MY CRANFIELD EXPERIENCE

The Cranfield IT Leadership Programme provided a way to checkpoint my own capabilities working in a senior IT position for Ordnance Survey against expert input from the Cranfield tutors, external speakers from industry and other course delegates.”

“Why did you choose the Cranfield IT Leadership Programme at Cranfield School of Management?I had been aware for some time that Cranfield School of Management is internationally recognised for executive learning and for the quality of its course content and facilities offered to delegates. From a personal perspective I wanted to broaden my strategic IT and leadership knowledge to help improve my own performance, fill knowledge gaps and build professional networks. In doing this I could make progress in meeting my own personal development goals and career objectives.

The Cranfield IT Leadership Programme provided a way to checkpoint my own capabilities working in a senior IT position for Ordnance Survey against expert input from the Cranfield tutors, external speakers from industry and other course delegates.

How did you find the experience? I found the programme offered a great blend of relevant and topical discussion facilitated by the tutors, examination of up-to-date case studies presenting real-life experiences and learning together with high levels of interaction between the delegates. Discussions often spilled out of the lecture and continued over dinner which helped to build inter-personal relationships and extend everyone’s professional network.

Course content was relevant, up-to-date and applicable to my personal development objectives. Undertaking various exercises I was able to tell everyone how good the Ordnance Survey mapping products and services are – and I even managed to identify a few loyal map customers in the process!

What were the highlights/what elements of the programme did you find most valuable? I believe the course has given me a wider IT leadership perspective. Understanding the context of how IT leadership roles are evolving, the various methods of growing high-

performers, ensuring that IT strategy aligns to the business strategy, building an effective sourcing strategy and achieving competitive advantage were elements of particular interest for me in helping Ordnance Survey address current challenges. The programme segments on understanding oneself and analysing people types were also interesting as it is not often I get the chance to analyse and reflect on myself!

What changes have you made as a result of coming on the programme / has the programme made an impact to you?I have been fortunate in being given the opportunity to build a new Digital Products capability within Ordnance Survey. This new technical delivery function will create innovative digital mapping products and services. I have been able to use some elements of the programme in designing this new department – especially sourcing strategy and growing high performers.

I very much enjoyed my time on the programme and have since returned as a regular guest speaker on subsequent programmes – talking about Agile Development in the context of a digital transformation that Ordnance Survey has undertaken.

How do you think it will benefit the business in the long term?I feel the programme has offered Ordnance Survey an up-to-date insight into current strategic IT leadership at a time when the organisation has just become a government company. During the transformation there has been a specific focus on leadership and I feel the programme has enabled me to hit the ground running in showing Ordnance Survey how IT can add value in meeting Ordnance Survey’s business objectives.

Having completed the programme I am still in regular contact with the other delegates - I know that I can pick up the phone or send an email to various CIO/CTO’s whom I met on the course to talk through pressing IT issues to glean a second opinion or specific insight in decision making.

personal development objectives...”

MY CRANFIELD EXPERIENCE

I found myself moving from a managerial role, to one of leadership and wanted to gain a fundamental and deeper understanding of myself, and the skills I need to become a truly effective leader to my new team.”

“Why did you choose the Personal Transformation for Leaders Programme at Cranfield School of Management?Edrington is about Great People, Leading Brands and Giving More – we strive to be better and go further, and that comes from great leadership. I found myself moving from a managerial role, to one of leadership and wanted to gain a fundamental and deeper understanding of myself, and the skills I need to become a truly effective leader to my new team.

How did you find the experience?I researched a lot and chose the Cranfield programme because it ticked a lot of my boxes – and based on what past participants had said, experiences they had on the programme, and the benefits they took with them as a result. I perhaps underestimated the journey of self-discovery that the programme takes you on, but found the experience extremely educational and highly rewarding. It helped me to better understand what makes me who I am and what I can use to help be the leader I want to be.

What elements of the programme did you find most valuable? I found myself in a group of people who I had never met before, but through listening and talking openly, quickly discovered that we all had much in common when it came to our limiting patterns to being better leaders and with

the guidance of our course tutor, we quickly helped each other to break down these barriers. A result of this was a realisation or “light bulb moment” for me, that the best way to help others is by really understanding them – and ultimately what drives them. You really do learn the value of spending more time listening to people and the benefits that this provides from both viewpoints.

Did you have a particular business problem to solve? Not a problem, more of a change of structure and as mentioned before, I found myself faced with the challenge of leading a large team so wanted to ensure that, in keeping with the Edrington philosophy, I could lead with conviction and a sound understanding of how I could be the best leader I could be.

