Greetings!

We are pleased to provide class offerings for the 4th quarter, 2015. As many

of you remember, we used to print a course catalog every quarter. We will be

providing this catalog quarterly in the future. It will go out by email blast and

a link will be available on our website.

This catalog covers courses available from October 1, 2015 through

December 31, 2015. The courses which are currently scheduled are listed,

however, keep in mind that additional courses may be added which will not be

listed. Also, some classes may be rescheduled. Please continue to check our

website for additions or revisions to course offerings.

OSU-FST does our best to provide high quality professional development

opportunities to the Emergency Responders of Oklahoma in a cost-effective,

Call Oklahoma State University – Fire Service Training (OSU-FST) at 1-800-304-5727 to register for a class. Preregistration is required for all Fire Service Training classes. Registration will begin 90 days prior to the class start date. You may preregister earlier than 90 days for all NFA classes. All registration fee amounts quoted throughout this brochure are for Oklahoma emergency responders. If you need information on out-of-state, industrial, or government costs, please call the OSU-FST office at 1-800-304-5727 or visit the FST website at www.osufst.org.

Cancellation Policy All OSU-FST classes have a minimum number of students required to hold the class. These numbers vary with the individual classes due to safety considerations, activities, and efficient and economical use of resources.

The student or organization representative that has registered a student for an OSU-FST course must notify OSU-FST at least five (5) business days prior to the start of the course, that the student will not attend the course, to avoid being billed.

The student or organization representative who registered the student will be issued a “cancellation” number when canceling the student out of the course.

Classes that do not have a registration fee – The student or organization representative who placed the registration will be billed a $15.00 administrative fee if the student fails to attend the class he/she is registered for, and has not obtained a cancellation number at least five (5) business days prior to the start of the course.

Classes that have a registration fee – The student or organization representative who registered the student will be billed the full registration fee if the student fails to attend the class he/she is registered for, and has not obtained a cancellation number at least five (5) business days prior to the start of the course.

Oklahoma Executive Fire Officer Leadership Program Length: 120 hours

Outline: The Oklahoma Executive Fire Officer Leadership Program is a partnership between

Oklahoma State University – Fire Service Training, Oklahoma State University Fire and Emergency Management Administration, Oklahoma Fire Chiefs Association, Oklahoma State Firefighters Association, and the Council on Firefighter Training. The 160 hour program utilizes the curriculum from the International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Institute and has been developed to bring the concepts of leadership and ethics to the forefront of an individual’s career. Topics include: Developing a Personal Philosophy of Leadership and Ethics, Leading Others Ethically, Ethical Leadership in Organizations, Ethics and the Challenge of Leadership.

10 years in the fire service

3 years as an officer

Active Shooter Response: Medical Rescue Teams

Length: 2 hours

Outline: The simple common sense approach takes from various models and specifically focuses on

integrating the law enforcement/fire/EMS response. The focus is on saving as many lives as possible which means getting aid to the wounded as fast as possible. This model does not attempt to make firefighters and paramedics into law enforcement tactical team members. This response is designed to allow fire and EMS personnel to work in a reasonably safe environment and focus on what they already do best, saving lives.

Advanced Fire Behavior

Length: 8 hours

Outline: Discussion and observation in an 8 hour

course which teaches firefighters to recognize the signs leading to FLASHOVER. Allows firefighters in a live fire laboratory to observe the phases of fire and the process of pyrolysis. Provide firefighters with nozzle techniques, to possibly give them time prior to flashover to: Escape, Affect a rescue, Find the seat of the fire, Perform vertical ventilation.

Driver Operator – Pumper

Length: 40 hours

Outline: This 5-day course is designed to prepare experienced instructors to deliver driver/operator

pumper course which prepares the students for a certification process. Topics addressed in the course include general principles and theory of pump operation, safe driving techniques, types of pumping apparatus, positioning of apparatus, hydraulic calculations, water supply considerations, apparatus maintenance and practical pump operation at fire scenes.

Exterior Offensive Fire Attack/ Structural Fire Scene Size-up

Length: 8 hours

Outline: This course addresses the exterior offensive fire attack strategy. Students will consider the

advantages and limitations of this strategy; the impact of exterior fire attacks on fire behavior; and ventilation methods and fire streams which are used with exterior offensive attacks; the course uses small group activities where students evaluate a fire scenario, determine if an exterior offensive fire attack is feasible, and then develop a strategy for making that attack.

Fire Officer I

Length: 48 hours

Outline: In this 48 hour class, 40 hours of instruction and 8 hours of testing and evaluation, Fire

Officer I provides the student with the basic skills and knowledge to effectively perform the duties of a company officer, or an acting company officer, in most municipal fire departments.

Outline: Features essential knowledge and skills for handling flammable gas incidents in

transportation or at fixed facilities. The 12-hour training includes eight hours of classroom, followed by four hours of live burn instruction. The course is recommended to emergency responders in public safety and industry. This will include Live Burn Evaluation.

Outline: This course will provide responders with clues to alert emergency responders that gang

members are on scene. It will also provide information about which gangs are operating both within the state and your region. This course is CLEET accredited.

