TOWNSHIPS By Ann Hutteman

The township is one of those terms whlch came to America from England, where it is an ancient unit of administration identical in area with or a division of a church parish. In some northeastern states, the township is a temtorial area having the status of a unit of local government, often having a chief administrator. Usually, they have fewer functions and powers than a New England town. In some western states, such as in Wyoming, the township geographical division is the same as our counties.

fistorically in North Carolina, townships were formerly very important, either in the political process or for census data. Today, according to the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill, they are used in name only and are no longer the preferred statistical boundary as they were in the past. Thls is due largely because of the huge influx of people from rural sections into the urban areas of the state.

The Federal Census, from the first one in 1790, were taken along township lines. If you are looking for a particular entry in that census or in subsequent ones, it will facilitate your research if you know the township where the family or person lived.

Also in our state, townships have been used for electoral purposes, as a way of designating voting precincts. Today in New Hanover County, we still name precincts after the townships, but the boundaries are no longer the same. The annexation process of the city of Wilmington more than any other factor has changed the lines of the particular voting areas.

In New Hanover County, we have five townships. Beginning in the northern part of the county, they are: Cape Fear, Harnett, Wilmington, Masonboro and Federal Point which have been the township names for more than two centuries.

Pender County was a part of New Hanover until 1875, when it was partitioned to form a separate county. In 1869, the area which was to become Pender County had the following townships: Grant, Holden, Lincoln, Caswell, Columbia, Franklin, Union and Holly. By 1880, the township names of Franklin, Grant,

C Holden and Lincoln were changed and the boundaries were redrawn. The current townships are: Canetuck, Caswell, Grady, Long Creek, Rocky Point, Topsail, Holly, Burgaw, Columbia and Union

LOCAL HISTORY ROOM NOTES:

For over a year, the North Carolina Room at the New Hanover County Public Library has been in a chaotic state of renovation. The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be in sight! In the near h r e , books and records will be moved from the basement onto the brand new shelves. Books, microfilm readers, copier, printers will be placed in the newly expanded room. If you are planning a research trip to the library from out of town, it may be prudent to call (910) 341-4394 before you come.

Two new additions to the library catalogue may be highly beneficial to New Hanover County researchers. One is Abstracts of Deeds, New Hanover County, N. C.: Boob C, D & E, abstracted by Dr. A. B. Pruitt. Dr. Pruitt is an authority on North Carolina land records, having published a highly acclaimed series covering many counties in the state. We are delighted that he has chosen to include New Hanover County in hls recent works.

The second is by UNC-W history professor, Alan D. Watson. HIS new book, Wilmington, North Carolina, to 1861, presents the social, political and economic history of antebellum Wilrnington. The volume should be of particular interest to 1 8 ~ century researchers who wish to find out what was happening in the town and how it was governed during this period. Also, Dr. Watson paints a vivid picture of life in the first half of the l!Yh century.

3 In consideration of the high price of medicines, and in fact, of every product of the country, the Physicians of Sampson county find it necessary to increase their original rate of charges. They would respectfully appeal to all, to pay cash at least for medicines and prescriptions, and a settlement of their accounts every six months. It is impossible to practice medicine at this time successfblly without money to buy the necessary articles. The following are the rates proposed: Mileage, one dollar per mile, Prescription, one dollar, and an advance upon medicines that shall cover the cost of their estimated value. H. A. Brizzell, J. .C. ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH Wilmington, NC

Transcribed by James Edwards

[In 1858, the Rt. Rev. Thomas Atkinson, Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, with the cooperation of a few earnest people, purchased the Methodist church at the comer of South Fourth and Orange streets with the understanding that the sittings should all be free. The plan was that it should forever be a free church for a mixed congregation. On June 5, 1858, a new parish was organized under the name of St. Paul. ONE LAST WORD ... UNEARTHED A SKELETON

Queer Find by Women at Third and Nun Streets on Friday

While excavating under the residence of the Meares home, recently purchased by Mr. A B Skelding, at Thud and Nun streets day before yesterday, workmen unearthed a skeleton, the findmg of which has caused no end of speculation in the neighborhood. Whlle numerous skeletons have been exhumed in different parts of the city within the past few years, the finding of this one under a house of

i very early construction has caused considerable speculation. The skeleton seems to have been buried face 1 downward, full length under the house and where excavations were being made for the installation of a I furnace. The skeleton was taken out of the ground almost intact and has been viewed by a number of

4 persons including a physician who has under taken the task of determining to what age the form of the man

I or woman belonged. As yet there has been no defhte conclusion reached. The bones are probably those I of some very early English setter here or some Indian of primeval times. F ' ! i - The Mornlng Star, Wilmington, NC, 8 Sept 1907, p. 7
