IN THE SPRING OF 1982, a young Uni-versity of Oregon football player named Cliff “Gibby” Gibson had just completed

four years of athletic eligibility and was looking forward to achieving success in life after college. But during his time as a stu-dent athlete, he had taken an unfocused mix of general elective courses and had not de-clared a major. Although he had earned 160 hours of course credits, his 1.6 GPA doomed his chances of graduating that spring.

“It was my own fault for ending up in that position,” Cliff says, reflecting back twenty-four years later from his office at Paychex, Incorporated, in Rochester, New York. “But in 1982 the NCAA academic standards were not where they are today in ensuring that student athletes graduated.”

Cliff began considering his options. He knew the easiest thing to do would be to leave school without his degree and start life anew. But a conversation with his father, “Whitey” Gibson, quickly changed his mind. “Son, for you to quit school now would be one of the biggest disappointments of my life,” said his father, who had graduated from Clemson University and was the first college graduate in the Gibson family.

“It was my moment of truth,” Cliff says. “I knew what I had to do.”

Armed with an application form and letters of reference from football coach Rich Brooks and athletics counselor Barbara Nichols, Cliff went to the office of James Reinmuth, dean of the College of Business Administration at the time, to announce his intentions of earning a business degree.

Reinmuth looked over Cliff’s transcripts and laughed. “Why should I let you into the College of Business Administration?” he demanded.

“Because for four years I sacrificed my body and soul to play football for the UO,” Cliff replied. “And now I’m prepared to do the same to earn a degree.”

Reinmuth relented. “Okay,” he said, “But first you’ll need to take business courses for one year and earn a 3.0 GPA in them. Then we’ll talk.”

A year later, Reinmuth shook Cliff’s hand. “Welcome to the business college,” he said. Cliff continued to dedicate himself to his coursework, and in 1984 graduated with his degree in marketing and finance.

Cliff credits much of his academic turnaround to learning to use the library. One of his college football teammates, Steve Brown, helped him develop a discipline for studying. “Steve insisted that I go to the library every day,” Cliff remembers. “I’m embarrassed to say that I had never been in the library before I became a business major, so I had to learn the etiquette of the place and how to use it systematically. I learned that it was

Then, in a no-nonsense, “we all know why we’re here” discussion, the council members challenged each other to help raise $130,000 by the next meeting—just six months away. They then surpassed this goal.

This level of commitment and determination is what everyone hopes to see and experience in a fundraising board, but it is not that common. It takes uncommon leadership and a special chemistry among board members. It takes a belief in the goals and values of the enterprise. It takes an understanding of the contributions that the organization can make to current and future generations of students.

This level of energy and commitment is a gift in the same way that money is a gift. The library is most fortunate for this support, and most grateful. We look forward to continued progress in the coming months and years, thanks to the dedication of our Advancement Council and our many generous supporters, alumni, and friends.

What a great year 2006 has been for the UO Libraries thus far! Gifts this fiscal year total

$2.5 million, with more than $9 million raised during Campaign Oregon. The distribution of gifts has been as gratifying as the total amount. Our generous library supporters have endowed new positions, strengthened the collections, contributed to student scholarships and internships, and provided funds for technology, which is a key component of a successful library. But perhaps the most significant development was the appointment last year of the library’s new Advancement Council.

The council has been around for decades, really. It began as a traditional “Friends of the Library” that helped to organize readings and other public events in the library. In 2000, the Friends group was transformed into the Advisory Council for External Relations. Its focus was on advising the library on its fundraising goals as well as external public relations. The council members devoted considerable time to learning about the library’s range of services and collections, as well as our challenges. The meetings were informative for both the council and the library administration.

Then, in the fall of 2005, the council experienced what is now commonly referred to as a “tipping point.” Several new voices were added to an already energetic group, and a new and ambitious agenda was established. The members voted to change the group’s name to “Advancement Council,” signaling a determination to set specific goals related to the campaign priorities. Deborah A. Carver

the one quiet, secure place where I could study without distractions. I enjoyed studying so much that I even took on the challenge of running the study hall program for the UO football team!”

After he graduated, Cliff’s business degree and drive to succeed soon landed him a job with Paychex, a leading provider of payroll, human resources, and benefits services for small- to medium-sized businesses nationwide. Now in his twenty-first year with the company, Cliff has risen through the management ranks to become an officer and holds an executive position of vice president, western U.S. sales.

