Major Influences….• Exploration and discovery of native cultures/countries during

this time period • Art from other cultures revealed that shapes and forms could

be simplified and rearranged to increase power and expression.

• Cézanne - who started to develop the style as an expressionist was also a primary influence on the movement.

One of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement.

Very influenced by African Art, Masks and Sculpture.

Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, 1907 This is considered by many the first cubist painting.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Europeans were discovering African, Micronesian and Native American art. Artists such as Pablo Picasso were intrigued and inspired by the stark power and simplicity of styles of those foreign cultures- reflected in his art.

Fernand Léger1881-1955

he created a personal form of cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative, or abstract style. His work was “for the people” –not just politicians and the elites. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of Pop Art!
