September is a wonderful time in Spain, since the extreme heat of the summer has died down, but there is still plenty of opportunity to enjoy life outdoors.

Exteriores Mágicos Cuando la empresa Estomar91 fue contratada para renovar una masía catalana del siglo XVIII, era evidente que tendrían que realizarse algunos cambios importantes a la propiedad. Se llevaron a cabo alteraciones estructurales y la decoración se modificó sustancialmente, y los expertos en frescos de Mariani Affreschi vinieron desde Brescia, Italia, para añadir algunos toques únicos a las paredes.
La misma atención al detalle se prodigó en el exterior del edificio, incluyendo terrazas adornadas y jardines inmaculados, que en conjunto proporcionan el escenario ideal para disfrutar del clima mediterráneo y vida al aire libre todo el año.

Magical ExteriorsWhen Estomar91 was contracted to renovate an 18th century Catalunyan country house (masia) it was obvious that some major changes would have to be made to the interior of the property. Structural modifications were undertaken and the décor was substantially altered, plus fresco experts Mariani Affreschi were called in from Brescia, Italy, to add a few unique touches to the walls.
The same attention to detail was lavished on the exterior of the building, including the ornate terraces and immaculate gardens, which together provide the ideal setting in which to enjoy the temperate Spanish climate and all year round outdoor living.
One of the property’s most attractive features is the extensive terracing, located both on the upper and ground floors, which highlights some very beautiful decorative ironwork commissioned specifically for this project by Estomar91. The theme is continued in the garden furniture, developed exclusively for this project by Vittorio Grifoni and a team of master craftsmen, adding a sense of Italian style, whilst fitting in perfectly with the property’s historical façade. The garden furniture is manufactured from solid wrought iron, ensuring elegance, quality and durability which can be enjoyed by present and future residents of this grand country house. Once a project is accepted, Estomar91 likes to work with a variety of international professionals that will be best placed to add bespoke quality to a project.Throughout this project Estomar91 worked closely with the owners, designers and craftsman to ensure that all requirements were addressed, to deliver a unique, stylish and sympathetic property in keeping with its rustic Spanish surroundings.

Pasamos aproximadamente un tercio de cada día en nuestros dormitorios. Por eso es muy importante elegir el entorno adecuado para revitalizar esta parte de nuestra vida.
Teri García, Maestra de Feng Shui, confirma que el dormitorio debe ser un refugio de tranquilidad y que hay muchas cosas que se pueden hacer para maximizar su eficiencia como espacio tranquilo y pacífico.
“Uno de los aspectos más importantes es asegurar que la cama no está colocada
cerca de una pared que contenga cables de alta tensión. Muchos edificios de apartamentos incluyen el cableado de los ascensores y la peor posición de la cama sería colocando el cabecero contra una pared que está cargada con electricidad.”
El color también desempeña un papel importante en el diseño del dormitorio ideal y por eso Teri nos da un consejo a la hora de decorarlo: “La decoración debe ser sobre todo tranquila, sin diseños muy recargados o colores fuertes. La buena noticia para los padres con bebés y niños que no duermen bien es que el Feng Shui se puede utilizar para revertir esta situación. As the stresses of modern living become more intense, it is more important than ever to ensure that the spaces in our home on which we rely to provide relaxation, can do just that.
We spend approximately a third of every day in our bedroom, so the importance of choosing exactly the right surroundings for this revitalising part of our day cannot be overemphasised.
Teri Garcia, feng shui expert confirms that the bedroom should be a haven of tranquillity and that there are many things that can be done to maximise its efficiency as a calm and peaceful space.
“One of the most important things is to ensure that the bed is not placed near a
wall that contains high voltage cables. Many apartment buildings include cabling for the lifts and the worst position for a bed would be to place it with the headboard against a wall that is humming with electricity.”
Colour also plays an important role in the design of the ideal bedroom and here too Teri has advice for would be interior designers: “The décor should above all be calm – no busy designs or loud colours. The good news for parents with babies and children who are poor sleepers is that feng shui can be used to turn this situation around. It is a fact that the better a bedroom’s feng shui, the more likely it is that the inhabitant will experience an excellent night’s sleep.”