“I owe so much to the library and to the people at the UO who supported me when I finally got serious about my education,” Cliff says. “And I believe in giving back to the organizations that helped me become the person I am.” To show his appreciation, he recently made a

pledge of $10,000 to the Investors Fund in the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, $10,000 to the UO Football Program, and $5,000 to the UO Libraries.

Although living in Rochester puts some physical distance between Cliff and the UO campus, he still has many fond memories and lots of friends back in Eugene. He travels to Eugene each year to take in a UO football game, and he made a special trip in 2004 to receive the Leo Harris Award, which is given annually to an alumnus letterman who has been out of college for twenty years and demonstrated continued service and leadership to the university. “My wife Karen, who has been so supportive of me all these years, also attended the UO,” Cliff proudly notes. “We were both very happy to be back in Eugene when I received the Leo Harris Award. It was such a great feeling to revisit the campus where I earned both my academic and athletic credentials.”

If you’re a fan of University of Oregon

athletics and have some favorite sports memories etched in your mind from your days on campus, you should visit http://libweb.uoregon .edu/catdept/digcol/athletics/. You can bring some of those memories back to life in the comfort of your home or office, thanks to library donors Dave and Terry Taylor, who have funded a library project called Athletics and the Academy.

The project uses material in University Archives—documents, photographs, physical objects, and audiovisual material—to tell the story of athletics at the UO. But its purpose is more than just to offer a walk down memory lane, according to Heather Briston, Richard and Mary Corrigan Solari University Historian and Archivist at the UO Libraries.

“When completed, the Athletics and the Academy virtual exhibit and digital collection will be a powerful new online research and teaching tool. UO faculty members and students can use it in their classes in history, sociology, education, sports marketing, and many other areas,” Briston says. “And because it is web based, researchers on sports and sports history will be able to use the resource from anywhere in the world.”

When complete, the website will offer a virtual exhibit highlighting exciting stories on sports at the UO. The digital collection will display

thousands of scanned documents and photos of UO athletes and athletic events that capture the rich legacy of the university’s athletic programs and the role they have played in the cultural and social fabric of the university.

Currently viewable in the digital collection are 559 scanned items drawn from several generations of UO sports. For example, you can go back to 1897 to see what Oregon’s sophomore women’s basketball team looked like dressed in formal attire. If your time at the UO spanned the era of Steve Prefontaine, you can see him in action in classic track and field photos taken in the 1970s. And there is a photo from the mid-1970s of the Duck basketball team sprawled on the floor of Mac Court, demonstrating why the team had the nickname “Kamikaze Kids.”

You can view all the images currently on the website by selecting Browse by Item from the site’s pull down menu, or search for documents and images by type of sport (basketball, football, cross country, track and field), by coach or athlete’s name, or by keyword. While photographic images currently predominate the collection, a number of scanned documents, such as letters and event programs and tickets, also are included. The digital collection is expected to grow over time, with the virtual exhibit to be launched in the coming year.

The many uo students and faculty members who think of

the Science Library as a second home were pleased and surprised when they returned from the holiday break in January to find that a furnishings facelift had taken place.

The upgrade was made possible by more than 2,000 individuals who responded generously to the library’s special telefund campaign in spring 2005. Special thanks also go to Greg Stephens ’00, owner of Kinnarps Office Furniture in Lake Oswego, Oregon, for his generous support of this project.

Students who use the Science Library were directly involved in choosing the new furniture by trying out a selection of different chairs and then voting on the ones they preferred. Victoria Mitchell, head of the Science Library, says that the student participation in the process made a difference: “We got quite a large response from students and were able to purchase the chairs most students liked best. The active student participation demonstrates that it really matters to them.”

Mitchell says that the ergonomically designed tables, chairs, and other furnishings had another immediate positive impact—she noticed a surge in library use. “I didn’t do a scientific study,” she said, “But I’ve definitely seen an increase both in the number of students in the library and the length of time they spend here.”

YWCA and a member of the planning committee for the new student union building and was named to all three women’s honoraries, Kwama, Phi Theta Upsilon, and Mortar Board.

Baker decided to create the UO Libraries endowment after Martha was diagnosed with cancer in 2001. “I thought, ‘What better way to give back to life than to the university we attended?’” he says.

The Martha Thorsland Baker Endowment currently funds preservation of and access to the Eugene Print Collection of historic photographs documenting Eugene, its people, and environs. Through the Bakers’ gift, the library was able to increase the size of the collection and make these unique images available online. In the future, the endowment fund will support preservation and public access to the library’s growing collection of resources related to history, literature, and life in the Northwest.

