Invocation

We begin in the name of the Father and the ☩ Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Thanksgiving for Baptism

We give you thanks, holy and gracious God, for you created the waters of the earth: wide oceans, rushing streams, clear lakes, mighty rivers: Lake Erie, the Cuyahoga River, Mohican, Tuscarawas, Lake Rockwell, Meyers Lake, Mosquito Creek, and waters all around us.

You led your people through the sea and called them to life in covenant with you.

Your Son was baptized in the river Jordan to begin his mission among us.

As the Holy Spirit, you renew the face of the earth.

Through this water remind us of the gift of baptism.

Renew us in your promise so that we may serve this world in all its need; through Jesus Christ, our Risen Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Almighty God,

who gives us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Reading John 14:16-26 (NRSV)

16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 18I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.” 22Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. 25I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.”

Prayers Litany A & B, The Book of Common Worship

Holy Spirit, Creator, in the beginning you moved over the waters. From your breath all creation drew life. Without you, life turns to dust.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Holy Spirit, Counselor, by your inspiration, the prophets spoke and acted in faith. You clothed them in power to be bearers of your Word.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Holy Spirit, Power, you came as fire to Jesus’ disciples; you gave them voice before the rulers of this world.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, you created us children of God; you make us the living temple of your presence; you intercede within us with sighs too deep for words.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Holy Spirit, Giver of life, you guide and make holy the church you create; you give gifts – the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, that the whole creation may become what you want it to be.

Come, Holy Spirit!

True and only Light, from whom comes every good gift: Send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind. Open the horizons of our minds by the flame of your wisdom. Loosen our tongues to show your praise, for only in your Spirit can we voice your words of peace and acclaim Jesus as Lord.

Amen.

Christ has gathered the church in unity through the Spirit. With sure hope, let us pray…

Maker of all things, in the beginning, you created heaven and earth. In the fullness of time, you restored all things in Christ. Renew our world, in this day, with your grace and mercy.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Life of the world, you breathed life into the flesh you created. Now, by your Spirit, breathe new life into the children of earth. Turn hatred into love, sorrow into joy, and war into peace.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Lover of concord, you desire the unity of all Christians. Set aflame the whole church with the fire of your Spirit. Unite us to stand in the world as a sign of your love.

Lord, hear our prayer.

God of compassion, through your Spirit you supply every human need. Heal the sick, and comfort the distressed. Befriend the friendless, and help the helpless.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Source of peace, your Spirit restores our anxious spirits. In our labor, give us rest; in our temptation, strength; in our sadness, consolation.

Lord, hear our prayer.

God eternal, as you sent upon the disciples the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, look upon your church and open our hearts to the power of the Holy Spirit. Kindle in us the fire of your love, and strengthen our lives for service in your kingdom; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Prayer

O Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us, and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Opening of Assembly

As in one body we have many members,

so we, who are many, are one body in Christ.

Where two or three are gathered in my name, says the Lord,

I am there among them.

Live a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Let us pursue what makes for justice and peace, and for mutual upbuilding.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

O God, you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

I declare this assembly to be in session in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

GATHERING

Confession

Let us pray.

God of dreamers,

We are often oblivious to the ways in which we oppress and are complicit in the oppression of our neighbors. We have sinned through our actions and our lack of action. Our sins are unique and varied and yet we are all consumed by the same fire of sinfulness. We have not loved and welcomed the LGBTQIA+ community into the church with open arms and a mindset of re-imagining. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us so that we may live and serve you in newness of life in your holy name.

When we have had power, we forgot what it is for.

We raised ourselves further up.

We have not used our gifts to speak truth to power in love,

to lift up the voices of those beaten down.

When we have been weak, we have let ourselves be told we are broken beyond repair,

and forgot the promise that each of us is Your child, made in Your image.

We have listened to the siren song of the world that says what we get is what we deserve.

We have forgotten your grace.

In this space, remind us.

Amen.

Hear the good news! God has not watched from far way, but has come near to be with us, to free us from our pain, and to offer us new life. God has declared that we are not separate, but children of one family, united in Jesus our Lord.

Amen. Alleluia!

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray:

We thank you, divine Seamstress, for you never stop creating. From the dawn of time, to our mother’s womb, even in the age to come, your creativity is as endless as eternity. Today you are knitting us, your people, into a garment of many colors. Stir up dreams and visions within us, making us restless for a new

Word of God Luke 4:14-21 14Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

20And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

Prayers of the People

Let us pray.

God of grace, we give thanks for the wisdom you have given this church to recognize the gifts for ministry which your Holy Spirit has bestowed on members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Bless their work for the sake of the Gospel and help us all to recognize and support wherever you are at work in the world.

