The answer is pretty simple – other events I have been involved with used paid resources to undertake all of the work involved, and participants were charged a fee to cover the cost of paying for those resources. Our event on the other hand is run entirely by a dedicated number of our members volunteering their time and expertise, and every aspect must be managed down to the tiniest detail. That includes working out what food to buy, how much, organizing people to cook and serve it, clearing tables, washing up, and then doing it all again the next day. Plus the myriad tasks like organizing boats to use as water taxis, making sure they are fuelled up and ready to go, lights and buffers fitted, organizing a roster for qualified skippers and crew to operate them, ferrying visiting crew to and from their boats for about ten hours a day, refuelling, and so the list goes on.

commodore introduction

Hi everyone, and welcome to this, our “regatta” edition of our newsletter for 2019.

The Port Cygnet Regatta is the biggest event on our club’s annual agenda, with this year’s living up to its reputation as a great event, and the main focus of this edition is to celebrate the success and share some of the moments over the Regatta (March) long weekend (as well as other goings on at the club over the last few months).

After the last of the visitors to our club had departed and all of the packing away and cleaning up was finished the next day, I felt quite drained, as I know most of our hard working volunteers did, and pondered why our event takes so much effort to organize and run, over several months, compared to others I have been involved with.

So I would like to again thank all of our members, and some non-members, who have volunteered their time to make the event the success it was this year, as it has been in the past. To our ladies team, bar crew, safety boat crew, barby chefs, spit roast crew, race officials, water taxi crew, official handicapper, working bee helpers, table clearers, washer uppers, general helpers, photographers, media manager, registration and finance team, and support boat skipper – thank you!

And a special thank you to Jeff Rowe, our Regatta Director, to Kelvin O’Connor for his contribution to just about everything, and to Sue Stonehouse as head of our catering division.

And of course, thanks to our sponsors, who are listed at the end of the end of this publication.

As if the regatta catering wasn’t enough!

This year the club once again hosted the traditional dinner as part of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s VDL circumnavigation cruise, which is held every second year, just after the Wooden Boat Festival.

Our catering corps stepped up to the plate once again, catering for over 100 people on Sunday the 17th March, which was a great effort one week after the regatta.

A great time was had by all, both on and off the water, with high commendations for PCSC’s hospitality and for the great food at the dinner. JD

Farewell to the Black Duckers

Many club members will have met Klara and Riley, owners of the sloop Black Duck.

The intrepid couple have been part of the goings on at the club for a couple of years now and have become great friends of many of us. They have also done some great work doing all sorts of jobs from anti-fouling to repairs on members’ boats, as well as painting, wood cutting and stacking, to name a few – ready to try their hand at anything.

Klara and Riley are departing shortly for warmer climes, possibly as far as the Maldives, and hosted a well attended farewell get together at the club as part of regular Friday nights, presenting us with a revised version of the club burgee.

Their happy faces will be sadly missed, and we hope they will return to us after their adventures. JD

Gretel 11 stars in Annual Port Cygnet Regatta

The famous Alan Payne designed America’s Cup yacht Gretel II, skippered by well known Tasmanian sailor, Steven Shields, dominated the fleet in an exciting conclusion to the four race series.

The Port Cygnet Sailing Club Regatta was held over the 2019 Labour Day, long weekend, March 8, 9 and 10. This historic event, which first sailed in 1863, has continued to attract entries of all classes from yacht clubs across Tasmania.

On the Friday night, a fleet of yachts from Hobart based clubs competed in an overnight feeder race to Kettering down the D’entrecasteaux Channel. These yachts joined with yachts that had raced from Port Cygnet Sailing Club earlier in the day. On the Saturday the combined fleet competed in an exciting return race back down the Channel to Port Cygnet.

The main event of the Regatta on the Sunday comprised a 9 kilometre race in Kangaroo Bay, Port Cygnet, with 3 starts, the first being the Classic Division at 12 noon with yachts designed prior to 1960, Division 2 at 12.30pm following at 1.00pm by the faster Division 1 yachts. The Classic Division comprised Division 1 and 2 yachts, each of which elapsed times would count in the overall results.

All races in the series were conducted in typical Tasmanian autumn conditions, with warm days and moderate and variable winds. The courses allowed for a combination of long spinnaker runs and lengthy windward legs involving skilful trimming of sails and competitive race tactics.

Between race hospitality at both Kettering Yacht Club on the Friday night and Port Cygnet Sailing Club on Saturday night was exceptional with great food and the typical camaraderie that happens when sailors get together under the one roof.

The Regatta attracted a wide variety of yachts from beautiful timber classics to the latest in design and

performance. Feature yachts included the internationally recognised Gretel II, Tassie Too, a 21ft Huon Pine timber yacht which won the Forster Cup, the premier trophy for the class, (unequalled ten times between 1927 and 1952), along with Greg Muir’s magnificent timber classic Trevassa and the stunning 8m VARG – to name but a few.

