NHPA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE By Wally Shipley

August 21, 1980 Joe W. Daivs, Mayor City of Huntsville P.O. Box 308 Huntsville, Alabama 35804

Dear Mayor Davis: On behalf of the NHPA, thanks for your part in hosting the 1980 World Horseshoe Tournament in Huntsville, Alabama. Please convey our appreciation to your staff and the community. The Recreation Department, Huntsville Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Jaycees, Hunt-sville Horseshoe Club, State Horseshoe Association and American Red Cross support, cooperation and hard work helped to make it a successful event. Glen Wallace and his staff did a super job, along with Mr. and Mrs. Ose Veesey. Both local and major television, radio and newspaper coverage of the event was the best ever in my seven years as NHPA president. The tours arranged were appreciated. Sheila Roberts and myself thank the Space and Rocket Center in allowing us to pitch horseshoes using a space suit on their simulated moon surface. The committee's hospitatlity and attendance during the tournament was great. You certainly have reason to be proud of everyone involved. Congratulations on your successful bid in again hosting the World Tournament in 1982. I am happy to hear the clay and stake situation will be corrected. We will look forward to our return visit.

Sincerely,

Wally Shipley NHPA President

The above letter was personally addressed and sent to other Huntsville city officials, VIP'sHuntsville Horseshoe Club and State officers.

ANOTHER SANCTIONED LEAGUE REPORT By Russell Gadoury

On May 14 the Monongahela Valley H.P.A. in West Virginia became the first club to sanc-tion a junior league, composed of 3 girls and 5 boys, ages 13-15. The youngsters play by the same format as the adults and will have pitched 63 (21 point or 50 shoe) games by the end of the season. The club sponsors the youngsters. Of course, the NHPA will make the same awards to them as to the adults. Does your club have a league program for juniors?

On June 2 young David Eyestone of Webster, Minn., wrote and asked for a Sanction Re-quest form. He will be a junior sanction, too. Let's have every junior league in the country in

6 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/October, 1980 LEAGUE REPORT - (Continued) the program. They are the lifeblood of our sport.

I failed to mention, in my last report, that a number of clubs whose members made "top ten" in National Award categories made extensive use of that fact in their local newspaper publicity. It was good publicity for their club, their members, and the NHPA. When you are trying to get publicity, keep in mind that articles can be more effective if national and state organizations are seen to be recognizing or otherwise supporting your local organization. So play it up for all its worth.

Did you know that the champion team in the Jackson Legion Horseshoe Club of Minnesota was composed of captain Bill Grunet (age 77), Ted Kielblock (age 73), John Libra (age 72), and "rookie" Carl Johnson (age 71)? And that they are trying to win again in 1980?

As I write, June 2, nine of the thirteen "original" clubs in the program have written to say they are back in again for the third time, in 1980. This one fact ought to tell us something about the value of the sanctioned league program.

It is believed that he fell asleep at the wheel and left the raod and crashed into the rear of a parked semi killing him instantly.

He was employed by the Indian Health Services of the H.E.W. He was a top pitcher for many years in Class A competition having played in several World turnaments, the last being at Des Moines, Iowa in 1978.

He was known for his quiet nature and manner and in his leisure time around the courts he was an introspective person with a wry sense of humor.

The Oregon State Association and that of the NHPA extends its sympathy to his loving wife and family in their great loss. He will be sadly missed by his many friends.

Bill's inspiration and love for the game will always remain with the members who knew and loved him. He will be miseed on the courts by his many friends. The sympathy of the NE-OS-CO club and the New York State Association is extended to his beloved wife and family.

SMITH AND WETHERBEE REIGN AT LARAMIE WYOMING OPEN Evelyn Smith, Wyoming State champ and genial Dick Wetherbee took titles in the A Classes.

Genial Dick lost two but Evelyn appeared to be unbeatable in her Class. Raymond stood tall in the saddle until late in the tournament. A loss of Raymond's final game moved him into a tie with Tulk for second place.

Hanshew of Scottsbluff, NB, sparked by the cool air of this high country, showed his op-ponents how to ring the stake. He lost one and finished with a good ringer percentage in Class B.

GONZALES GRABS HOLLISTER OPEN LAURELS (NO. CALIF.)

Jesse's back. The diminutive flip-flop artist from Los Oso traveled north to Veterans Memorial Park in Hollister and effectively throttle seven aspiring competitors; averaged 76.4%, and recoreded a 90% game. Don Titcomb of San Jose placed second losing only to Jesse. On-rushing, Jack Sorg of the Golden Gate Club pitched his first 80% plus game to finish near the 60% mark. Group 2 was won by Ed Floyd, who always seems to rise to the occasion. Martin Lasich pitched the high percentage game of the group; 65.4%. Hometowner, Gene Castro was victorious over Bill Victorino in a playoff 50-20 to garner Group 3 honors. CHAMPIONSHIP — Jesse Gonzales, 7-0-76.4; Don Titcomb, 6-1-71.5; Ron Sanders, 5-2-57.5; Jack Sorg, 4-3-59.6; Bob Mauzey, 2-5-50.7; Al Guiriato, 2-5-49.0; Vern Gosney, 2-5-48.5; Fred Lavett, 0-7-37.6.

