President’s Corner

Dear Colleagues,

As we begin our final months of the teaching year, I am reminded of the many hours all of you dedicate to your students, your profession and to OMTA. There are so many to thank for the success of such things as the State Junior Bach Festival Fi-nal Event, our Spring Syllabus program, the State Composition Celebration, the Level X syllabus Recitals and all District events and festivals. The Association remains vibrant and creative.

There are many back-stage contribu-tors, as well. Our State Executive Board held their annual spring meeting February 25 and it was well attended by those who volunteer their time and talent. At these meetings, the state of the Association is presented through reports of our vari-ous board members and officers. There is also discussion of many suggestions and concerns brought to us by the members. At this time, the state of the Association is healthy and active. We do appreciate all input we receive and act on it with care and consideration.

As my term draws to a close, there will be openings for state board positions. These positions are appointed by the State President and offer a unique opportu-nity for our members to be involved in the progress and implementation of the OMTA mission.

Our President Elect, Dr. Bonnie Es-bensen, and I are asking that if you might be interested in serving on the board to please contact one of us. There are so many “gems” out there among our mem-bership that we might not know of and we would like to tap that talent to bring your skills and ideas to the forum. If you are interested or would like more information, we’d like to hear from you, and thank you for considering this request.

Best wishes for all your upcoming endeavors.

Warm regards,Fern L. McArthur, NCTMPresident, OMTA

Kathy GaultCorrespondent

Greetings from Central Oregon, where it is spring one day and back to winter the next (probably until June)! Meanwhile, we teach and learn from each other, having a lot of fun in the process. Our March program was a group presentation/participation on favorite teaching games. April promises more group participation, as Larry Rauch presents some of the concepts described in his recent Oregon Musician article: “Suc-cessful Jazz Band Performances for the Classical Pianist.”

One of the nice things about being a small district is being able to meet in the homes of various members. Our March meeting was held in a beautiful log home east of town, surrounded by pastures, a pond and the austere beauty of the winter-time desert. Since we have been starting each meeting with live music, we have been treated to a wide variety of repertoire, as well as instrumentation.

Greetings from the Tualatin Valley District! This year has been a busy yet productive and rewarding one so far. We would love to give you a sampling of what has been going on in our district throughout this teach-ing year. A few months ago, our district sponsored a multi-media recital entitled “Encounters with Beethoven” given by Dr. Kenneth Willson from George Fox Univer-sity. The event was made possible by grants from the MTNA and Nellie Tholen funds. We were thrilled with the turnout of 237

people at this exciting performance! A good share of the audience was young children through college-age students who were delighted with Dr. Willson’s multi-media performance which even included a Tom and Jerry cartoon paired with the perfor-mance of one Beethoven selection. We were happy to see several teachers from other districts who were able to come enjoy the event as well.

Marandas that meets once a month to per-form for each other. Several times a year, the group performs at a local retirement center. These pictures were taken at the performance in the retirement center.

The program following our April business meeting will be given by Carolyn Mayer, NCTM, from Pendleton, OR. “Ex-ploring Mozart’s Second Skin” will be an exciting look into the fashion of Mozart’s

time, giving us a unique glance into aspects of culture of his time. Carolyn will display genuine 18th century clothing pieces on loan from her son, who is a professor of costume history at Syracuse University. We welcome any interested teachers to join us for this unique program. It will take place Friday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Tigard Christian Church located at 13405 SW Hall Blvd, Tigard, OR, 97223.

PIANO SYLLABUS with Virginia Hawley BuhnA Professional Course of Study on DVD

The OMTA Piano Syllabus is an outline of study de-signed to provide students with a thorough background in keyboard skills, musical understanding and perfor-mance ability. The DVDs offer ideas and methods for implementing the syllabus as a basis for learning and performance.

The original VCRs were developed by Virginia Buhn in 1996 and have sold more than 1,200 copies. The new DVDs follow the course outline of the OMTA Syllabus Book and are designed to help piano teachers prepare students for a successful evaluation.

JAZZ PIANO SYLLABUS with Gary RuppertA Professional Course of Study on DVD

The OMTA Jazz Piano Syllabus was developed by Gary Ruppert in the mid 1980s. A revision, done in the summer of 2003, was based on feedback received from teachers, students, and adjudicators who used the first version. Their comments and encouragement have been of inestimable value

This DVD is meant to help teachers and their stu-dents navigate the various levels of the Jazz Syllabus and discover the joys of studying jazz piano.