The overall Regatta winner was Emotional Rescue whilst Gretel II took out both the Classic and Division 1 races to cap a stunning race record with an elapsed time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 6 seconds. She was a sight to delight all sailors with her tall mast and enormous spinnakers.

The Tasmanian sailing fraternity holds this Regatta in high regard. All competitors sailed back to homeports having enjoyed a great weekend’s competition having caught up with old friends and making new ones.

As if Christmas lunch at the club was not enough, we all rolled into the New Year with an impromptu NYE party at the Club, where everyone said they would be home in bed by 10pm, but it was well into the New Year when we got home!

Apologies to the live-aboards in the bay for the volume of the music that night. We tried to keep it down (well, sort of). Clearly Colin G was out of his depth here...

We also had a great start to the Twilight Racing Series, however 15 January and the subsequent electrical storm

started a chain reaction that affected our entire community. Bushfires and associated smoke and displacement from our homes both for us and our pets saw the club being used as a shelter for a period of days. A couple of our twilights were cancelled as a result and held later. While our income for this period took a hit, we are pleased that there was not significant loss of life or property.

Then the Regatta was upon us, then the Circumnavigation Dinner, both of which were a huge success. Feedback from all the visitors was excellent, as was the income from the events!. I must take this opportunity to thank Sue Stonehouse for her leadership in the kitchen, and to all our volunteers on the bar, in the kitchen and at the BBQ (and all the other things our volunteers do!). Without this assistance, the reputation of the Club as a “place to be” wouldn’t work.

We now slide into the more quiet part of the year, but don’t forget that the Sunday racing is still on for a while and the Friday Night Social events are still going strong!

We look forward to your continued patronage.

secretarY’s note

Some members have queried why each month there is a Committee of Management (COM) meeting, normally on the first Tuesday of the month, and an Ordinary Meeting, normally on the second Tuesday of the month. This means that COM members have two meetings a month.

The Model Rules set out that the COM manages the affairs of the Club. One of the long standing traditions and strengths of the Club is that the COM is able to make non-controversial decisions as required, and to inform and consult Members at the subsequent Ordinary Meeting. It is the norm that any contentious decision made by the COM is referred to the Ordinary meeting for confirmation and information. This allows for the membership to be actively involved in Club decision making and to be conversant with the COM decisions. It also allows the COM to (rarely) discuss matters in confidence if required.

I attempt to generate the minutes of the Ordinary Meetings the following day. These minutes are emailed to all Club members and placed on the website. Please read them, understand them and seek clarification as needed, especially if you were unable to attend the Ordinary Meeting.

A reminder that Club boat owners need to be aware of the restrictions on waste discharge of untreated boat sewage into Tasmanian waters which took effect on 1 November 2018. The restrictions apply to small boats carrying less than 16 people, and are outlined in Part 3 of the Sewage Management Directive 2013. You can view a copy of the Directive and related Boat Sewage Discharge Maps by visiting https://epa.tas.gov.au/epa/water/boat-sewage-management. Where possible, small boat owners are encouraged to contain any untreated sewage on their boat until it can be disposed of at a pump-out station on land. If land disposal is not possible, from 1 November boat owners are allowed to discharge urine into any waterway if it isn’t mixed with faeces and discharge any sewage into seawater if there aren’t any visible floating solids and it doesn’t cause any prolonged discolouration of the water. Provided that the boat is in water deeper than 5m, more than 500m from any operating shellfish farm, more than 1 nautical mile (1,852m) from any land including islands, more than 120m from any person in the water, outside any marina, designated mooring area or canal, outside any marine resources protected area established under the Living Marine Resources Act 1995; and outside any of the areas marked on the Boat Sewage Discharge maps available at: https://epa.tas.gov.au/epa/water/boat-sewage-management.

Happy boating.Chris Holliday

From the senior sailing captain

This year we re-introduced the classics division, based on the notion of boats designed pre 1960 racing separately in Sunday’s feature race. Seven boats competed, including the internationally recognised Gretel 2; Tassie Too, a 21ft Huon Pine timber yacht which won the Forster Cup, the premier trophy for the class, (unequalled ten times between 1927 and 1952); and our own Varg (Kraig Carlstrom).

Gretel 2 demonstrated her racing pedigree, winning the both classics division and the combined division one handicap honours, with Tassie Too also performing well and warming the hearts of the old salts racing and ashore watching.

Hopefully we’ll have an even larger contingent next year, as there are a great number of beautiful new and old boats based on old designs, especially wooden ones, which call the Huon/Channel area home.

At the front of the fleet Gretel 2 took out line honours in Saturday’s Hobart to Kettering race and Sunday’s feature race Classics division, as well as recording the fastest elapsed time for the combined fleet in the feature race.

