2 Description2.1 Use of the product as directedThe WSR 18-A is a cordless reciprocating saw for professional use. It is designed to be used for cutting wood,wood-like materials, metals and plastics. The power tool is suitable for use by right or left-handed persons. Anergonomically designed grip with synthetic rubber covering provides a comfortable, secure hold and makes the powertool less tiring to use.The power tool is designed for two-handed operation.Possible fields of use: Rescue services, public authorities, agriculture and forestry, construction sites, workshops,renovation, conversion and new construction, metal construction, timber construction, plumbing, heating and airconditioning system installation in which the types of cutting work listed above are carried out.Do not use the power tool to cut bricks, concrete, cellular concrete, natural stone or tiles.Do not use the power tool to cut pipes which still contain liquids.Do not saw into unknown materials.The power tool is designed for professional use and may be operated, serviced and maintained only by trained,authorized personnel. 6 Safety instructionsNOTEThe safety rules in section 6.1 contain all general safetyrules for power tools which, in accordance with theapplicable standards, require to be listed in the operatinginstructions. Accordingly, some of the rules listed maynot be relevant to this tool.

6.1 General power tool safety warningsa)

WARNINGRead all safety warnings and instructions. Failureto follow the warnings and instructions may resultin electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save allwarnings and instructions for future reference.The term “power tool” in the warnings refers toyour mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

6.1.1 Work area safetya) Keepwork area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark

areas invite accidents.b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmo-

spheres, such as in the presence of flammableliquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparkswhich may ignite the dust or fumes.

c) Keep children and bystanders away while operat-ing a power tool. Distractions can cause you to losecontrol.

6.1.2 Electrical safetya) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never

modify the plug in anyway. Do not use any adapterplugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Un-modified plugs and matching outlets will reduce riskof electric shock.

b) Avoid body contact with earthed or groundedsurfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges andrefrigerators. There is an increased risk of electricshock if your body is earthed or grounded.

c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet condi-tions. Water entering a power tool will increase therisk of electric shock.

d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord forcarrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool.Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges ormoving parts.Damaged or entangled cords increasethe risk of electric shock.

e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use anextension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of

a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk ofelectric shock.

f) If operating a power tool in a damp location isunavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD)protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the riskof electric shock.

6.1.3 Personal safetya) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use

common sense when operating a power tool. Donot use a power tool while you are tired or underthe influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. Amoment of inattention while operating power toolsmay result in serious personal injury.

b) Use personal protective equipment. Always weareye protection. Protective equipment such as dustmask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearingprotection used for appropriate conditionswill reducepersonal injuries.

c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switchis in the off‐position before connecting to powersource and/or battery pack, picking up or carryingthe tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on theswitch or energising power tools that have the switchon invites accidents.

d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turn-ing the power tool on. A wrench or a key left at-tached to a rotating part of the power tool may resultin personal injury.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and bal-ance at all times. This enables better control of thepower tool in unexpected situations.

f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing orjewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and glovesaway from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelleryor long hair can be caught in moving parts.

g) If devices are provided for the connection of dustextraction and collection facilities, ensure theseare connected and properly used. Use of dustcollection can reduce dust-related hazards.

6.1.4 Power tool use and carea) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct

power tool for your application. The correct powertool will do the job better and safer at the rate forwhich it was designed.

b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does notturn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot becontrolled with the switch is dangerous and must berepaired.

c) Disconnect the plug from the power sourceand/or the battery pack from the power toolbefore making any adjustments, changingaccessories, or storing power tools. Suchpreventive safety measures reduce the risk ofstarting the power tool accidentally.

d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of chil-dren and do not allow persons unfamiliar with thepower tool or these instructions to operate thepower tool. Power tools are dangerous in the handsof untrained users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment orbinding of moving parts, breakage of parts andany other condition that may affect the powertool’s operation. If damaged, have the power toolrepaired before use.Many accidents are caused bypoorly maintained power tools.

f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly main-tained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are lesslikely to bind and are easier to control.

g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc.in accordance with these instructions taking intoaccount the working conditions and the work tobe performed. Use of the power tool for opera-tions different from those intended could result in ahazardous situation.

6.1.5 Battery tool use and carea) Recharge only with the charger specified by the

manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one typeof battery pack may create a risk of fire when usedwith another battery pack.

b) Use power tools only with specifically designatedbattery packs. Use of any other battery packs maycreate a risk of injury and fire.

c) When battery pack is not in use, keep it awayfrom other metal objects, like paper clips, coins,keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects,that can make a connection from one terminal toanother. Shorting the battery terminals together maycause burns or a fire.

d) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejectedfrom the battery, avoid contact. If contact acci-dentally occurs, flushwithwater. If liquid contactseyes, additionally seekmedical help.Liquid ejectedfrom the battery may cause irritation or burns.