Grain Bin Emergencies Awareness

Length: 4 hours

Outline: The course provides the student with an understanding of the common hazards that exist

during grain bin operations, the actions that reduce or eliminate these hazards, and the initial action that should be taken in the event of an accident at a grain handling facility. The class is designed for a four (4) hour delivery.

Hazardous Materials Operations: Core Competencies Train-the-Trainer

Length: 8 hours

Outline: This one day T-t-T provides instructors with the information they need to deliver the HMO:

Core Competencies course. The curriculum for HMO: Core Competencies is designed to meeting the requirements of NFPA 472, Chapters 5 (Core Competencies for Operations Level Responders)and 6.2 (Mission-Specific Competencies: Personal Protective Equipment), 2013 edition. The basic course provides skill development necessary to safely and effectively respond to incidents involving hazardous substances in a defensive manner and the use of PPE.

Hazardous Materials Operations Refresher: Core Competencies Train-the-Trainer

Length: 8 hours

Outline: Hazardous Materials First Responders at the Operation Level are required to retrain or

demonstrate competency in their assigned job duties at least annually. This course is designed to meet or exceed the minimum annual refresher requirements while providing specific focus on responder core competencies. The content focuses on the largest transport provider of hazardous materials in the U.S., our nation’s pipeline system. While pipeline emergencies are relatively rare, they can pose great risk to the public and emergency responders if they aren’t managed appropriately. Through simulated hazardous material emergencies, students will learn to analyze the incident, plan a response for the conditions present, implement their planned response, and evaluate the effectiveness of their plan.

Leadership for Small Departments: Administration

Length: 8 hours

Outline: This course covers basic administration information required for the chief personnel in small

fire departments. It is intended to supply basic information to these new chief personnel to keep themselves and their personnel safe until, and when, they can attend other tactical and leadership courses to expand this knowledge base. It is also intended to supply needed administrative information to these chief personnel to insure they meet all the basic legal and administrative requirements of heading up a small fire department.

Leadership for Small Departments: Tactics

Length: 8 hours

Outline: This course is designed to provide information to the new small department chief that will

allow him or her to make sound tactical decisions during an incident. These concepts are basic in nature and are offered in an effort to keep all members of the fire department safe under the direction of the small department chief. It is recommended that the chief attend multiple course offerings on fire tactics following the completion of this course to attain a more well-rounded understanding of fire tactics and fire behavior and how to keep the firefighters under his or her command safe during incident operations.

Outline: Prepares the provider to assess Opioid overdose and treatment for it. This course will give

the instructor the information so he/she can teach responders in their area or their department how to deliver Nasal Narcan.

Outline: Covers technology in modern vehicles today, such as airbags, seatbelts, rollover protection

systems, hybrids, ect. This course is designed for classroom delivery with PowerPoint and videos and is 8 hours in length.

Length: 16 hours

Outline: This 2 day course examines the Safety Officer’s role at emergency responses. A specific

focus on operations within ICS as a Safety Officer is a main theme. Response to all-hazards types of situations will be emphasized. This course is ideal for individuals who have Safety Officer responsibility at emergency operations.

NFA Introduction to Unified Command for All Hazard Incidents

Length: 16 hours

Outline: This course is designed for those officers who would likely function in a Command or General

Staff position during a multi-agency, all-hazard operation. Students will be exposed to lectures and activities designed to promote a better understanding of multi-agency needs and a Unified Command structure. This course is designed to provide an understanding of the requirements of a Unified Command organization and the skills necessary to operate effectively at complex all-hazard incidents.

Outline: This 2-day course identifies operational activities and safety concerns for structural company

officers assigned to a Wildland/Wildland Urban Interface incident. Topics covered include Introduction to Wildland/Wildland Urban Interface firefighting, interface environment, wildland fire behavior, command and control issues of wildland/urban interface firefighting, and tactics. Company officers or chief officers who may be in command of a single resource or Strike Team at the scene of a Wildland/Wildland Urban Interface incident.

Outline: Rope Rescue Technician Level I is designed to meet the JPRs set in NFPA 1006, 2013

edition Chapter 6.1. This course emphasizes the importance of anchor placement and strength as well and proper rigging in order to be safe and efficient. Skills covered are: knots, anchors, belay operations, ascending and descending a fixed rope, mechanical advantage, and raising and lowering systems.

Wilderness Rescue Technician Level I

Outline: This is a 2 1/2 day course 32 hours of instruction. The course prepares the student to

operate at a lost person incident in a wilderness environment. Wilderness Rescue Technician level one builds on the navigation skills that are learned during the course with practical skills applications in the field as well as night operations. Participants will be required to build their own base camp while also attempting to find a lost person. The course requires an overnight operation for successful completion.

Wildland Incident Commander’s Toolbox

Outline: Have you ever found yourself in the Front Seat of a Brush Truck of a rapidly expanding

incident and asked yourself what do I do next? Do I stay in the Brush Truck or Do I set up Command. This course is designed to assist you through that decision making process. This class is designed to assist the student through the first couple of hours a Wildland Incident. This class is not your typical NIMS/ICS course.
