SANTA MONICA PIER AREA/OCEAN AVENUE
OCEAN AVENUE IS FAMOUS FOR THE GEM located at its southern end: The 106-year-old Santa Monica Pier, with its oft-photographed Ferris wheel, is justifiably popular with visitors thanks to a mix of amusement rides and games found at Pacific Park, the venerable theme park at its tip. Diverse dining options and beaches populated with tanned surfers, sun worshipers, and body builders top the list of reasons to spend a day in this neighborhood. And don’t miss the chance to snap a picture on the Pier in front of the End of the Route sign for the legendary Route 66, which officially ends its 2,500-mile journey a few blocks away at Olympic and Lincoln Boulevards.
Ocean breezes and miles of sandy beach distinguish this neighborhood, where the iconic Santa Monica Pier has stood for more than a century.

EAT There is a wide array of dining options on both the Pier and Ocean Avenue. Blue Plate Oysterette (1355 Ocean Ave, 310-576-3474, blueplatesantamonica.com/bpo/santa-monica), the sister restaurant to nearby Blue Plate and Blue Plate Taco, offers a raw bar with several types of ceviche and oysters and traditional seafood-shack fare: lobster rolls, clam chowder, and fish tacos. Rusty’s Surf Ranch (256 Santa Monica Pier, 310-393-7437, rustys surfranch.com) is a longtime Pier destination for mouthwatering cheeseburgers and classic appetizers like chicken wings. For more rustic seafood fare, head to another Pier favorite, The Albright (258 Santa Monica Pier, 310-394-9683, thealbright.com), where dishes like mussels and fries or seared market-fresh fish are enjoyed at communal tables overlooking the sea.
SHOP There are a handful of fun stalls and shops to browse on the Pier, but two really stand out. The second-oldest business here, the original Oatman Rock Shop (321 Santa Monica Pier, 310-394-0780, oatmanrockshop.com), was destroyed when severe storms swept through in 1983. The open-air stall reestablished itself on the upper deck, where it still sells crystals, jewelry, shells, postcards, and maps. Route 66, which ends in Santa Monica just shy of the Pier, lives on inside 66 to Cali (200 Santa Monica Pier, 310-458-8900, route-66-to-california.com), which celebrates
“Mother Road” lore with loads of memorabilia, including T-shirts, road signs, and guidebooks.
PLAY Sitting on five acres of oceanfront property, the Annenberg Community Beach House (415 Pacific Coast Highway, 310-458-4904, annenbergbeachhouse.com) is a public treasure. Tour the Marion Davies Guest House, designed for the actress in the 1920s by Hearst Castle archi-tect Julia Morgan; play volleyball, tennis, or soccer; or just sun-worship. Visit between June and September, and you can swim at the gorgeous public pool. (Make reservations one to three days in advance.) Pacific Park (380 Santa Monica Pier, 310-260-8744, pacpark.com) is an oceanside amusement park featuring fun, games, food, and, of course, rides. Don’t miss the view from the top of the 130-foot Pa-cific Wheel—the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel. Discover more than 100 species of local marine life at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium (located beach-level, below the Pier, 310-393-6149, healthebay.org). Fly through the air at the Trapeze School New York (370 Santa Monica Pier, 310-394-5800, losangeles.trapezeschool.com), which offers daily two-hour classes from its perch on the Pier and patented aerial shows, put on by instructors. —Robin Jones