6.1.6 Servicea) Have your power tool servicedby aqualified repair

person using only identical replacement parts.This will ensure that the safety of the power tool ismaintained.

6.2 Additional safety instructions6.2.1 Personal safetya) Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces,

when performing an operation where the cuttingaccessory may contact hidden wiring. Cutting ac-cessory contacting a "live" wire may make exposedmetal parts of the power tool "live" and could givethe operator an electric shock.

b) Use clamps or another practical way to secureand support the workpiece to a stable platform.Holding the work by hand or against your body leavesit unstable and may lead to loss of control.

c) Wear ear protectors. Exposure to noise can causehearing loss.

d) Always hold the power tool securely with bothhands on the grips provided. Keep the grips dry,clean and free from oil and grease.

e) Breathing protection must be worn if the powertool is used without a dust removal system forwork that creates dust.

f) Improve the blood circulation in your fingers byrelaxing your hands and exercising your fingersduring breaks between working.

g) Operate the power tool only as intended andwhenit is in faultless condition.

h) Wear protective gloves when changing inserttools as the insert tools get hot during use.

i) Switch the power tool on only after bringing it intothe working position.

j) Engage the safety lock before storing or trans-porting the tool.

k) Avoid unintentional starting. Never carry thepower tool with your finger on the controlswitch. Remove the battery from the powertool during work breaks, before carrying outmaintenance, before changing cutting tools andbefore transporting the power tool.

l) Children must be instructed not to play with thepower tool.

m) The power tool is not intended for use by children,by debilitated persons or thosewho have receivedno instruction or training.

n) WARNING: Some dust created by grinding, sand-ing, cutting and drilling contains chemicals knownto cause cancer, birth defects, infertility or otherreproductive harm; or serious and permanent res-piratory or other injury. Some examples of thesechemicals are: lead from lead-based paints, crys-talline silica from bricks, concrete and other masonryproducts and natural stone, arsenic and chromiumfrom chemically-treated lumber. Your risk from theseexposures varies, depending on how often you dothis type of work. To reduce exposure to thesechemicals, the operator and bystanders shouldwork in a well-ventilated area, work with ap-proved safety equipment, such as respiratory pro-tection appropriate for the type of dust generated,and designed to filter out microscopic particlesand direct dust away from the face and body.Avoid prolonged contact with dust. Wear protec-tive clothing and wash exposed areas with soapand water. Allowing dust to get into your mouth,eyes, or to remain on your skin may promote absorp-tion of harmful chemicals.

6.2.2 Power tool use and carea) Secure the workpiece. Use clamps or a vice to

secure the workpiece. The workpiece is thus heldmore securely than by hand and both hands remainfree to operate the power tool.

b) Check that the insert tools used are compatiblewith the chuck system and that they are securedin the chuck correctly.

6.2.3 Special safety instructions for reciprocatingsaws

a) Always guide the power tool away from your bodywhen working with it.

b) Never position your hands ahead of or on the sawblade.

c) Never cut into unknown materials and keep theline of cut above and below the workpiece free ofobstacles. If the saw blade strikes an object it maycause the power tool to kick back.

d) Apply moderate pressure and set the power toolto a suitable stroke rate when using the pipe-cutting adapter (accessory), especially when cut-ting large-diameter pipes. This will help to preventthe power tool overheating.

e) The power toolmust be pressed against thework-piece until the AVR contact shoe makes firm con-tact. This helps ensure maximum safety and goodperformance.

f) Wear suitable protective clothing to protect youfrom hot cuttings.

g) Never use the power tool without a fully functionalhand guard.

h) Before beginning thework, check the hazard clas-sification of the dust that will be produced. Usean industrial vacuum cleaner with an officiallyapproved protection classification in compliancewith locally applicable dust protection regula-tions.

i) WARNING!When cutting through pipes, e.g. whencarrying out demolition or installationwork, checkto ensure that the pipes no longer contain liq-uids and empty them if necessary. When cuttingthrough pipes, hold the power tool above the levelof the pipe you are cutting through. The powertool incorporates no protective measures to preventingress of water or dampness. Liquids running out ofpipes may cause a short circuit in the power tool.

j) Do not use the power tool to cut bricks, concrete,cellular concrete, natural stone or tiles.

k) Do not attempt to cut material thicker than thespecified max. thickness for which the saw isdesigned and do not use unsuitable saw blades(reciprocating saw blades of the wrong size or notequipped with a ¹⁄₂" connection end).

l) The transport lock should always be engagedwhen the power tool is not in use.

