Healthy Working and Living

House of SwedenLocation: Washington DC, 2007

Reason for choosing Bona: As a subcontractor to Miljögolv, Bona was chosen for performance, environmental profile and options of design, being able to satisfy the specific visual floor character specified by the architect.

Result: A contemporary SwedishEmbassy with natural floors.

Products: Bona Parquet Décor Natural, Bona Prime Intense, Bona Traffic and a maple coloured filler developed especially for the project.

Creating sustainable solutionsBona has a lifetime commitment to wooden floors, with sustainability as a guiding star. We strive for lasting results on the floor and positive impact on the environment. Our approach enables the floor to last for generations. Working and living with Bona products should be good for both health and the environment.

Green indoor environmentToday, it is becoming more and more important to consider the effects of products on indoor air quality and evaluate them from a sustainable design perspective. This green building trend affects all in the industry, and we strongly believe that consumers of tomorrow will be even more concerned about the materials used in their homes.

Bona works actively with the indoor environment. We are Greenguard certified. This means that our indoor products are so low-emitting that they meet the stringent standards of the Greenguard Environmental Institute, a leading, independent, non-profit organization in the US.

Many of our finishes are used on LEED certified projects throughout the US. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a program through the US Green Building Counsel which promotes the use of products that are low-emitting.

In 2011 Bona received a new recognition of our work towards better indoor air quality when a range of Bona products was approved by DIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik). Since January 2011, DIBt is the German authority enforcing the industry’s toughest legislation for emissions. All Bona products, from finishes and oils to adhesives, submitted up to date have been approved by DIBt.

Good working environmentWe constantly focus on finding new solutions that improve working conditions for the craftsman. Our full-range portfolio from dust-free, ergonomic sanding machines to waterborne finishes provides a healthier working environment. Working with Bona products should always be safe, efficient and enjoyable.

Our philosophyOur mission is to bring out the best in wooden floors. Bona is a family-owned company founded in 1919. A long-term ownership has enabled us to work with a long-term commitment to innovation based on concern and respect. We always innovate with a longer, sustainable perspective in mind, considering the floor, the craftsman and the indoor and outside environment.

Through our innovative and systematic approach we are able to make continuous improvements over time. To create results is what drives our work.

We strive to continuously launch better products with less environmental impact. This has led to breakthrough innovations from waterborne finishes in the 1970s to dust-free sanding in the 2000s. Today, we are proud to be able to offer a full range of environmentally sound products for sanding, finishing, fastening and maintaining a wooden floor – throughout its lifetime.

Minimal dust

The Swedish TLV (Threshold Limit Value) for airborne dust from sanding is 2mg per cubic metre. With the Bona Dust Care Single (DCS), the reading is 0.1mg

per cubic metre, which is 5% of the limit. Sanding with Bona Belt without the DCS gives 1.4mg dust per cubic metre, which is also below the limit.

ENVIRONMENTAL AUDITLocation: Gothenburg, Sweden, 2006

Reason for choosing Bona: Bona was the only supplier able to meet Skanska’s environmental criteria thanks to the NMP-free finishes.

Result: An oak floor secured, filled, painted and finished using NMP-free products.

Products: Bona R850 adhesive, Bona Pacific Filler, Bona Parquet Décor Natural, Bona Prime Intense and Bona Traffic.

BRIDGEWATER HALLLocation: Manchester, UK, 2008

Reason for choosing Bona: Given only a short window of time in the concert hall’s busy programme to sand without damaging the hall’s magnificent recital organ, Bona was trusted to do the job.

Result: The contract was completed within the given timescale with no dust generated.

Products: Bona Mega, Bona Dust Containment System, sanding machines: Bona Edge and Bona Belt.

continuously to remove solvents. By offering the market waterborne finishes we have avoided emitting between 50-100 million litres of solvents. Environmental savings both for the environment and the craftsman.

the floor in any way we can to prolong its lifetime. For the environment it saves resources by caring over time.

NMP-free

NMP is a solvent previously often used in finishes. Being concerned about its possible harm, we have worked actively to reformulate our products. Bona

offers NMP-free finishes with higher product quality, proving a healthier solution for the craftsman.

Dust-free

We have revolutionized sanding with our dust containment systems and anti-static abrasives. Airborne wood dust is a known carcinogen and

a jobsite risk. Dust-free sanding gives a healthier working environment for the craftsman and a cleaner home.

Low VOC

When a finish dries on the floor, solvents evaporate. These evaporated substances are called VOCs (Volatile Organic Compunds) and go into the

atmosphere. There they contribute to the formation of smog. Choosing a finish and adhesive with low VOC/low solvent content leads to a better working environment and a general contribution to the environment.

Waterborne

Bona has driven the transition from solvent-based to waterborne finishes. Even waterborne finishes contain some solvents, but Bona’s have very low

content, 100g/l or less. These solvents are usually of a different non-hazardous type. Bona’s waterborne finishes are the best option for a safe product.

Silane-based

Bona is driving innovation away from solvent-based to silane-based adhesives. Silane-based adhesives are safe for both the craftsman and the

wooden floor. They are easy to work with and wipe off from hands, tools and floors. Setting quickly, they enable sanding sooner. Bona’s silane-based range is the best option for fast, easy and safe adhesion.

Ergonomic

Bona designs products from an ergonomic perspective. From plastic cans that are easy to grip, to ergonomic sanding machines. Our larger

sanders have a removable motor, while our Edgers are lightweight with adjustable handles. For our Edge design we are awarded the Red Dot Design Award. Ergonomic design makes the craftsman’s job easier and improves body position.

We are also a board member of the Swedish Association for Environmental Managers, constantly striving to increase our positive impact on the environment.