Las personas toleran las temperaturas de forma diferente; algunos juran que están helados a temperaturas por debajo de los 25ºC, mientras que otros sienten demasiado calor cuando la temperatura sube por encima de los 20ºC.
Situada en el sur de Europa, España sufre menos temperaturas extremas en comparación con muchos países del norte de Europa. Sin embargo, la diferencia entre los máximos del verano y las temperaturas mínimas del invierno hacen que sea necesaria cierta cantidad de calefacción y aire acondicionado.

Pinterest is the newest social network coming from the U.S.
Unlike the known portals as Facebook and Twitter, on Pinterest
you do not communicate with quotes but with images. Users
can manage their own little art gallery, the so called pin board,
¬where they have the possibility to share images of their
hobbies, interests or favourite events with all other users. By
following other users’ pin boards you can also re-pin their
pictures to your own pin board, like them or comment them.
Pinterest is a platform that wants to connect everyone through
things they are interested in.
But why can Pinterest be advantageous to your company?
1. Pinterest is the fastest site ever to brake through the 10 million-
boundary. Having its break-through in 2009 Pinterest could
credit to over 20 million followers only in the U.S. not only three
years after that and became the third-largest network behind
Facebook and Twitter. Therefore it offers a great opportunity
of reaching a huge amount of people with comparatively little
effort.
2. To register in Pinterest you need an account that is either
linked to your Facebook or Twitter profile. As a result, your
Facebook-friends and Twitter-followers can see your re-pins

3. Published pins do spread enormously fast. Four fifth of all
pins are re-pins which results in an increase in the number of

Apodado “la línea de belleza” en el siglo XVIII por el ilustrador William Hogarth, no sorprende que esta forma haya aparecido tantas veces en la arquitectura. Es casi como si los diseñadores respondieran a esta forma sinuosa, atraídos sin entender porque.
Aunque la mayoría de las enciclopedias de arquitectura afirman que el clásico arco conopial comenzó a aparecer en Europa en la primera parte del siglo XIV, se dice que su origen es morisco, lo que no sería de extrañar, considerando la influencia que la cultura islámica tuvo en esta zona durante mucho tiempo.
El arco conopial, el arco de Venecia o ‘cyma reversa’ como también se lo conoce, es una moldura que consta de dos curvas: la cóncava superior y la convexa inferior y es el más ampliamente asociado con el estilo gótico veneciano. Sin embargo, también disfrutó de una
enorme popularidad en toda Europa y un excelente ejemplo puede verse en el diseño de la Catedral de Segovia y el Palau de la Generalitat de Barcelona.
No hay duda de que el arco conopial ha complacido a los ojos más expertos a lo largo de los siglos y aunque ya que carece de la fuerza de antaño, se utiliza como decoración arquitectónica y no para prestar apoyo estructural importante.
Descubrir el arco conopial puede ser un pasatiempo satisfactorio, ya que no es difícil encontrar buenos ejemplos en los arcos ciegos, ventanas, tumbas y los retablos de las iglesias. Dubbed “the line of beauty” in the 18th century by illustrator William Hogarth, it is not surprising that this shape has appeared so often in archi-tecture. It is almost as if designers responded to this sinuous form despite themselves, drawn by an attraction that even they did not fully under-stand.
Although most architectural encyclopaedias claim that the classic ogee arch first appeared in Europe in the early part of the 14th century, it was said to be considered Moorish in origin, not surprisingly considering the influence that Islam-ic culture had over large swathes of this area at that point in history.
The ogee, Venetian arch or ‘cyma reversa’ as it is also known, is a moulding consisting of two curves: the upper concave and lower convex and is most widely associated with the Venetian Gothic style. However, it also enjoyed enormous popularity all over Europe and excellent exam-ples can be seen in the design of Segovia Cathe-dral and the Palau de Generalitat, Barcelona.
There is no doubt that the ogee arch has pleased the eye throughout the centuries, but as it lacks strength, it is used as an architectural decoration rather than to lend important structural support.
Ogee spotting can be an oddly satisfying hobby, since it is not difficult to find excellent examples on historical buildings on ‘blind’ archways, win-dows, tombs and the reredos in churches. Per-haps it is the perfection of its forms that has led to its inclusion in so much ecclesiastical archi-tecture, since it is considered the earthly mani-festation of divine perfection.