6.2.4 Battery tool use and carea) Observe the special instructions applicable to the

transport, storage and use of Li-ion batteries.b) Do not expose batteries to high temperatures or

fire. This presents a risk of explosion.c) Do not disassemble, squash or incinerate batter-

ies and do not subject them to temperatures over80°C. A risk of fire, explosion or injury through con-tact with caustic substances may otherwise result.

d) Do not use batteries other than those approvedfor use with the applicable power tool or appli-ance. Use of other batteries or use of the battery forpurposes for which it is not intended presents a riskof fire and explosion.

e) Do not charge or continue to use damaged bat-teries (e.g. batteries with cracks, broken parts,bent or pushed-in and/or pulled-out contacts).

f) Use only the Hilti chargers listed under “Acces-sories”.

g) Ensure that the outer surfaces of the battery areclean and dry before inserting it in the corre-sponding charger. Read the operating instruc-tions for the charger for further information aboutthe charging procedure.

h) If the battery gets too hot to touch, this may indicatethat it is faulty. Place the tool in a location whereit can be kept under observation, well away fromflammable materials, and allow it to cool down.Contact Hilti Service after the battery has beenallowed to cool.

6.2.5 Electrical safety

Before beginning work, check the working area (e.g.using a metal detector) to ensure that no concealedelectric cables or gas and water pipes are present.

External metal parts of the power tool may becomelive, for example, when an electric cable is damagedaccidentally. This presents a serious risk of electric shock.

6.2.6 Work area safetyEnsure that the workplace is well ventilated. Exposureto dust at a poorly ventilated workplace may result indamage to the health.

6.2.7 Personal protective equipment

The user and any other persons in the vicinity mustwear suitable eye protection, a hard hat, ear protec-tion, protective gloves and breathing protection whilethe tool is in use.

7 Before use

DANGERWear protective gloves when changing insert tools asthe insert tools get hot during use.

7.1 Changing the saw bladeCAUTIONWear protective gloves. The cutting edges of the sawblade teeth are sharp. The cutting edges may present arisk of injury.

7.1.1 Fitting the saw blade 2 3

1. Engage the transport lock.2. Pull the battery out of the power tool.3. Check that the connection end of the blade is clean

and lightly greased. Clean it and grease it if neces-sary.NOTE Use only saw blades equipped with a ¹⁄₂"connection end (fig. 3).

4. Turn the blade holder locking sleeve counterclock-wise and hold it in this position.

5. Push the saw blade into the blade holder from thefront end of the tool.

6. Release the locking sleeve and allow it to return toits original position with a “click”.

7. Grip and pull the saw blade to check that it is lockedin position.

7.1.2 Removing the saw blade 4

1. Engage the transport lock.2. Pull the battery out of the power tool.3. Turn the blade holder locking sleeve counterclock-

wise and hold it in this position.4. Pull the blade forward out of the blade holder.5. Release the locking sleeve and allow it to move back

to its original position.

7.2 Battery use and careNOTEBattery performance drops at low temperatures. Neveruse the battery until the cells become fully discharged.Change to the second battery as soon as a drop in per-formance is noticed. Recharge the battery immediatelyso that it is ready for reuse.

Store the battery in a cool, dry place. Never store thebattery where it is exposed to direct sunlight or sourcesof heat, e.g. on heaters / radiators or behind a motorvehicle windscreen. Batteries that have reached the endof their life must be disposed of safely and correctly toavoid environmental pollution.

7.3 Charging the battery

DANGERUse only the Hilti batteries and Hilti chargers listedunder “Accessories”.

7.3.1 Charging a new battery for the first timeA new battery must be charged correctly for the first timebefore use. This will ensure that the cells form correctly.Incorrect initial charging may have a permanent, negativeeffect on battery capacity. Please refer to the applicablebattery charger’s operating instructions for informationabout initial charging.

7.3.2 Recharging a batteryEnsure that the outer surfaces of the battery are cleanand dry before inserting it in the corresponding charger.Read the operating instructions for the charger for furtherinformation about the charging procedure.Li-ion batteries are ready for use at any time, even whenonly partly charged. Charging progress is indicated bythe LED display (see charger operating instructions).

7.4 Fitting the battery 5

DANGERUse only the Hilti batteries and Hilti chargers listedunder “Accessories”.

CAUTIONCheck that the terminals on the battery and in thepower tool are free from foreign objects before in-serting the battery in the power tool.