Supporting the university and the community is important to the couple. “I’d like our whole family to have the legacy of giving,” Baker says. “I’m trying to inspire our children—and I hope they will inspire their children—that the spirit of giving is terribly important.” The Bakers have four children and seven grandchildren.

“The UO library was a perfect choice for the gift,” says Ann Baker Mack, the couple’s eldest child and UO development communications director. “Mom was an English major who spent many hours in the library, which was right across the street from her sorority house, Pi Beta Phi. She has always loved to read and read to us every night when we were little.”

Mack said she and her siblings plan to continue supporting their parents’ endowment.

When retired physician Herbert C. Baker was a boy, he looked forward to the days his mother would go shopping. On those days, she would

drop him off at the Eugene Public Library at 11th and Willamette in downtown Eugene.

“I went to the basement and read for two to three hours during each of my visits,” Baker fondly recalls. It was there he developed his lifelong love of reading and appreciation for libraries.

One of five children born to the late founder and publisher of The [Eugene] Register-Guard,

Alton F. Baker Sr., and his wife, Mildred, Baker belongs to a family best known for recording events in Lane County and the rest of the Northwest.

So when he decided in 2003 to give the university $50,000 for an endowment in honor of his wife, Martha Thorsland Baker, it wasn’t surprising that he chose to support UO Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives. The division preserves and provides access to thousands of rare photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts of Oregon and Northwest history.

Both Herb and Martha are UO graduates—she in 1947 with a B.A. in English and he in 1949 with a B.A. in law after receiving an A.B. in history from Cornell University. He went on to get his medical degree in 1962 from the University of Oregon School of Medicine (now Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine). At the UO, Martha was vice president of the

Tip 1. If you have provided for the UO Libraries in your estate plan, please tell the library.

It is important for us to know if you’ve included the library in your planning for several reasons:• You are entitled to membership in the Arnold Bennett Hall Society, the campus donor society.• Your membership in the Arnold Bennett Hall Society may inspire friends and colleagues to put their estates in order and likewise support the library.• The library staff and the Office of Gift Planning can work with you to set up a fund that will be meaningful for you.

Tip 2. Support the UO Libraries through your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or other retirement benefit rather than with another estate asset.

An IRA may be worth twenty-five cents to your heirs, yet be worth a full dollar to the UO Libraries. When any person other than your spouse inherits funds from your IRA (or other retirement benefit), that distribution will be subject to income taxes and, if your estate is worth more than $1.5 million, may be subject to estate taxes. In some cases, the tax liability from both these taxes can exceed 75 percent of the value of the IRA. A charity, such as the UO Libraries, can inherit this asset without either tax being imposed.

Tip 3. When making a gift to the UO Libraries, give appreciated stock rather than cash.

For example, if you have the choice of giving to charity a gift of $10,000 in appreciated stock or $10,000 in cash, give the stock and keep the cash. Either one will give you a charitable deduction of $10,000 on your income taxes. However, if you give the cash to the UO Libraries and sell the stock, you will pay capital gains tax on the stock gain, leaving you with far less than the $10,000 it was worth. If

lifetime. However, by signing a deed that transfers the remainder interest in your home to the library, you will receive a tax deduction of a percentage of the value of the home. The table below reflects the tax benefits you would receive on a $250,000 home.

Your Gift Can Help• The Past Masters series provides full-text electronic access to the critical editions of major philosophers. Through electronic access, philosophy faculty members and students can study the incidence of individual words and phrases in the corpus of a philosopher’s work. The Past Masters works of the following philosophers are especially desired: Hegel, Kant, Hume, Berkeley, Locke, Nietzsche, Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza, and Wittgenstein. $600 to $2,500 per work.

• Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatic, a classic multivolume set originally published in 1960, has been republished by T&T Clark of England. $320.

• Preparing preservice teachers to teach music in K-5 schools requires them to have access to the tools they will use in the classroom. Help purchase a resource package that contains those tools, including a textbook, keyboard accompaniments, a resource book, a listening-map transparency, and audio CDs. $5,100.

• Help fill gaps in the collection by purchasing retrospective volumes of the Israel Exploration Journal. Volumes 43–55 (1994–2005), $650.

• The Cambridge History of Christianity is a seven-volume set. $160 per volume, $1,120 complete set.

• Buddhism in the United States, edited by Thomas Tweed, contains primary documents relating to the history of Buddhism in the U.S. Six volumes, $840.

• Human Rights and the World’s Major Religions examines human rights within the contexts of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Five volumes, $400.