EAT The Roaring ’20s live on inside The Misfit (255 Santa Monica Blvd, 310-656-9800, themisfitbar.com), a bar that evokes a vintage study with red leather seats, warm lamp-lighting, ceiling-high bookshelves, and sumptu-ous drapes. Imbibe with an extensive cocktail menu, and peruse an ever-changing selection of small plates sourced from the local farmers market. Don’t miss the salted chocolate chip cookies. A classic English pub, Ye Olde King’s Head (116 Santa Monica Blvd, 310-451-1402, yeoldekingshead.com) is known for its fresh cod fish and chips. Hit the bar and order a black and tan (Guinness and ale) or a snake bite (cider and lager) while you catch a Premier League soccer game. Celebrity chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger revolutionized Mexican food in Southern California when they opened Border Grill (1445 Fourth St, 310-451-1655, bordergrill.com). Now, 25 years later, they’ve still got a hot hand in the kitchen, serv-ing signature green corn tamales, plantain empanadas, and chicken panuchos.
SHOP Collectively, Downtown and the Third Street Promenade boast more than 200 shops, with every big brand imaginable, from Apple to Zara. Santa Monica Place (395 Santa Monica Place, 310-260-8333, santamonicaplace.com), a shopping mall at the south end, offers nearly 100 options including department stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s and boutiques like Kitson and Michael Kors. Pioneer of the shop-in-a-shop concept Fred Segal (500 Broadway, fredsegal.com, 310-458-6365) landed in town in 1985 and turned the spotlight on hot new designers by giving them their own boutiques inside a larger building. It’s still the epitome of LA cool, popular with celebrities and name-dropped in movies like Legally Blonde and Clueless.
PLAY Enjoy some of Santa Monica’s best people watching along the Third Street Promenade, where crowds gather for street performers ranging from hip-hop dancers to earnest singer-songwriters to circus acts. Set on the 18th story of the Huntley Santa Monica Beach, The Penthouse (1111 Second St, 310-393-8080, thehuntleyhotel.com) provides a glitzy rendezvous spot with spectacular sunsets enjoyed through a wall of win-dows. Signature cocktails such as a blackberry pineapple sidecar or a white lychee cosmopolitan sweeten the experience. After dark, make your way to the M.I. Westside Comedy Theater (1323-A Third Street Promenade, 310-451-0850, westsidecomedy.com) for some stand-up comedy or a performance from the in-house improv group, Mission IMPROVable. Big names like Aziz Ansari, Zach Galifianakis, and Dave Chappelle have been known to drop in. And keep an eye out for a new movie theater opening in 2015. —Robin Jones

Independent retailers and small, local chains—many with a health-conscious focus—anchor the tree-lined blocks between Pico Boulevard to the north and the city of Venice to the south. On Sundays, families and residents flock to Heritage Square for the bustling farmers market, which features live music and free valet parking for cyclists. EAT Dogtown Coffee (2003 Main St, 310-310-3665, dogtowncoffee.com) uses house-roasted beans in a former surf shop that was once frequented by the legendary local skaters Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams, and Tony Alva—a.k.a. the “Z Boys of Dogtown.” Fuel up on tasty breakfast burritos, salads, and panini, and scope some of the original decks ridden by the crew. At Rawvolution (2301 Main St, 310-392-9501, rawvolution.com), vegans hit the jackpot with chia porridge, eggless egg salad, and superfood soup. Stella Barra Pizzeria (2000 Main St, 310-396-9250, stellabarra.com) serves artisan pizzas with seasonal ingredients, such as crispy purple kale, handpicked oregano, and fresh rosemary. Live music, 18 draft beers and more than 50 international whiskeys are offered at Finn McCool’s Irish Pub (2702 Main St, 310-452-1734, finnmccoolsirishpub.com). Traditional fare such as Guinness beef stew, boxty (potato pancakes) and shepherd’s pie are sure bets, as are lighter options like the “Kaeser” (a kale Caesar salad) and peppered salmon.
SHOP Hard-to-find fashion labels and modern home wares stock sister shops Lost & Found (2230 Main St, 310-450-9565, lostandfoundshop.com) and Lost & Found Home (2000 Main St, 310-450-9782). One of the few brick-and-mortar shops for popular Japanese lifestyle brand Muji (2936 Main St, 310-566-8345, muji.us) is a treasure trove for everything from stationery to skin care, kitchenware to luggage. Since 1988, ZJ Boarding House (2619 Main St, 310-392-5646, zjbh.com) has been a destination for surfers, skateboarders, and snowboarders looking for new sticks, goggles, hoodies, or anything else needed to get the job done in style. Bonus: What began as a small shop has grown into a superstore with adventure brands Billabong and Hurley’s flagship stores right next door.
PLAY Pick up maps, chat with a travel expert, and shop for unique gifts and souvenirs at the Santa Monica Visitor Information Center (2427 Main St, 310-393-7593, santamonica.com) inside Edgemar, a striking building designed by architect Frank Gehry. One block south, the California Heritage Museum (2612 Main St, 310-392-8537, californiaheritagemuseum.org)—set inside the stately former home of Roy Jones, whose father, U.S. Sen. John Percival Jones, founded Santa Monica—displays American decorative and fine arts. Families could spend an entire afternoon at Books and Cookies (2309 Main St, 310-452-1301, booksandcookiesla.com), where dozens of children’s titles line the shelves and enrichment classes include story times, crafts, and “wiggle worm fitness.” —Elizabeth Jenkins