Loving God, in your mercy…

Hear our prayer.

Give to your church the courage it needs to proclaim liberty for all captives of systems that oppress and dehumanize your people. Search our hearts with your Spirit and help us to see and repent of the ways in which we are complicit in the oppression of those who are on the margins of society.

Loving God, in your mercy…

Hear our prayer.

Raise up wise leaders at all levels of government who will recognize the strength that comes from diversity. Bless us with good government that is truly for the benefit of all.

Loving God, in your mercy…

Hear our prayer.

Sending and Blessing

God has called us into being through love and joined us to one another in love so that we may dwell in unity. May God bless us to be at home in any place and bless our homes to be places of justice and peace.

Go in the peace of Christ to love and serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God!

Affirmation of Ministers of Word and Service

Today we recognize

as ministers of word and service in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Having been called to the ministry of word and service, having been consecrated or commissioned to this ministry, we affirm that they are included on the roster of those ordained as ministers of word and service.

Address and Questions

The presiding minister addresses the ministers of word and service.

All baptized Christians are called to share in Christ’s ministry of love and service in the world, to the glory of God and for the sake of the human family and the whole creation.

You have been called as ministers of word and service to give leadership in the church’s mission to proclaim the gospel through word and deed.

You have been entrusted with the ministry of word and service in the one holy catholic church by the laying on of hands and by prayer.

One or more of the following scripture passages are addressed to the minister/s of word and service.

A reading from Luke: Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19 NRSV)

A reading from First Corinthians: There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4-7 NRSV)

A reading from Second Timothy: Rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of hands. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 1:6, 13-14; 2:1 NRSV)

The presiding minister addresses the minister/s of word and service.

Before almighty God, to whom you must give account, and in the presence of this assembly, I ask:

Will you continue to accept this ministry, believing that you are called by God to serve faithfully as ministers of word and service?

Response: I will, and I ask God to help me.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America confesses that the holy scriptures are the word of God and

are the norm of its faith and life.

We accept, teach, and confess the Apostles’, the Nicene, and the Athanasian Creeds.

We also acknowledge the Lutheran confessions as true witnesses and faithful expositions of the holy scriptures.

Will you therefore continue to serve in accordance with the holy scriptures and these creeds and confessions?

Response: I will, and I ask God to help me.

Will you continue to be diligent in your study of the holy scriptures and faithful in your use of the means of grace?

Will you pray for God’s people, encourage and support them as they worship and grow in faith, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living?

Response: I will, and I ask God to help me.

Will you give faithful witness in the world through word and deed, that God’s love may be known in all that you do?

Response: I will, and I ask God to help me.

Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them.

The assembly responds: Amen.

Acclamation by the Assembly

The presiding minister addresses the assembly.

Will you, assembled as the people of God, continue to receive them as ministers of word and service, sent by God to serve all people in Christ’s name?

We will, and we ask God to help us.

Will you pray for them, help and honor them for their work’s sake, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ?

We will, and we ask God to help us.

Charge

The presiding minister addresses the ministers of word and service.

Continue to care for God’s people, bear their burdens, and do not betray their confidence.

Serve the needy, care for the sick, comfort the distressed, and, through words and actions, witness faithfully to God’s love for all people.

Cross every barrier that stands between the church and its ministry in the world.

Seek out those places where the gospel of Jesus Christ meets the world’s need.

Empower, equip, and support all the baptized in the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Lead us all in proclaiming the gospel in word and song, in witness and service.

And be of good courage, for God has called you, and your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Stole

Whenever you wear your stole, remember it as a sign of your work, and live in obedience to the Lord Jesus, serving his people and remembering his promise: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(Matthew 11:28-30)

Blessing

The presiding minister continues.

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do God’s will, working in you that which is pleasing in God’s sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever.

Amen.

Let it be acclaimed that Joanna, Joseph, Ellen, Marilyn, Priscilla, Linda, Edward, Mary Ann, Jeanette, Betty Lou, Marla, Judith, Pamela, Deborah, Patricia, Lindsay, and Ruth, are ministers of word and service in the church of Christ, together with all who are set apart and ordained to this ministry: deacons who are called to serve among God’s people as together we bear God’s creative and redeeming love to all the world.

Amen. Thanks be to God.

Prayers of Intercession

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation.

For the mission of the church, that in faithful witness it may proclaim the gospel and in humble love serve all in need:

God of mercy,

For the nations of the world and their leaders, that they may work for justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person:

God of mercy,

Confession and Forgiveness

We are God’s people, sheep of the Spirit’s fold, lambs of Christ’s flock, sinners of God’s redeeming.

Amen.

Let us come before God, who already knows our hearts and welcomes our humility.