RUSS GADOURY SURPRISE WINNER OF 1980 MASS. OPEN It may not have been the artistic success of the Heritage Club championship four weeks

earlier, but Russ Gadoury further confounded the odds makers, his critics, and himself by win-ning his second Class A title in the Mass Open played at South Hamilton on June 22. Gadoury saved his best games for top contenders Bob and Ed Domey and Charlie Richardson, with the major upset being his game against Bob Domey. In that game Russ came from a 22-0 deficit to win 35-31. Bob Domey's tournament high game of 81.5% included 23 in a row near the end of that particular game.

Lee Ashford won an exceptionally tight competition in Class B, with a clean sweep. Dom Majewski pitched high game, 67.2%. Bill Davis picked his spots in Class C with a 6-1 record. Paul Dumont was top scorer at 69.2%.

Paul Ducharme had retired from the tournament wars for a couple of years and marked his return in fine fashion by winning Class D. Ray Fife picked up high game at 52.5%. Wayne Packard edged out a one game victory margin in Class E. He was nosed out for high game honors, however, by Bob Harriman's 59.1%.

Class F involved a four way playoff between Francis McMahon, Mike Kibbee, Pete Sevigny, and Bill Progen. McMahon emerged the winner, hitting 47.1% in the final playoff over

Kibbee. Kibbee had popped 52.9% in his first playoff. A couple of months ago Tom Courtney was walking on air with a 50% game. He is flying even higher now after hitting 6(X

Ed Harrington saves his best for Mass Opens, specifically Mass Open playoffs. He pitched a strong playoff game of 42.1% to withstand the challenge of Charlie Tracchia in Class G. Al Doucette was high game pitcher at 46%. Chuck McNeill had no junior competition so settled for a playoff victory over Revere Brooks to win Class H. Again, someone else had high game—Dick Olsen at 30% even.

linda Pateneaude swept through the Women's Class with 8 straight and 66.3 percent. Her games ranged from a low of 60% to a high of 72%.

South Hamilton pitchers turned out in force to assure excellent playing conditions at all times.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/October, 1980

"From Out Of The Mail Bag"

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest Editorial Office P.O. Box 1606 Aurora, Illinois 60507 Dear Mr. Cobb:

Sooner or later someone will come up with a solution to the 4'too long" horseshoe game. The solution will no doubt will not make everyone happy as that would be impossible. I am submitting an idea that will shorten the game especially in the high percentage games. It seems most of the good pitchers prefer the 50 point game and the cancellation method so that part of the scoring system must be surely retained. First, I would like to throw in a thought. When a person is standing there ready to pitch he is going to attempt to pitch one ringer then another for perfection. Our present system counts each ringer 3 points individually but nothing for perfection. Suppose now for a shorter game we gave 2 points for perfection. Now, retaining our cancellation system if the opponent pitches no ringers than the 2 ringers would be worth 8 points ( 3 points each ringer plus 2 points for perfection). If the opponent pitches 1 ringer then the pitcher with 2 ringers would score 5 points (3 points for 1 uncancelled ringer plus 2 perfec-tion points). If pitchers were perfect then everything cancels. This is a very simple change that can be learned in about 30 seconds. It is easily incorporated into the game and when two good pitchers are battling it out the game could be about 33% shorter. Any comments? Sincerely, Elmer L. Swartz

1980 "ADVANCE MAN" REPORT By Bernard Herfurth

This is the final write-up concerning "Advance Man" to the 1980 Huntsville World Tourna-ment.

The newly built courts at the Brahan Spring Park was picturesque site for a world tourna-ment as we could ask for.

503 NHPA membes from throughout the United States and Canada come to pitch in cham-pionship and extra classes. They came to help promote our sport by taking part in this annual event.

There was no opposition voiced at the convention when Huntsville was again awarded the 1982 World Tournament.

Publicity was the best ever. N.B.C. TV covered the final day and was broadcast coast to coast on the "Today Show" Monday Morning August 4. "PM Magazine was also at the site during the final days. 3 local TV stations were at the courts daily starting two days before the start of the tournament. The 10 o'clock news was broadcast from the courtsite on two different nights.

Radio coverage was excellent with Jim Dalton of WFIX sending tapes of interviews to New York where they were broadcasting coast to coast and around the world via "The Armed Ser-vices Network" on ABC Sports. Bill Kling of Station WLRH sent releases to the "Associated Press" and "UPI" which were sent over the radio networks of the AP and UPI. Other local radio stations gave out tournament news.

The Huntsville Times Newspaper was short-handed due to vacations but Al Burleson, Assis-tant Sports Editor gave front page sports coverage in his four-to-five page sport section. Horseshoe coverage was new to BUrleson but he was a fast cooperative learner. A young 17 year sports writer, Scott Lucas, covered for the morning paper, the Huntsville News.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/October, 1980 1980 HALL OF FAME ANNUAL MEETING

By Bernard Herfurth The meeting opened with President Wally Shipley thanking the committee for their 1980

Hall of Fame selections. The committee inspected proposed "label pins" for Hall of Fame members that have been

elected. The proposed pin was tabled for the time being. The chairman of the committee will have future custody of the Hall of Fame book. The

book will be updated and more material will be asked from some elected members to make more complete pages in this book.