EAT The popular bar at R+D Kitchen (1323 Montana Ave, 310-395-3314, hillstone.com/#/ restaurants/cafeRandD) is always bustling, and for good reason: The mojitos, greyhounds, Bloody Marys, and other classic cocktails are worth the wait. So are the crispy chicken sandwich, the seared ahi salad, Reubens, and deviled eggs. One of the newest spots on this stretch, Kye’s (1518 Montana Ave, 310-395-5937, kyesmontana.com) caters to health-conscious diners with its signature “Kyeritos”: burritos bundled in nori or collard greens rather than tortillas, making them gluten-free and dairy-free. Vegan options abound, but carnivores can sink their teeth into the Nori Burger, featuring grass-fed ground beef mixed with chard and brown rice. On the other end of the spectrum, Father’s Office (1018 Montana Ave, 310-736-2224, fathersoffice.com) has been called LA’s original gastropub and serves what many critics and foodies have pegged as the best burger in the Los Angeles area. Wash it down with one of the 36 rotating craft beers on tap.
SHOP Luxurious sweater coats, cardigans, and cable-knit pullovers hang from the racks at the Margaret O’Leary boutique (1605 Montana Ave, 310-496-1800, margaretoleary.com), a San Francisco–based company that uses Scottish cashmere to make its impossibly soft, cozy knitwear. Kiehl’s (1516 Montana Ave, 310-255-0055, kiehls.com), which began as an apothecary in New York’s East Village in 1851, specializes in moisturizers, cleansers, toners, and other skin-care products—the blue astringent was a favorite of Andy Warhol. At Pink Chicken (1524 Montana Ave, 310-395-6048, pinkchicken.com), moms can shop for their kids and themselves; the stylish, casual clothing for babies, little girls, tweens, and women mixes bright col-ors and cheerful patterns for a beachy-chic feel.
PLAY Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2015, the Aero Theatre (1328 Montana Ave, 310-260-1528, americancinemathequecalendar.com) screens indepen-dent movies, film-festival winners, classics, and releases from up-and-coming filmmakers, often with directors and actors in attendance. A block away, Tara Gallery (1202 Montana Ave, 310-451-2417, taragallery.org), run by the American Foundation for Contemporary Iranian Art, spotlights works produced by artists living and working in Iran. Visitors to Aerial Physique (625 Montana Ave, 323-540-1580, aerialphysique.com) can hone their own brand of performance art with a Cirque du Soleil–style workout that involves dangling from long swaths of silk while learning tricks and exercises aimed at toning arms, abs, and legs. —Robin Jones

