PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

ESBCHS - Celebrating 30 years!

I hope that your Thanksgiving weekend provided opportunities to spend some quality time with friends and family and to reflect on all the things in your lives for which

you are grateful. The many achievements of 2017-18 were celebrated last week at our annual Awards Night which saw a great turnout of students, grads, parents and family members. I would like to extend a special congratulations to all award winners, and a special thanks to our Awards Committee for their work in bringing together another great celebration of student accomplishments!

Our football, x-country, golf and volleyball teams are competing fiercely thanks to the leadership of our many staff members and community coaches who are making these important opportunities available to our students. Our Sr. Girls won the 21st Annual Phil Oh Volleyball Tournament, our Football team will play their first playoff game tonight, Ella Gifford competed well at the Provincial High School Golf Championships and we have a number of students heading to Vermillion for the High School X-country Provincial Championships so please stay tuned for further results!

Student groups are meeting weekly to help create and maintain a safe and positive school climate for our students with SAPP, QSA, and SADD all planning future activities. Please remind your children to get involved or participate in any of the wide range of activities offered at our school. I would like to thank our SAPP students for their work in helping to organize and run the

annual Terry Fox Run and BBQ as well as their involvement in welcoming and thanking our special guest Eva Olsson last week. Our entire school was honored to welcome Holocaust survivor Dr. Eva Olsson last week. Among the many things she spoke about over the 75 minutes, she spoke about her experiences and her messages of overcoming and addressing hate and she illustrated the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and expressing regular gratitude and stressed why we cannot be quiet bystanders when things happen. Many students took the opportunity to meet Eva afterwards and purchase some of her books. If you have not had a chance to speak to your child about this very special visit, please take time to do so.

Our Musical Theatre Program is also hard at work bringing together the production of “Mamma Mia” which will run at the Maclab Theatre in Leduc from November 14-17. These productions are extremely well done, and it is always a marvel to see how many talented students we have and even more special to see students display talents they were not even sure they had themselves! If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, make sure you get them soon! Wednesday, October 24th will mark our first round of parent-teacher interviews. Please see booking instructions on page 7

Parent Teacher Interviews provide opportunities to:

· Share information about your child’s progress, interests and needs. Please invite students to attend!

· Foster positive and respectful relationships between home and school

· Improve communication with your child’s teacher.

You may wish to ask some of the following questions during your interview. 1. Ask about your child’s work habits, and learning style.

2. How does your child get along with others?

3. Is there anything you should know about your child’s social/emotional progress?

4. Ask the teacher about the classroom rules and discipline, homework procedures and overall expectations for students.

5. Ask the teacher what is the most important thing you can do at home to support your child’s learning.

6. Is your child coping with the work load, level within the class?

7. What programs are available to assist home i.e. tutors, exam writing workshops

Try to approach the interview with a positive and relaxed attitude, remembering you and the teacher are partners in your child's learning. Don't be afraid to raise your concerns. After the interview.

It's important to discuss the meeting with your child and really congratulate them on their strengths. If the teacher made suggestions of things you could do at home, discuss these with your child and commit to following through with them.

expectations and policies. Now that October 17th is upon us, students and parents are reminded that cannabis still remains illegal for individuals under 18, and the consumption, possession or sale of cannabis by individuals of any age are still not allowed in school or on school property at any time. Please consult our school website for further information if necessary.

With the end of October approaching, we do ask that students think carefully about how they dress for Halloween. We ask that students refrain from bringing toy weapons as part of their costumes and that students not wear full masks that would prevent us from being able to identify them for reasons of safety and security. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in choosing school appropriate costumes to help make the day a success.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to express special thanks and appreciation to our outgoing School Council President Tracey Carr who has devoted countless hours to not only running our meetings but also for having the vision and the energy to ensure all of our operating procedures were updated to help our Council continue to run effectively. Tracey has helped perpetuate the positive culture and partnership that permeates our School Council and we are grateful for her many contributions. I would also like to thank the numerous other parents who are leaving us this year who have worked along with Tracey and have contributed a great deal to our school community as well. I am excited to see there are many new parents on our executive and I look forward to getting to know them and working with them in this very positive environment

DR. EVA OLSSON PRESENTATION

On Friday, October 12 staff and students had

the opportunity to hear Eva Olsson speak.

For over a decade, Eva Olsson has been

sharing her story. Eva draws on her life

experiences, primarily during the Holocaust,

to illustrate the power of hate, and the

importance of standing up against forces of

racism, bigotry and intolerance. Her courage

in breaking the silence and her commitment

to educating others on the importance of

standing up to injustice is a true inspiration.

Thank you to Ava Arnold and Cailtyn

Rastovski for their eloquent introduction.
