From the President’s Pen

Dear Psi State Sisters,

The Psi State Convention is rapidly approaching and many hands are working diligently to make this convention an incredible experience for all. We are proud and honored to have our International President as our guest for the convention, Dr. Beverly Helms. This is an opportunity to experience beyond the chapter level and sample a smorgasbord of Delta Kappa Gamma offerings and meet the top officer of our Society. You will find her warm, inviting, and inspiring. We have chosen the Macon Marriott Downtown as our venue with its comfortable guest rooms, fabulous food, and outstanding convention facilities adjacent to the property. The historic town of Macon is in the heart of Georgia, convenient crossroads for all traveling from any corner of the state. Convention kicks off Friday night, April 5, with opening ceremonies, author Ed Grisamore as guest speaker, and District Meetings to select new district directors for the next biennium. Saturday will be filled with meetings, spectacular workshops, and a hat and glove luncheon. Don’t forget to sign up for the late afternoon tour of Macon’s featured architecture at a local bejeweled church and the historic Hayhouse. The evening will be magical with our Presidents’ Banquet as chapter presidents are in the spotlight and new state officers are installed. Sunday morning we invite you to gather for the Remembrance Ceremony honoring our sisters who have passed away during the biennium. A poignant and moving ceremony has been planned to remind us of their love and contributions to our great Society and our love and respect of them. The success of this convention will be stellar if YOU are there. Bring your chapter members and make memories while we continue to be…

6 Psi State News Winter 2013

Dear Rose,

I am sad to report that one of our chapter members recently passed away. Do you have any suggestions for honoring our departed sister? As a new membership chair, I also need to know what forms should be submitted.

Thanks, Susan

Dear Susan, Please express my deepest sympathy to your chapter. One of the best ways to honor a departed sister’s contributions to education and the Society is to conduct a remembrance service at a chapter meeting or as a separate event. The newly revised Ceremonies book has suggestions for necrology programs that can be easily adapted to meet your chapter’s needs.

Submitting the proper necrology forms is very important. The chapter president is responsible for submitting Form 6-Report of the Death of a Member immediately upon the death of a member. In addition, the president (or her designee) should submit Form 2-Chapter Necrology Annual Report by February 1st of each year. Both forms can be downloaded from the DKG website. (Go to www.dkg.org; click on “Forms”; click on “Reports” for Form 6 OR click on “Reports”; click on “Chapter Reports” for Form 2.) Information from these forms is used to update membership rosters and to honor deceased members in the Psi State News and at necrology services held during International and state conventions.

Regards,

Rose

District IIBetty Richardson - I’ve had a great fall visiting chapters and meeting new DKG sisters. What could be better than seeing the beautiful leaves and receiving apples from North Georgia? In December, I visited the Governor’s Mansion with sisters of Beta Kappa and Beta Rho chapters. District II chapters have excellent biennium officers that have already initiated several new sisters. The chapters have planned impressive biennium programs that promote the seven purposes and are working hard on many service projects. District II is the best!

Greetings District III Sisters! I attended the Delta Hostel weekend in October at Jekyll Island and had a wonderful time reconnecting with sisters from all over the state. I also appreciate the hard work that the chapter presidents and their members are doing as they continue to move forward as movers and thinkers during this biennium. Remember to mark your calendars for the Psi State Convention scheduled April 5-7 at the Marriott Hotel located in Macon, Georgia. I am also looking forward to my chapter visits during the winter.

The group enjoyed a tour of farming structures, olive presses, and grain threshing floors. While at the sheepfold, they saw sheepdog collars of the biblical era. The day ended with a great lunch including over 14 dishes often found at feasts in ancient times.

Delta HostelJekyll Island, Georgia

October 2012

On a glorious mid-October weekend, 52 Psi State sisters descended on Jekyll Island for a biennial Delta Hostel. It began Friday evening with registration at the Oceanside Inn and Suites and as the name suggests, provided a lovely ocean view from our rooms. That evening, everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner and fellowship at Fin's. Saturday morning, we awoke to a beautiful ocean sunrise followed by a bountiful breakfast buffet. A tour of Millionaires’ Village was next on the agenda and we were blessed to have a tour guide who w a s extremely knowledgeable of the homes and their history. The sisters of Alpha Alpha, a local chapter, provided a picnic lunch which was prepared by the Career Academy culinary students. Each member received a clay sea turtle which was created by the students of Needwood Middle School. Later that afternoon we visited the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Here we learned how injured sea turtles are rehabilitated and of measures taken by the island to protect them. Our Saturday afternoon free time a l l o w e d for touring and exploration. That evening we enjoyed a Low Country Boil at the hotel where a professor from Coastal Georgia College presented on the history of Jekyll Island. It was an eventful weekend with much positive feedback. Food, fun, and fellowship were enjoyed by all. I am thankful we had such beautiful weather and for my committee members who are Susan Woods, Ann Boswell, Shelia Hawthorne, and Kate Finch.