1. Push the battery into the power tool from the rearuntil it is heard to engage with a double click.

2. CAUTION A falling battery may present a risk ofinjury to yourself or others.Check that the battery is seated securely in thepower tool.

7.5 Removing the battery 6

1. Press both battery release buttons.2. Pull the battery out of the power tool toward the

rear.

7.6 Transport and storage of battery packsPull the battery pack out of the locked position (workingposition) and move it into the first click-stop position(transport position).If you disconnect a battery pack from the power toolfor transport or storage, make sure that the contacts ofthe battery pack are not short-circuited. Remove loosemetal parts such as screws, nails, clamps, loose screwbits, wires or metal swarf from the case, toolbox ortransport container, or prevent these parts from cominginto contact with the battery packs.Observe national and international transport regulationswhen shipping battery packs (transportation by road, rail,sea or air).

8 Operation

NOTETo ensure good cutting performance and minimize stresson the power tool, use only saw blades that are in goodcondition.

CAUTIONDo not overload the power tool. It will work moreefficiently and more safely within its intended perfor-mance range.

CAUTIONWear protective glasses and a dust mask. The sawingoperation swirls up dust and wood chips into the air. Thedust and wood chips may be harmful to the eyes andrespiratory system.

CAUTIONDusts are hazardous to the health and can cause respi-ratory or skin diseases and allergic reactions.

WARNINGCertain dusts are considered to be carcinogenic (causecancer). These include mineral dust as well as oak and/orbeech wood dust, particularly in conjunction with addi-tional substances used for the treatment of wood (chro-mate, wood preservatives).

CAUTIONWear ear protectors. The power tool and the sawingoperation generate noise. Exposure to noise can causehearing loss.

CAUTIONWear protective gloves. The cutting edges of the sawblade teeth are sharp. The cutting edges may present arisk of injury.

CAUTIONAlways guide the power tool away from your bodywhen working with it.

CAUTIONDo not lift the power tool away from the workpieceuntil it has stopped completely.

CAUTIONLay the power tool down only when it has come to acomplete stop.

CAUTIONThe saw blade gets hot during intensive use. Wear pro-tective gloves. Contact with the saw blade presents arisk of burning injury.

8.1 Safe operation 7 8 9

DANGERThe power tool must be pressed against the work-piece until the AVR contact shoe makes firm contact.This helps ensure maximum safety and good perfor-mance.

DANGERAlways use saw blades that project beyond the work-piece over the entire length of the blade stroke. Thiswill help to avoid violent kickback.

WARNINGAlways hold the power tool securely with both handson the grips provided. Never use the power tool with-out a fully functional hand guard. The blade holderpresents a risk of injury.

8.2 Switching on1. Disengage the transport lock.2. Press the control switch.

8.3 Switching off1. Release the control switch.2. Engage the transport lock.

8.4 Plunge cutting 10

CAUTIONApply the appropriate safety measures at the rear ofthe workpiece when plunge sawing. Use only suitablesaw blades (length as short as possible).

Use the plunge cutting technique only on soft materials.It takes a little practice to start the cut, without previouslydrilling a starting hole, by plunging the blade into thesurface while the power tool is running. This is possibleonly with short saw blades. For plunge cutting, the powertool may be used either in the normal position or in thereversed position.1. Bring the forward edge of the AVR contact shoe into

contact with the surface of the material to be cut.2. Disengage the transport lock.3. Press the control switch.4. Press the forward edge of the contact shoe against

the surface and begin the plunge action by slowlyincreasing the angle of attack. To prevent stalling, itis important that the power tool is running before thesaw blade is brought into contact with the surface.

5. Once the saw blade has penetrated right throughthe material, bring the power tool into the normalworking position (AVR contact shoe flush with theworkpiece) and then continue sawing along the cut-ting line.

9 Care and maintenanceCAUTIONBefore beginning cleaning, remove the battery fromthe power tool in order to prevent unintentional start-ing.

9.1 Care and maintenanceKeep the blades clean, especially their connection ends,in order to ensure trouble-free operation of the bladeholder.Keep the blade holder clean.The power tool has been adequately lubricated duringassembly. After a long period of heavy use it is recom-mended that the power tool is inspected by Hilti. Thiswill help to extend the life of the power tool and avoidunnecessary repair costs.

9.2 Care of the power toolCAUTIONKeep the power tool, especially its grip surfaces,clean and free from oil and grease. Do not use clean-ing agents which contain silicone.

