Professional Development Day

What makes our professionals stand apart from others in the

field of early childhood? Our staff has the educational foundation, hands-on experiences and partnerships with families that provide groundwork for a successful program.

Our staff is striving to be current on learning state of the art trends and discoveries that help maintain high quality

education.

One Hope United prides itself on providing a continuum of education by providing learning opportunities designed to

prepare individuals for working with young children and their

families. On October 14th

, Des Plaines Child Development Center hosted Professional Development Day. Many of the workshops focused on opportunities that would lend

themselves to lead teachers to improve knowledge base, enhance sills, and develop new and innovative practices to

implement into their classroom curriculum. Presenters came from the Art Institute, Erikson University and local school districts to educate teachers on the best practices while working with young children focusing on ages birth through

Kindergarten.

One of the greatest benefits of hosting professional development day is giving staff the opportunity to network with other early childhood professionals and share stories,

swap ideas, brainstorm and help one another out. The informal learning experience can be extremely beneficial in

helping teachers know that they are supported and understood by others.

Teachable Moments Within

the Classroom

Developing fine motor skills necessary for cutting and early writing skills.

What Is School Readiness?

NAEYC answers that question.

"School readiness involves more than just children. School

readiness, in the broadest sense, is about children, families, early environments, schools, and communities. Children are

not innately 'ready' or 'not ready' for school. Their skills and development are strongly influenced by their families and

through their interactions with other people and environments before coming to school."

Through the Kindergarten readiness workshop at OHU-CDC's Professional Development Day, teachers became more

aware of the Illinois Learning Standards also known as the Common Core State Standards. Kindergarten teachers

recommend children be familiar with some of the following:

• ABC in order (can be sung)• knowledge of letters and their sounds

• recognition of letters: upper and lower• identify and write numbers 0 through 20• count to 100 verbally• identify colors and shapes

• spell and identify name(first and last) • Can they play with other children?

• express their needs verbally• Can they sit still for 15 to 20 min?• can they take care of basic needs on their own such

as washing• knowledge of a book and its use ( holding it correctly,

turn the pages)• cutting lines: straight, curves or zigzag

• use of expressive and receptive language • rhyme , units of sounds

This workshop gave our preschool and kindergarten teachers an opportunity to discuss some of the most important

readiness skills included in the classroom curriculum, which will be used to prepare students for the next year. Comparing

these skills to our Teaching Strategies Gold developmental

objectives, our current form of assessing children and their

development, we were happy to see that many of these skills are the same as what we have been working on in our

classrooms. We were intrigued to learn kindergarten teachers stress the

importance of incoming students knowing letter sounds or phonemes. They feel this is even more important than the letter names. In the preschool classroom, we have observed

that many children who have a good grasp of letter names are just beginning to learn the letter sounds. In our classrooms,

we have begun embedding daily activities that will help the children learn the sounds at the same time they are learning the letters. We have added a daily report to our morning calendar

routine. As we list the day, date, number of children and the weather we talk about the sounds of the letters. For example,

if today is Monday (MMM), what else starts with this sound? The children will say someone's name or another word that starts with the M sound. Also, when we use the

name cards for our inside choices, we talk about the sound of the letters that begin the name. For example, this name starts

with the MMM sound. Whose name is it? Although we are mostly working with initial letter sounds of words, as the

children are ready we will begin working on ending sounds and sounds in the middle of words.

Congratulations!

family. Afterwards, she went to work at a

preschool for five years.

Happily, circumstances have brought her back here to work with this fine staff. She is

passionate about children in early education. She believes it is crucial that we help children develop positive self-esteem and a love for

learning and exploration. Some of her favorite things are food, family, friends, and being

outdoors. Please help us in welcoming KC back to Des Plaines Child Development Center!