What changes have you made as a result of coming on the programme?Just within the short time of the programme, my fellow delegates saw a profound change in my approach –they felt that after the programme they saw a more engaging, open and genuine person – feedback which I took with me back to my new role. In terms of the changes I have adopted, it has truly been transformational - my new outlook has allowed me to engage on a more informed and understanding level. Thanks to Cranfield, I now feel truly equipped to be the best leader I can be.

BGP is designed specifically for owner-managers and is centred entirely on the reality of your business – your current challenges, opportunities, future goals and ambitions. MY CRANFIELD EXPERIENCE

The Supply Chain Management Programme was one of the most rewarding development courses I have ever attended. The networking opportunities were fantastic and the quality of the speakers and course material was equally

top notch.”

“Why did you choose the Supply Chain Management Programme?Cranfield is an internationally respected business school with specific expertise in supply chain which was a unique selling point that attracted me to this programme.

How did you find the experience? This was one of the most rewarding development courses I have ever attended. The networking opportunities were fantastic and the quality of the speakers and course material was equally top notch. The course was structured in such a way as to drive open and adult-to-adult conversations with both the teaching faculty and fellow attendees, and I can honestly say I learnt something in every session.

What elements of the programme did you find most valuable? The idea of looking at time as a key component in the supply chain was extremely helpful and provided an easy way to measure supply chain effectiveness. There are many tips and techniques that I picked up over the course that I use daily but time as a key element of supply chain management is one in particular that stood out as incredibly simple and effective.

How has the programme made an impact on you?The programme has opened my eyes to lots of new tools I can use in my business every day. It has also been instrumental in changing my attitude on networking opportunities and industry events as a means of developing my technical and personal skills.

How do you think the course will impact on your long-term career development?I feel that some of the skills and relationships I have built on this course have provided broad personal development that can be used across a multitude of business functions. As such I believe my Cranfield experience will help strengthen my position as a senior supply chain professional as well as assisting a move to a more generalised role at a senior level.

MY CRANFIELD EXPERIENCE

It was really great to spend three days with different marketing directors from various sectors...”“

Why did you choose the Marketing Director’s programme at Cranfield? It’s suddenly 17 years since I graduated from University. In that time I have gained a lot of marketing experience, across sectors but all in the discipline of B2B marketing. I now manage a large team across EMEA and two years into this role I wanted to regroup. A senior marketing management course was applicable to my current role and level. I also wanted to check the best practise for marketing leadership. The Marketing Director Programme ticked every box on the agenda for me, compressed into 3 days. Cranfield School of Management has a very good reputation in the business world, so was a natural choice.

What elements of the programme did you find most valuable? The course programme was varied but relevant for my role, covering - what is marketing strategy, how to speak at board level, politics and power, marketing research, and the challenges of leadership. On top of the programme a key take away was the network. It was really great to spend three days with different marketing directors from various sectors, and find although we operate in wide ranging industries, we have common challenges.

What changes have you made as a result of coming on the programme?Following the course I plan to revisit our planning process, marketing research and look to adopt some of the tools outlined. Fascinated by the politics, the accountability, and the board room vocabulary. Now I’ll be challenging back – what do you want to know, what do you want to measure, and why?

How do you think it will benefit the business in the long term? The last few days have really underpinned my knowledge of the fundamentals of leadership, business and marketing. I manage a large team, and I will be sharing tips with my direct reports, so that they can in turn work with their teams. I plan to gather the managers in London in Q1 so we can challenge our marketing. The business will benefit as this has stoked the fire in my belly. I’m always keen to ensure we’re thinking about our assumptions and our customers – but now I’m armed with current thinking and will question our offerings from our customers’ experience and more critically, the value-in-use of our solutions.

MY CRANFIELD EXPERIENCE

I have a more balanced view to solving P&L issues and am far more able to stretch the thinking of my colleagues to consider the same.”

“Why did you choose the Finance and Accounting for Managers programme at Cranfield?I was selected to attend the course as part of a development programme within Tesco. This course was ideal as I am a Store Manager which means I hold lots of leadership and general skills but I was by no means a financial expert. I felt that this course would give me more confidence when dealing with things such as the balance sheet and P&L.

What elements of the programme did you find most valuable? The balance sheet work, P&L and income statement detail was extremely helpful to me. A benefit that I underestimated was the general discussion between the other course delegates, lots of sharing of information from very different backgrounds/companies was extremely useful.

What changes have you made as a result of coming to the programme?I feel far more confident approaching problems that require numerical analysis to solve or understand, I also feel much more confident that I would make the right decisions when faced with P&L issues.

How do you think it will benefit the business in long term?I have a more balanced view to solving P&L issues and am far more able to stretch the thinking of my colleagues to consider the same. For me I believe that personally attending the course will have further improved my overall performance within the business.