Named one of the most “heavenly” Italian restaurants by USA Today, Valentino Ristorante (3115 Pico Blvd, 310-829-4313, valentinosantamonica.com) has been a local standby for classics like lasagnetta and veal piccata for more than 40 years. Better still, the menu features modern additions, such as gluten-free pasta. LA native chef Josie Le Balch offers casual fare at Next Door by Josie (2420 Pico Blvd, 310-581-4201, nextdoorbyjosie.com), with sharable plates such as beer-and-bacon caramel corn and tomato panzanella salad.
SHOP Acapillow Home Furnishings (3030 Pico Blvd, 310-399-7309, acapillow.com) got its start 20 years ago crafting handmade pillows from vintage fabrics. Today the shop has expanded to offer eclectic home furnishings such as upholstered chairs and wooden side tables, not to mention French soaps and scented candles. Known for its signature yoga accessories like mats, kneepads, and padded carry straps, YogaRat (2703 Pico Blvd, 310-584-1090, yogarat.com) is the place for local yogis to gear up for their next session. Just steps off Pico, Brat (1938 14th St, 310-452-2480, bratstore.com) offers adorable new and vintage clothing and accessories, plus zany touches like tutus, fishnets, and petticoats that can transform an everyday outfit into appropriate costume-party attire.
PLAY McCabe’s Guitar Shop (3101 Pico Blvd, 310-828-4497, mccabes.com) boasts “the largest collection of stringed things in California” and performances from the likes of Lucinda Williams and Junior Brown. Knock back some pins at the recently renovated Bowlmor Lanes (234 Pico Blvd, 310-399-7731, bowlmor.com/santa-monica), featuring glow-in-the-dark lanes and comfortable banquettes. Waiters deliver everything from draft beer to margherita pizza straight to your lane. To the east Virginia Avenue Park (2200 Virginia Blvd, 310-458-8688, smgov.net), home to a popular Saturday farmers market, features a sunny, sky-lit library plus nearly 10 acres worth of lighted basketball courts, playgrounds, a splash pad, and large grassy areas perfect for a soccer match or just soaking in some rays. —Elizabeth Jenkins

ACCESSED BY MAJOR THOROUGHFARES Wilshire Boulevard and the Santa Monica 10 Free-way, Mid-City is a burgeoning arts district anchored by destinations like the 18th Street Arts Center and Bergamot Station, home to more than 40 galleries. A diverse array of dining options add to the neighbor-hood’s appeal. Arriving in early 2016, the Exposition Light Rail will also ferry visitors to the streets here with a new stop at Bergamot Station. —Molly Woodstock
Fine arts destinations and tucked-away cafés highlight this flourishing neigh-borhood, as does the addition of the new Expo Line in early 2016.

WILSHIRE BOULEVARD
BEGINNING AT OCEAN AVENUE and running all the way through Santa Monica and Beverly Hills and into downtown Los Angeles, Wilshire Boulevard is one of the most well-known streets in town. It borders the Third Street Promenade on its southwestern edge and contains the hugely popular Douglas Park, known for playing fields, lawn bowling, reflecting pools, and natural landscaping. Eateries catering to every palate line the avenue, with a concentration of Mexican restaurants, both new and old favorites. Numerous designer consignment shops dot the avenue, as well, catering to fashionistas on a budget. The strip ends at the scenic Palisades Park, known for its inspiring sunset vistas. —Elizabeth Jenkins
This well-traveled thoroughfare claims landmark restaurants, cutting-edge workouts, and good old-fashioned retail therapy.

OCEAN PARK BOULEVARD/SANTA MONICA AIRPORT AREA
THE SANTA MONICA AIRPORT—which services private and charter planes—has long been home to the Museum of Flying. First opened in 1974, the avia-tion museum was completely refurbished in 2012 and houses a trove of historic aircraft and a modern flight simulator. Other attractions include a garden of na-tive plants, a twice-monthly antique market, a pair of restaurants, and two observation decks. Just to the north Ocean Park Boulevard runs all the way from the sand to the city’s eastern edge. Tucked among the numerous residences, you’ll find delicious, lo-cally owned restaurants, some of the city’s best shops, and aviation-themed Clover Park’s spacious recre-ational fields and green spaces. —Elizabeth Jenkins
With its restaurants, parks, museum, and shops, the Santa Monica Airport and nearby Ocean Park Boulevard provide fun for all.
