The hybrid contest comes as Lexus uses the high- profile event to introduce its compact CT200h to local buyers, as well as the drivers who will compete in the 2011 celebrity challenge. Hybrids have run in For- mula One, as well as major sports car races and some touring car events, but only in contests open to normal petrol-powered cars. No-one in a CT200h will be going for all-out efficiency at Albert Park, or running the car on pure battery power, but Lexus believes the AGP is an ideal way to change the green focus away from the ef- ficiency of the Prius to the potential driving enjoyment of the fuel-friendly CT. ‘‘We want to show that hy- brids can be sporty and they can be fun,’’ Lexus executive Peter Evans said. ‘‘This is a world first. ‘‘We also think this is the single biggest bang-for-your- buck opportunity to launch a new car in Australia. ‘‘It’s an amazing platform — with 4.6 million people at the peak television viewing and 310,000 spectators over four days.’’ Evans avoided discussing the potential on-track car- nage with the cars, but prom- ised a field with far more genuine celebrities than re- cent AGP celebrity contests. ‘‘Our target is to try and get a new group. Not so much new faces, but different faces. So not someone like Guy Leach,’’ he said. ‘‘We want high-profile people. We’re targeting a 50-50 mix of male and female and we’re going for people who match the intended buyer profile, so younger and almost half will be women. Most will be under 40. ‘‘We’re still working to fin- alise the list and we’ll an- nounce that in Melbourne next week. We don’t want a repeat of 2008 when the motocross racer Robbie Mad- ison cleared out and won by half a lap.’’ The celebrity race commit- ment will gobble the early supply of CT200h cars, alth- ough they will head to dealer- ships afterwards for promot- ional work and likely sale. Evans also promises a re- cord number of chances for non-celebrity drivers to take part in the race. ‘‘There will be 30 cars, 27 on track and three reserves. They will be made up of 24 cars representing our dealer sites, plus three competition cars. ‘‘There will be a consumer competition, a dealer compe- tition and a buyer’s compe- tition. If you sign a contract to buy a CT200H then you go into a draw to win a drive. ‘‘There will also be two winners in the race, an out- right and an index-of- efficiency prize.’’ The celebrity race pro- gram will be run by retired Australian rally champions Neal Bates and Coral Taylor, who drove for Lexus in Targa Tasmania with an IS200. They will be responsible for everything from car prep- aration at Bates’ race base in Canberra to the training and licensing of the celebrity drivers, although Lexus tech- nicians will also be involved in maintenance of the cars during the AGP meeting. Ferrari speedster the ‘pinnacle’ The Ferrari 599 GTO provides ‘‘a true racing car’’ experience THE Ferrari 599 GTO, the fastest-ever road car pro- duced by the legendary supercar company, has ar- rived in Australia. ‘‘The Ferrari 599 GTO re- presents the pinnacle of Fer- rari road cars in every area,’’ general manager for Ferrari in Australia and New Zea- land Kevin Wall says. ‘‘The bald performance fig- ures, amazing although they are, do not do justice to the remarkable breadth of abil- ities that it offers. ‘‘These range from being able to provide a true racing car driving experience on the track, through being the ulti- mate road-going ultra supercar to having the com- fort and luggage space that quite simply would not be ex- pected in a car of this per- formance level.’’ The Ferrari 599 GTO is an exclusive limited edition special which, in true Fer- rari tradition, is a completely new concept, albeit inspired by a production car. In fact, the 599 GTO is based on the 599XX, the advanced experimental track car, and can be considered almost a road-going version of that mobile testbed. The 599 GTO is reserved for just 599 clients and the car benefits directly from the technological transfer from racing and a record lap time set at Fiorano, Ferrari’s test track in Italy. Meanwhile, after the re- cord results achieved in China and Ferrari’s 21.2 per cent sales lift in Australia, Ferrari’s preliminary figures for the North American market show that 2010 was a record year for the marque. The USA, which has al- ways been Ferrari’s primary market, and Canada together have posted an increase in sales of nearly 20 per cent over the previous year, with more than 1750 cars sold.