La versatilidad y la adaptabilidad son calidades que cada diseñador que se precie debe poseer; por suerte estas son dos palabras que se podría utilizar para describir a Yulia Novikova y su empre-sa JNdesign.
Fundada en 2007, JNdesign ha sido responsa-ble de proyectos en Rusia, Ucrania, la República Checa, Austria, Hungría y España. Trabajar a nivel internacional siempre ha sido el objetivo de Yulia, ya que ella afirma: “Para mí, viajar es tan esencial como respirar”. Nunca es tan feliz como cuando está a bordo de un avión rumbo a otros países para conocer nuevas culturas. “¡No hay límites!”, dice riendo.
Su afición a las diferentes culturas internacionales quizás ha sido influenciada en parte por una lista larga de arquitectos y diseñadores que vienen de todo el mundo: Karim Rashid, Marcel Wanders, Zaha Hadid, A-Cero y Joaquin Torres Architects son sólo son una pequeña selección de las perso-nas y compañeros de profesión que han inspirado a Yulia.
Trabajar en una colaboración estrecha con los cli-entes para asegurarse de que sus visiones se re-flejan en el producto terminado es muy importante para el equipo de JNdesign y Yulia cree que es una parte importante para crear una relación que basa en confianza. “Cuando hemos ganado su confi-anza, frecuentemente nos encontramos trabajan-do en el segundo, tercero y cuarto proyecto, con proyectos de futuro esperando”, dice Yulia con una sonrisa.
Amante de los desafíos, Yulia agradece proyectos arquitectónicos complejos como se demuestra en
dos de las tareas que ha realizado. “La primera fue la con-strucción de dos casas de aproximadamente 900m², pero con diseños totalmente diferentes. Por supuesto, se logró con el aporte constante de nuestros clientes, pero era una tarea enorme y presentaba muchos desafíos en el camino. La segunda tarea fue un trabajo muy agradable, ya que es-tuvimos diseñando un restaurante con 250 cubiertos en un área de más de 1.000m². En este caso tuve la suerte de poder dar rienda suelta a la imaginación y la versión final era totalmente mi visión”. En 2010 fue mencionado como unos de los proyectos ‘Top 10’ en Ucrania, lo que supuso una gran recompensa personal para ella y su empresa JNde-sign.
Parece que el futuro de Yulia traerá un montón de trabajo y por supuesto muchos más viajes. “Encuentro inspiración en todas partes. Mis diseños son mucho más brillantes e inte-resantes cuando visito otros países, veo culturas diferentes y me comunico con gente nueva.”

Versatility and adaptability are qualities that every self-respecting designer should pos-sess; fortunately these are two words that could be used to describe Yulia Novikova and her company, JNdesign.
Founded in 2007, JNdesign has been respon-sible for projects in Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Spain. Work-ing internationally has always been Yulia’s aim, since she claims, “For me, travelling is as essential as breathing” and is never happier than when she is boarding a plane and head-ing for another country, a different culture. “There are no limits!” she laughs.
This extreme internationalism has perhaps been partly influenced by a long list of archi-tects and designers that hail from all around the world: Karim Rashid, Marcel Wanders, Zaha Hadid, A-Cero and Joaquin Torres Ar-chitects are just a small selection of the peo-ple that Yulia names as fellow professionals who have inspired her.
Working closely with clients to ensure that their vision is reflected in the finished product is very important to the team at JNdesign and Yulia believes that it is an important part of building a relationship that is based on trust. “Once we have gained their confidence, we often find ourselves working on the second, third and fourth, with future projects in the pipeline,” Yulia says with a smile.
Relishing a challenge, Yulia welcomes com-plex architectural projects, which is illustrated by two of the tasks she has undertaken. “The first was building two houses of approximate-
ly 900m² but with completely different designs. Of course, this was achieved with constant input from our clients, but it was a huge task and presented many challenges along the way. The second was a very enjoyable job, since we were asked to design a restaurant with 250 covers on an area of more than 1,000m². In this case I was lucky enough to be given free rein and the finished version was entirely my vision. In 2010 it was named as one of the Top 10 projects in Ukraine, which was wonderful personally and also for JNdesign.”
It seems that Yulia’s immediate future will involve plenty of exicting work and of course much more travel. “I find inspiration everywhere. My designs are much brighter and more interesting when I visit different countries, see other cultures and communicate with new people.”

