Resident Council
Residents are encouraged to attend the Resident Council monthly meetings
held in the Multi-purpose room, as they are informative and beneficial to all.
1st Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m.
UPCOMING NOTICE OF RESIDENT RIGHTS AND VOTING
October will be Resident Rights Month and we will be having a guest
speaker from Department of Human Services to discuss and educate
us on how we can all ensure residents are treated with dignity, respect,
and provided choices in their care. This will occur in coordination
with Resident Council which will be held on October 5, 2016 at
10:30am in the Multi-Purpose Room. We will also be following up on
any last minute voter registrations as the deadline is October 11.
Election Day will be November 8 and a trip to the local Polls will be
arranged by our Activities Department for those who are capable and
will not be voting by absentee ballot. We would like to invite all resi-
dents and family members to attend and participate. Light refresh-
ments will be provided. Hope to see you all there!!
Sincerely, Social Services
Founder of Labor Day
More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the Ameri-can Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we be-hold."
But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchal-lenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Un-ion in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstra-tion and picnic.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a
creation of the labor movement and is dedicat-
ed to the social and economic achievements of
American workers. It constitutes a yearly na-
tional tribute to the contributions workers have
made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being
of our country.
BOAT CRUISE
Many of our Veterans attended the Annual Sharing and Caring Inc. Boat Cruise
with the Gateway Clipper Fleet on September 6th, 2016. Our Veterans en-
joyed the 31st Annual Boat Cruise and look forward to this event each year.
The day was filled with great weather and great food. Thank you to the many
dedicated volunteers and family members that assisted our Veterans and staff
throughout the day. Our facility and Veterans would like to thank Sharing &
Caring for another great Boat Cruise!

PITT STUDENTS LEND A HELPING HAND
On Friday, August 26th, students from the University of Pittsburgh volunteered and spent time with the resident veterans at the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Southwestern Veterans Center. The students did room to room visits and gave the resi-dent veterans “Thank You For Your Service To Country” cards. (See picture on next page)
Saturday, August 6th was the 3rd
Annual softball game –
fundraiser for the resident veterans. The weather was beau-
tiful and we had a fun and friendly game of softball. Of
course, SWVC won the game. Below are a few pictures of
the players.
The University of Pittsburgh ROTC and students came to visit the resident veterans to thank them for their service as well as remembering the innocent victims of 9/11. The veteran in the picture with us is Arley Cunningham (US Navy). The resident veterans were listening to music that day in the multi-purpose room which is why you see the light bouncing off of our faces. ( See pictures below and on following page)
Shop In Heaven’s Grocery Store
I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago,
One day I saw a sign that read heaven’s Grocery Store.
As I got a little closer, the door came open wide,
And when I came to myself, I was standing inside.
I saw a host of angels; they were standing everywhere.
And one angel said, “My child shop with care.”
Everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store.
And all you couldn’t carry you could come back the next day for
more.
First, I got some patience, love was in the same row.
Further down was understanding, you need that everywhere you
go.
I got a box or two of wisdom, a bag or two of faith.
I just couldn’t miss the Holy ghost for He was all over the place.
I stopped to get some strength and courage to help me run the
race.
By then my basket was getting full, but I remembered I needed
some grace.
I didn’t forget salvation, for salvation that was free.
So, I tried to get enough of that to save you and me.
Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill.
For I thought I had everything to do my Master’s will.
As I went up the aisle, I saw prayer and just had to put that in.
For I knew when I stepped outside, I would run right into sin.
Peace and joy were plentiful, they were on the last shelf.
Song and praises were hanging near so I just helped myself.
Then, I said now how much do I owe?
He just smiled and said, just take them everywhere you go.
How much do I really owe?
He smiled and said, my child, jesus paid your bill a long time ago.
