Dussehra (Vijaya Dashami, Dasara, or Dashain) is a Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is a festival which signifies the victory of Lord Rama over Demon King Ravana, Goddess Durga over Demon Mahishasura.

What is Dussehra?

It falls on the 10th day ( Dashami) of the month of the month of Ashwin on the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a gazetted holiday in India.

Dussehra is celebrated by Hindus all over the world.

Why is Dussehra celebrated ?

Dussehra celebrates the Hindu God Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana and the triumph of good over evil. The epic Ramayana tells the story of the Lord Rama who wins the lovely Sita from Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. Together with his brother Lakshman and a troupe of monkeys led by his devotee Hanuman, he got into a war with Ravana which lasted for nine days and victoriously defeated the ten-headed demon king on the tenth day.

This day came to be known as Vijaydashmi or Dussehra (meaning victory attained on the tenth day).

Story 1

In another mythology which is prevalent in the eastern and northern states of India, Goddess Durga kills the demon Mahishasura to bring peace to Earth. The festival of Navratri is celebrated because here also the battle between the Goddess and the demon spans ten days.
