Happy New Year, Kung Hee Fat Choy, and Happy Valentines Day to everyone…

OLRW PACA motion was made at our December luncheon to include the full Board of Di-rectors, the Chairs of the Standing Committees and the immediate past president to become the PAC officers for 2008. It was seconded, discussed and passed by unanimous consent. Since that meeting, Julie Lee, our first vice-president, has asked to withdraw from being a PAC officer because of a possible conflict of interest.

ResignationLaura Millman has resigned as Parliamentarian and we thank her for her partici-pation at our 2007 Board meetings.

Welcome BackOur OLRW recording secretary, Gail Dukes, returned at our December Board meeting and we welcome her back and hope she stays healthy in 2008.

Thought For The DayAnne Sutton has volunteered to provide our “Thought for the Day” at our monthly luncheon meetings. She and Juanita were good friends and it feels so good having Anne carry on.

WelcomeA big welcome to our first new members for 2008 - Pat Lohr and Ione Gumpfer. They both came out and helped with a mailing on December 18 and joined our League.

In Memoriam For 2007Helen Gascon, Beatrice Munive, Kitty Holloway, Maria Hustace, Dorothy Dar-row, Charles Marsland, Juanita Schiltz and Kit McCready.

Kahala Motoyama was injured in a pedestrian acci-dent in October. She was in a marked crosswalk with the green light in her favor when she was hit, breaking a leg and suffering a concussion. She was still in pain and unable to attend our Christmas luncheon. We wish her well and hope to see her in 2008.

December Luncheon Meeting Highlights

Our Christmas holiday started with a bang at our December luncheon at Oahu Country Club. The setting was truly lovely. We had a large turnout, a great lunch, prizes for everyone, and caroling led by Julie Lee and Adrienne King. Thanks to Roberta Chong Kee and Gwen Honjo for coordinating the fund-raising event. We raised $634.50 at our Christmas sale which will go to our PAC fund. A big MAHALO to Jeannine Sills and Julie Lee for coordinating the luncheon and entertainment.

Condolences To The Family Of Georgia MillerWhile government agencies and developers planned for Waikiki as a tourist mecca, Georgia Miller never let them forget it is also a neighborhood for thousands of residents. As a mem-ber of the Waikiki Neighborhood Board for more than 25 years and president of the Waikiki

Residents Association, Miller represented the residents’ concerns at numerous public hearings of the City Council and state legislative committees. She was honored as an outstanding volunteer with the Governor’s Kilohana Award in 1996. Miller, 95, died Thursday in Kuakini Medical Center of injuries from a recent fall. “It wasn’t just the larger issues of zoning and development; she was informed about every little thing to do with life in Waikiki,” said Marilyn Bornhorst, former City Council chairwoman. “At one time there was a vacant lot on Kuhio Avenue that was left trashed. She saw to it that the city took it over, planted grass and made a minipark. “She was quite articulate and rational about everything,” Bornhorst said. “She was persistent but she was always ladylike. She knew what she was talking about.” A November 1999 City Council resolution recognized Miller as a participant in discussions on building the Hawaii Convention Center and creating a Waikiki Special Design District. An accom-plishment she was proud of was preservation of the historic Winstedt House at the edge of Kapiolani Park; it is now a community meeting place called Paki Hale. Miller’s career as a community activist was launched in 1978 with her election to the Hawaii Constitutional Convention. She was also a member of the Waikiki Improvement Association and the Waikiki Business and Professional Women. She retired in 1974 after 27 years as a typing teacher at Punahou School. She is survived by nine nieces and nephews.
