter cage. Weight about 29 g.

e. Removing the FSM filter cage and cooling the FSM scale.

f. Reweighing the empty FSM filter cage plus a reference weight of 10 mg.

g. The reported difference in weight from pre and reweighing must be 10 mg +/- 1mg.

19.7 Measurement of the heating temperature of the FSM scale

The drying temperature of the scale is checked by a temperature gauge. The temperature gauge is to be inserted in a cage without filter (must be unlocked by cone, see photo). Then a 10-minute drying is carried out with this filter. Then remove the gauge: it should show a uniform density to 110 ° C.

Use this one-time-use temperature measuring strips, eg Article no. 2077.1 from Carl Roth.