Local pacesetters also performed well, with Lenny Holland’s Flying Scud taking line honours in Saturday’s Kettering to Cygnet race (conducted in difficult light and fluky winds) and Dave O’Neill’s Redback leading the fleet home in division 1 of Sunday’s feature race, after a great battle with Sam Walter’s Melges 24 Sabatage, helmed by world renowned sailor Nick Rogers.

Now that the cold is slowing penetrating the body the requests for Membership are now slowing rapidly with just a few per month. Some previous members have now renewed and the slip is the usual draw. The Member Database is now working well after a few hiccups and members can access their own records for fine tuning or hiding their date of birth. There has been some activity with the Safety boats, dinghies, slip and pontoon maintenance and the Friday “local” is still running … movies may be on later.

During April the MaST Team spent more that 2 hours inspecting boats and moorings in Cygnet (this was flagged as highly likely in email messages). Several boats now have notes attached which indicate what the problem/solution is with that particular location/mooring/vessel. You may also receive information in the mail. Please inspect your vessel now and make sure it and the mooring comply before the follow up inspection and summons arrives.

Any (orphaned) tenders which have not been loved and had the mother vessel name applied (paint and tools etc available from the Bosun) will receive a label requesting that this action be taken or face re-location.

Regatta Sunday saw some close racing in the Pacers. 8 boats on the water, despite the early start and many of the juniors sailing on Saturday and Sunday afternoon as well, was a very good effort. Rory Littlejohn crewed by Saul from Kettering was the overall winner of the 3 races. Well done Rory.

And after the Pacers we squeezed in some colour chaos inshore with the Optimist relay races, and once again everyone had fun, and everyone was the winner.

We have had a huge year with more than 25 children out on the water most Saturdays. The addition of the Optimists to the fleet has added a new dimension allowing the growing numbers of smaller children to sail more independently very early in their sailing experience.

The Pacers are going strong with graduates from Chris Wilson’s adult learn to sail program sometimes joining in. Its always great to see how sailing skills grow over the years and particularly in the last few weeks it’s been good to see so many of our juniors sailing so proficiently and the racing getting closer. Watch out Cobi, Daniel and Imogen there are others close on your tails as evidenced by Rory’s regatta victory!

Saturday 6th April – we had our Annual Drip Beach Sail and BBQ – leaving PCSC 9.30am, arriving Drip Beach 11.00ish and back at PCSC in the afternoon – everyone was made welcome with cake and sausages. Saturday 13th April – we had wind up fun, games and more cake!

A huge thank you from Junior Sailing to 2 generous benefactors who have between them donated 10 new life jackets towards our ‘Update for 2020’ drive. As you probably know Australian Standards for life jackets have changed and PCSC will have to update all its lifejackets by the end of next year. This is quite an undertaking as we need some 30 life jackets to cover all the juniors and volunteers and all their various size requirements.

If you would like to help the learn to sail program and keep our juniors safe, by donating a life jacket please contact me, Alison. 0417438262 or [email protected]

st aYles skiFF rowing

With the warmer days of Summer arriving we had a lot of people out on the water in the skiffs 6 days per week. Still no teams wishing to take a Sunday slot though.

Rowing plans were interrupted in January due to the thick smoke haze from the bush fires across the Huon river with most if not all teams choosing not to exercise in the smoke.

Fortunately the smoke cleared just in time for the Wooden Boat Festival and two teams of 6 rowers had the pleasure (and hard work!) of rowing from Kingston Beach into Hobart to take part in the Parade of Sail. After such a hard slog against the wind, everyone arrived feeling both exhausted but very proud of their efforts and really happy to have taken part in such an event. Hard work by a dedicated few in the lead up meant that both skiffs looked beautiful while on display and were a credit to the club. Luckily the wind gods were a lot kinder for the return row.

Both skiffs were towed directly to Franklin following the WBF where several teams took advantage of them being there to do some rowing in a different area. Both skiffs, ably crewed by Cygnet rowers also participated in the Regatta in Franklin the following Friday.

The new oars for the Cygnet have been well and truly tested by now and in general everyone is happy with them. There will be some minor adjustments made to the diameter of the handles as they are a bit too thick for smaller hands to manage comfortably. Many thanks to everyone involved in both paying for and making them, and in particular to Jeremy for (yet again!) supervising the build.

For the past 2 years our skiffs and crews have participated in the Dover Regatta held on Easter Saturday each year. It’s always a fun day particularly as the Dover Seafest is held nearby. This year was no different... wonderful weather set the scene in good style.

If you think you’d like to give rowing a try, please contact either Adrian (0417634905) or Jan (0409236646) and we’ll do our best to find a place for you.

thursdaY.. . one radio controlled Yacht morning.. .

Model yacht morning... The gods are kind to us again; a nice breeze, sun shining, what more could we ask for.

