Originally intended for white women only, pressure from African American activists as well as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her friend Mary McLeod Bethune, allowed 10 percent of WAAC volunteers to be African American women. The following year, WAACs were given military status and renamed the Women’s Army Corps (WACs). As the war progressed, it became increasingly difficult for the military to maintain basic services. Priority was given to food, equipment and supplies but the mail was set aside. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the all-black battalion of the WAC with 855 enlisted African American women and officers. Commanded by Major Charity Edna Adams, the first African American woman to receive an Army commission, she ended the war as a lieutenant colonel and as the highest ranking black woman in the Army. Known as the ‘Six Triple Eight’, the women received basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and sailed for England in early 1945. With the motto “no mail, no morale”, they worked in cold, dirty, rat-infested aircraft hangers with broken windows, without heat in eight-hour shifts, seven days a week to sort the immense backlog of mail. Although scheduled to work for six months, the battalion completed their task in three, despite having to identify mail for soldiers with common names or only nicknames. They often repackaged mail that had been damaged by rodents. The 688th was not attached to a male unit and managed all it’s own battalion duties, including a newsletter, Special Delivery . They hosted sports teams and sponsored dances at Army hospitals around England. With the backlog cleared, the 688th was assigned to duty in Rouen, France. Like the regular Army, the WACs were segregated; the 688th ran their own mess hall, guard duty and transportation of personnel. When denied firearms, the unit’s WAC Military Police trained in Jujitsu to keep out unwanted visitors. Again, the battalion was moved, this time to Paris, France. As they completed their final duties the war was ending. Members of the 688th were discharged and the battalion disbanded in February 1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey without official recognition of their accomplishments. Much later, members were awarded the European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal for their service.