The outer casing of the power tool is made from impact-resistant plastic. Sections of the grip are made from asynthetic rubber material.Never operate the power tool when the ventilation slotsare blocked. Clean the ventilation slots carefully usinga dry brush. Do not permit foreign objects to enter theinterior of the power tool. Clean the outside of the powertool at regular intervals with a slightly damp cloth. Donot use a spray, steam pressure cleaning equipment or

running water for cleaning. This may negatively affect theelectrical safety of the power tool.

9.3 Care of the Li-ion batteryAvoid entrance of moisture.Charge the battery fully before using it for the first time.In order to achievemaximumbattery life, stopdischargingthe battery as soon as a significant drop in performanceis noticed.NOTEIf use of the power tool continues, further battery dis-charge will be stopped automatically before the batterycells suffer damage.

Charge the battery with the Hilti charger approved for usewith Li-ion batteries.NOTE- A conditioning charge (as is required with NiCd orNiMH batteries) is not necessary.

- Interruption of the charging procedure has no negativeeffect on battery life.

- Charging can be started at any time with no negativeeffect on battery life. There is no memory effect (aswith NiCd or NiMH batteries).

- For best results, batteries should be stored fullycharged in a cool dry place. Avoid charging the batteryin places subject to high ambient temperatures (e.g. ata window) as this has an adverse effect on battery lifeand increases the rate of self-discharge.

- If the battery no longer reaches full charge, it mayhave lost capacity due to aging or overstressing. Itis possible to continue working with a battery in thiscondition but it should be replaced in good time.

9.4 MaintenanceWARNINGRepairs to the electrical section of the power tool maybe carried out only by trained electrical specialists.

Check all external parts of the power tool for damageat regular intervals and check that all controls operatefaultlessly. Do not operate the power tool if parts aredamaged or when the controls do not function faultlessly.If necessary, the power tool should be repaired by HiltiService.

9.5 Changing the AVR contact shoe 11

The AVR contact shoe can be changed when required.Before changing the contact shoe, engage the transportlock and remove the battery from the power tool.1. Engage the transport lock.2. Remove the battery.3. Remove the saw blade.4. Pull the rectangular plastic pin forward. It is located

between the two AVR contact shoe guide pins.5. Pull the AVR contact shoe out.6. Push the rectangular plastic part back into its original

position.7. Grease the AVR contact shoe lightly and insert it

fully in the guides.8. Check to ensure that the contact shoe engages

correctly.

9.6 Checking the power tool after care andmaintenance

After carrying out care and maintenance work on thepower tool, check that all protective and safety devicesare fitted and that they function faultlessly.

11 DisposalCAUTIONImproper disposal of the equipment may have serious consequences: the burning of plastic components generatestoxic fumes which may present a health hazard. Careless disposal may permitunauthorized and improper use of the equipment. This may result in serious personal injury, injury to third parties andpollution of the environment.

CAUTIONDispose of defective batteries without delay. Keep them out of reach of children. Do not attempt to open or dismantlebatteries and do not dispose of them by incineration.

CAUTIONDispose of the batteries in accordance with national regulations or return them to Hilti.

Most of the materials from which Hilti power tools or appliances are manufactured can be recycled. The materialsmust be correctly separated before they can be recycled. In many countries, Hilti has already made arrangements fortaking back your old power tools or appliances for recycling. Please ask your Hilti customer service department orHilti representative for further information.

BatteriesHilti Li-ion batteries contain lithium-ion cells.Both you and Hilti bear responsibility for the recycling of worn-out batteries in keeping withenvironmental protection requirements.Do not throw worn-out batteries into household waste, a fire or water.

12 Manufacturer’s warranty - toolsHilti warrants that the tool supplied is free of defects inmaterial and workmanship. This warranty is valid so longas the tool is operated and handled correctly, cleanedand serviced properly and in accordance with the HiltiOperating Instructions, and the technical system is main-tained. This means that only original Hilti consumables,components and spare parts may be used in the tool.

This warranty provides the free-of-charge repair or re-placement of defective parts only over the entire lifespanof the tool. Parts requiring repair or replacement as aresult of normal wear and tear are not covered by thiswarranty.

Additional claims are excluded, unless stringent na-tional rules prohibit such exclusion. In particular, Hiltiis not obligated for direct, indirect, incidental or con-sequential damages, losses or expenses in connec-tion with, or by reason of, the use of, or inability touse the tool for any purpose. Implied warranties ofmerchantability or fitness for a particular purpose arespecifically excluded.

For repair or replacement, send the tool or related partsimmediately upon discovery of the defect to the addressof the local Hilti marketing organization provided.

This constitutes Hilti’s entire obligation with regard towarranty and supersedes all prior or contemporaneouscomments and oral or written agreements concerningwarranties.