Well that’s as good as it got.

First rescue – A runaway yacht, its a long row from Deep Bay (well it nearly got there). Now there’s another two yachts tangled together! So another row to Deep Bay!!!

On my return from that rescue another surprise – a head-on collision, Nick and Leanne. They tell me it was like a clap of thunder. Nick is okay but poor Leanne is sinking. We managed to get her boat home to the jetty, but her day was done; a great big hole in the bow, two gallons of water and a very sad Leanne.

Just another Thursday sail rounded off with a great time and a great feed.

See you all next time and anyone else who would like to join the fray.

Those crews who helped operate the Stan Kay throughout the regatta should be recognised for the long hours they spend at sea and the assistance they provide to the racing fleet.

For example, when a boat was towed off the mud at the eastern side of Port Cygnet, there was little appetite for photographs or further publicity for this immaculate timber classic which seemed determined, with full sail set, to make Nichols Rivulet. Fortunately the conditions were ideal, no damage occurred and the crews were only too keen to make their way to the start of the race and forget the whole thing.

On another unusually breezy occasion there was a phone call for engine ignition keys to be ferried to one of the racing fleet which had apparently left them in the car. As one of the larger participants in the regatta, and with the wind now filling in nicely, it was decided that sailing into the crowded anchorage may be unwise. Stan Kay delivered the keys mid race without ceremony such that no officials were aware assistance had been provided.

In both situations the Stan Kay proved to be a capable and comfortable platform.

My special thanks also to those who help maintain the Stan Kay and prepare her for the regatta workout. In particular Steve Ferguson and Gary Pritchard for servicing the engine and keeping fuel tanks full. Also, Simone John who made the starting flags which means the Stan Kay is now capable of starting races.

Greetings all,

keelboat sailtraining and powerboat handling courses now available at pcsc

Our keelboat sailtraining courses are in demand now, and the third course commenced in April. These 12 hour courses can develop basic skills in new sailors or develop these skills already attained by sailors with some experience. Based on the proven Australian Sailing (AS) curriculum, they concentrate on developing a keen awareness of safety on the water, understanding how to access weather forecasts, boating terminology, basic knots, and rigging a sailing boat, and understanding the magic of sailing - using the wind to power a boat. Docking, anchoring, tacking and gybing are all covered in the introductory courses and for those for some experience and understanding we can develop these skills further. More information can be gained form our website www.cygnetsailing.org.au

We have run our first powerboat handling course with four students, all of whom are parents of our junior dinghy sailors, and who wish to be safety boat drivers during the junior sailing activities on Saturday mornings.

This Australian Sailing certificate is a pre-requisite for anyone wanting to volunteer as a safety boat driver during Australian Sailing sailtraining courses, and is also a prerequisite for an AS instructor qualification. Designed to complement the basic motor boat licence qualification - a MAST BoatSafe licence (required for anyone driving a powerboat with a minimum of a 4hp motor). It goes into more detail in navigation, high and low speed operation, and especially in operating safely around people in the water. It also covers trailering boats and emphasises safety on the water.

We are working towards delivering the MAST BoatSafe licence as well as the AS powerboat handling course, and hope to be able to announce this in the near future.

discover sailing experiences

These 4 hour sailing experiences are designed to give people a good introduction to being on a sailing boat. Can be delivered in our Soling or Etchells, or by arrangement on a Farrier trimaran. The trim can cover a good deal of distance in this time and in some comfort too. Importantly it has a porta potti, not to mention a galley.

The last excellent VHF Course was very successful with all participants passing the practical and written mutiple choice examination with SRCOP cards now received !!

This is being run again on Wednesday 8th and 15th of May starting at 18:00 and taking a few hours each evening. At the moment there are only a few places left so please go on the PCSC Website urgently and sign up for this course. We are not sure when the next course will be run. This Certificate is obligatory for one person per vessel as responsible operator but better if there are more trained and certified. This is also necessary if you want to use DSC or get an official MMSI number for the VHF unit.

Chris Wilson (and Gary)

The sailing club has a number of boats available for hire; 9 Pacers and 4 Optimist dinghies, an Etchells and a Soling, both open cockpit keelboats for sail training and racing. The Pacers can also be hired for the frequent dinghy races that usually start 30 minutes after the keelboats on Sundays.

While sail training is the priority, these boats can be hired to sail in club races. Both keelboats have been prepared for this season with new antifouling and all gear checked.

If anyone is interested, please contact me, Chris Wilson 0488 978 338.

Hopefully you will never have to hear or speak these words but if you do then you need to heed the warning of MaST below about your registration or lack thereof with AMSA.

epirB registration

it is a legal requirement for all ePiRBs to be registered with AMSA. Registrations have dropped by 24.16% in 12 months.

This is a concerning safety issue.
