Guest Editorial On Coursefor the Future: The ENA FoundationEndowment Campaign Vicky Bradley, RN, MS, CEN, Lexington, Kentucky W ' hat course will nursing take in the future? Will nurses define the positive impact of nursing care on patient outcomes, or will nursing practice be- come nebulous and unrecognizable? Will we be able to demonstrate that patients without nurses will not do as well as patients with nurses? Others are directing the course of nursing's future by actively positioning themselves to become major players in health care. They are challenging the old medical system and looking for ways to provide cost-efficient care that may or may not include nurses. What should nurses be doing? The ENA Founda- tion believes there are three initiatives that will put emergency nurses on course for the future: outcomes research, leadership development, and prevention projects. Outcomes research Nurses have traditionally shied away from research. Research may be included in our job descriptions, but it is a low priority. It should be our No. 1 priority. Ev- ery nurse should be involved in research. Research should become so ingrained in our everyday practice that we cannot imagine nursing without it. Only with research will we be able to support our belief that nursing care makes a difference. Health care strategies and practices must be tested to determine which measures make a differ- ence in improving patient outcomes. Research, not custom or the search for profit, must determine nurs- ing practice. Leadership development A second course the Foundation recommends for the future is education. Changing from a practice based primarily on custom and the medical model to a prac- tice based on nursing research will not be easy.