Due to practical constraints, one would imagine that there would be a limit to the number of different things that could be done to a humble chair, however creative the designer. After all, what more must a chair contain than a seat, a back rest and legs to support the whole structure and raise the seat to a level that makes it easy for the owner to use?
Yet some very clever and inventive minds have ensured that there has been no lack of imagination when it has come to the form of chairs through the ages, even if the function has re-mained the same.
In 1958 Arne Jacobsen created the Egg Chair for the Radis-son Blu Royal Hotel in Germany and this became one of the most popular shapes of the 1960s, along with Charles and Ray Eames’s plywood and leather Lounge Chair and Harry Bertoia’s metal Diamond Chair.

Mariani Affreschi is a company dedicated to the crea-tion of some of the world’s finest domestic art. The as-tonishingly intricate and detailed frescoes created by siblings Alberto, Alessandro and Laura and their team of talented artists are the perfect addition to any home. As a city that has seen some impressive sights since its transformation from a humble fishing village, it takes something quite extraordinary to impress the residents of Marbella, but the arrival of Abdullah bin Abdulaziz’s yacht will certainly have attracted attention.
This 427m long boat was, for 22 years after its initial construction in 1984, the longest and tallest motor yacht in the world and can still be regarded as the biggest luxury yacht of the 20th century. The first proud owner of the M/Y Prince Abdulaziz was King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, who naturally ensured that it was decorated and equipped in suitably regal style.
In order to reflect the quality of this magnificent vessel, it was decided that one of the world’s foremost interior designers should be entrusted with the task of turning it into a comfortable and stylish home from home. King Fahd turned to David Nightingale Hicks, at the time Britain’s top
décor expert, whose client list included Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubinstein and perhaps most famously designed sets for director Richard Lester’s 1968 film, Petulia. Apart from its sumptuous interiors, the M/Y Prince Abdulaziz (which after King Fahd’s death was willed to his half-brother) has a top speed of 22 knots and, at a full capacity of 64 guests, requires a crew of 60 to 65.
On inheriting this Helsingør Vaerft built yacht in 2005, Prince Abdulaziz immediately ordered a complete refit, bringing this floating palace into the 21st century. With its high-tech anti-roll system that guarantees stability when at sea, the M/Y Prince Abdulaziz offers even the poorest sailor a very comfortable experience.
However, the best way to be invited on board is to forge a friendship with the prince: this yacht is not available for charter.

Este tér-mino frecuentemente se confunde con el diseño sostenible, aunque estos dos conceptos son totalmente diferentes.
Edwin Toledo nos explica la diferencia: “Sostenibilidad es un con-cepto biológico que hace referencia al equilibrio entre la especie y los recursos medioambientales. Si no se mantiene este equilibrio, significa que la especie está destinada a desaparecer”.

Most people are aware that technology increasingly enables us to take advantage of the earth’s sustainable resources, but few know the extent of the bio-climatic architect’s role. Very often this term is confused with sustainable design, yet these two concepts are by no means identical.
Edwin Toledo is very specific about the difference: “Sustaina-bility is a biological concept that refers to the balance between species and environmental resources. Failure to maintain this balance means that the species is destined to disappear.
“Bio-climatic architecture is committed to the design of the interior with regard to the comfort of the inhabitants by us-ing strategies for a better quality of life in buildings, installing sustainable solutions that will result in a healthier and cheaper lifestyle.”
The Estomar91 team has been actively involved in a number of projects that have required environmentally friendly solutions and recommends whenever possible constructing a building with these basic tenets in mind.
The key tools of the bio-climatic architect are so-called pas-sive systems whose main objectives are:

Of course, this can be combated with awnings and large, free-standing sunshades, but in the extreme heat of midsummer only a swimming pool will do.