Loving God,

Our thoughts, our words, and our deeds are an open book to you.

You have seen where we fall short.

You know where we have strayed as individuals and as your church.

In your mercy, forgive us and guide us into right ways of being—

Ways of welcome, paths of mercy, habits of grace—

So that we may live renewed in the joy of our salvation, prepared, equipped, and ready to meet Christ in our neighbors and in your creation.

Amen.

God’s ways are not our ways and God’s thoughts are not our thoughts.

Before we were made, God brought creation out of nothing and peace out of chaos.

In this same love, God unyokes you from sin and binds you to a new life and new living in Jesus Christ.

Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom of God.

Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Most high God, you know our whole truth, and you give us refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Continue to raise up girls and women to serve Christ’s church and strengthen all in the vocations to which you call us.

And at the last, gather us with Miriam and the saints to dance on the safe side of the sea, through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

First Reading: Exodus 15:19-21

When the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his chariot drivers went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Psalm 57:1-3, 7-11 (sung by choir, congregation joins refrain)

1Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful, for I have taken refuge in you;

in the shadow of your wings will I take refuge until this time of trouble has gone by. 2I will call upon the Most High God,

the God who is with me to the end. 3O God, you will send from heaven and save me, rebuking those who trample upon me,

you will send forth your love and your faithfulness. (Refrain) 7My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;

I will sing and make melody. 8Wake up, my spirit; awake, lute and harp;

I myself will waken the dawn. 9I will give thanks to you among the peoples, O Lord;

I will sing praise to you among the nations. 10For your steadfast love is greater than the heavens,

and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. 11Exalt yourself above the heavens, O God,

and your glory over all the earth. (Refrain)

Second Reading: Galatians 3:26-29

… for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring,[k] heirs according to the promise.

Gospel Reading: John 4:1-30, 39-42

The Holy Gospel According to St. John

Glory to you, O Lord.

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John” 2 —although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized— 3 he left Judea and started back to Galilee. 4 But he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. 7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you[c] say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.” 27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” 30 They left the city and were on their way to him. 39 Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

The Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ.

THANKSGIVING FOR CLERGY WOMEN IN OUR SYNOD

Intercessory Prayers

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

A brief silence.

For the women who faithfully serve as bishops, pastors, and deacons; for those first to be ordained and those most recently ordained.

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

For the visible unity of the church, and for ongoing dialogue between church bodies that do not agree on the ordination of women.

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

For laypeople, who do vital work through church ministries of hospitality, outreach, teaching, music and dance.

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

For women and girls around the world who are ostracized from their communities for any reason, or treated as less than children of God.

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

For those whose hard work is rarely praised, and whose names are forgotten though their work lives on.

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

For those who suffer from bleeding disorders; for children who are too sick or weak to get up; for all who continue to pray for healing in their bodies especially those we name now (silence).

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

For the women who nurtured us in faith, whether in our family of birth or in the family of God.

Lord, in your mercy,

Receive our prayer.

Into your hands, most high God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting that your steadfast love is greater than the heavens and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds, through Jesus Christ, our strength and our song.

Amen.

Lord’s Prayer (layered voices of clergy women praying)

Blessing

May the joy of God’s freedom cause your spirit to dance;

May the presence of God’s peace bring wholeness to your body and mind.

May God give you blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe.

In the name of God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen

Installation to Office (Live Stream)

A reading from Romans: As in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. (Romans 12:4-8)

Will you assume the office to which you have been elected/appointed, and will you endeavor to carry out its duties faithfully, to the glory of Christ our Lord and in service to the one holy church?

Response: I will, and I ask God to help me.

People of God, will you support and pray for … in this work?

We will, and we ask God to help us.

The office of … is committed to you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Let us pray.

Gracious God, you call your people to service and give them varied tasks in the world and in your church. Grant … grace and strength, that they may serve you faithfully to the glory of your name; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do God’s will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in God’s sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.

Amen.

Closing of the Assembly (Live Stream)

Jesus said, You will be my witnesses

to the ends of the earth.

I chose you and appointed you

to bear fruit that will last.

Remember, I will be with you always,

to the end of time.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Direct us, O Lord God, in all our doings with your most gracious favor, and extend to us your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name; and finally, by your mercy, bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

O God, our beginning and our end, you kept Abraham and Sarah in safety throughout the days of their pilgrimage, you led the children of Israel through the midst of the sea, and by a star you led the magi to the infant Jesus. Protect and guide us now as we set out to travel. Make our ways safe and our homecomings joyful, and bring us at last to our heavenly home, where you dwell in glory with our Lord Jesus Christ and the life-giving Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

I declare this assembly closed in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