Chairman Herfurth had the book micro-filmed. In case of an accident, this book could not be replaced. The micro-film will be insured and if necessary the pages would be restored to full size at no cost other than a reasonable yearly storage fee.

A report was given by the chairman concerning the miniature Hall of Fame book that has previously been sold to the membership. It was offered as a non-profit book and to date has paid for itself.

The committee gave committee member Lee Davis permission to develop a special small pla-que for "NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN CANDIDATES TO THE HALL OF FAME IN THE 1920 ERA."

The Committee voted to return to a "majority vote" in electing Hall of Fame candidates. It was changed for the 1980 election for one year to 60% of the total vote.

It was voted to consider both the achievements as a player and as organizer in the histories of candiates in the "over 70" category.

The chairman suggested the "Preimesberger Arena" in Minnesota to be the home of the NHPA Hall of Fame on a year to year basis. The committee voted to do so. The plan was ac-cepted by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Preimesberger. In a later issue of our digest the membership will be asked to donate interesting "game related items" to our Hall of Fame sit.

Nine committee members were in meeting attendance. Thanks to Ruth Hangen for acting as secretary again.

11th ANNUAL NEOS-CO TOURNAMENT WON BY FENICCHIA The NE-OS-CO Horseshoe Club in Pulaski, New York, held it's 11th Annual tournament at

Dunbar Field on July 12th and 13. The tournament was dedicated to the memory of Bill Fuller, Lacona, who passed away on July 11. Bill was well-known in horseshoe circles. He was one of the founders of the NE-OS-CO Club, was it's first member to hit a yearly league average of 60%, was a past President of the New York Horseshoe Association, and has been inducted in the New York Hall of Fame.

We had 100 players in the men's classes, A through L. They were all 8 man classes with the exception of A and D which were low man classes. The Ladies had 22 players, 8 in A, 6 in B and 6 in C. Juniors had 6 in Class A and 8 in Class B. The biggest problem of pitching 136 com-petitors was space. Our twelve lighted clay courts were in action from 9 a.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, and again 9 a.m. Sunday to the end at about 8 p.m. Sunday. Saturday night Class E had a three-way tie for first. The players decided that the fastest and most equitable way to break the tie was for the two lower ringer percentage players have a playoff and the win-ner of that match play the one with the highest percentage in regular play. This was the game at ended at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. The play was 35 point cancellation. Most of the games were over at under 50 shoes but a few went as high as 74 shoes. All ties for first were played off. Ties for other positions were determined by ringer percentage.

JOE KRUG WINNER OF HERMISTON, OREGON MONEY TOURNEY Many thanks go to Rick and Pat Rebman and their helpers for another good Oregon Open

money tournament. $3785 was handed out in prize money with Joe Krug the recipient of $400 for the championship title. Sandy Bartel was the winner in the women's competition. Con-gratulations Joe and Sandy and all the rest of the money winners. Registration was the most ever with 76 entries. Even the weather cooperated beautifully this year and some of us went home with sunburns. Many prizes were donated by local merchants and drawings were held both days for scorekeepers, with prizes going to the lucky winners. The Hermiston Herald newspaper and radio station KOHU are to be commended for their excellent coverage of the tournament. Good publicity is always welcome.

Some tournament highlights: Henry Knauft started with 35 ringers in a row against Barry Chapelle. They had 7 consecutive 4 deads — Joe Krug started with 31 out of 32 ringers against Lowell Davis — Bernard Martell won only one game, the best of his career at 76.9, against B. Chapelle, — on the first day of play, Davis and Monasmith both lost their best game and won the other 4 games — Knauft had consectuvie games of 84.9 and 85.2. B. Chapelle had 3 con-secutive games over 100 shoes — Davis, Monasmith and Krug ended round robin play in Class A with 2 losses each. Monasmith defeated Davis in 1st playoff game but lost to Krug in 2nd playoff game — Knauft and B. Chapelle had best ringer percentages for the tournament but finished 4th and 5th. Pete Zumaran lost first game and won the rest of his game to win Class B. Gene Mitchell did the same thing in Class E — Hugo Lenz rode his motorcycle 1100 miles from Wyoming to compete — Les Andrews pitched 3 games at 50% or better in Class C and lost all 3 games — Jack Salter pitched his high game of 64.7% in Class D against the tourney host Rick Rebman — Kelly O'Brien pitched 2 games of 100 shoes — Sandy Bartel won 2 out of 3 playoff games with Kelly for the Women's Title. Some interesting comeback games were: B. Chapelle behind Rehard 15-34, won 51-39; Monasmith behind Davis 13-34 in playoff game, won 50-40 — Leggett behind Monasmith 9-37; lost 43-55 — Monasmith behind B.
