T he 1983 movie A Christmas Story proved to be a breakout event for child actor Peter Billingsley. Appearing in the

movie as the adorable nine-year old Ral-phie Parker, Billingsley found fame with

his character’s quest for an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle.

A Chistmas Story, The Musical! began life in the mind of author, radio host, raconteur, and comic genius Jean Shepherd. Based on his

childhood in 1930’s Indiana, Shepherd spun a series of tales that he either published as short stories, read for his radio audience, or presented live on the college circuit. Among these were “Duel in the Snow, or Red Ry-der Nails the Cleveland Street Kid,” “Flick’s Tongue,” and “My Old Man And The Las-civious Special Award That Heralded The Birth Of Pop Art.”

These stories and others were woven by Shepherd, screenwriter Leigh Brown, and director Bob Clark into a screenplay for the 1983 MGM film. In its theatrical release, the film’s box office performance was only

mediocre, but after Ted Turner purchased the MGM film li-brary in 1986, and Time-Warner subsequently acquired Turner Entertainment Company, the film found a new life on cable television.

Beginning in the late 1980’s and continuing through the 90’s until today, A Christmas Story has steadily grown in popularity and now occupies the number one spot on several prominent lists of all-time favorite Christmas movies. For over a decade, TNT has broadcast a 24-hour marathon of the film each holiday season that sets ratings records. With the movie’s ever-growing audience, a play version of the story was released and produced in regional theatres around the country in 2000. Then work began in 2006 on the musical when veteran playwright Joseph Robinette with director Eric Rosen started creating a script which would eventu-ally become a workshopped musical produc-tion in Kansas City for Christmas 2009.

During those years, Billingsley continued to act, eventually moving on to produce and direct. In the early nineties, he and comedy icon Vince Vaughn starred in an after school special advising kids about the dangers of us-ing steroids (it was actually Billingsley who appeared as the kid on steroids in the film!).

A new Ralphie with his Red Ryder

The two hit it off leading to the cre-ation of their own production com-pany and several producing credits for Billingsley in-cluding Iron Man, Four Christmases, and The Break-up, with a directing credit for Couples Retreat.

After the suc-cess of A Christ-mas Story’s Kansas City production, Billingsley found himself drawn back to his child-star roots with the opportunity to join the executive production team and bring the show to Se-attle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. There it went from workshop produc-tion to full-scale musical ex-ceeding projections, impressing Broadway producers across the country and becoming the sec-ond highest single-ticket selling show in the 5th Avenue’s history.

The goal for the show, and for Billingsley is to see A Christmas Story, The Musical! tour the country and find a home on Broad-way. “The film brings a lot of joy to a lot of

people,” he told People magazine, “I always get asked ‘aren’t you over it?’ but I’m not.” In an interview with the

Hollywood Reporter he said “A Christ-mas Story has always meant a lot to me per-sonally and to audiences world-wide. I’m excited to bring this film to the stage be-cause the story and the charac-

ters lend themselves so well to the exciting ingredients that become available in the world of musicals. Just think about the idea of a Leg Lamp Kickline!”

Set in the fictional town of Hulman, In-diana, A Christmas Story, The Musical! fol-lows Ralphie and his quest to ensure that his

Red Ryder Air Rifle ends up under his fam-ily’s Christmas tree. Along the way he and his family overcome hilarious obstacles, win a “major award” and deal with a host of out-rageous holiday experiences.

With songs both funny and sentimental by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and a faithful yet inventive book by Joseph Robinette, A Christmas Story, The Musical! paints a re-freshing holiday portrait of a simpler time in America. By capturing every child’s holiday wonder with deliciously wicked wit, a nos-talgic eye, and a heart of gold, it’s a Christ-mas present that Detroiters of all ages will be sure to cherish for generations to come—and send producer Peter Billingsley sled-ding to success.

Celebrating 50 years of Broadway at the Fisher Theatreelcome to the 50th anniversary of Broadway per-formances at the Fisher Theatre. Five decades of memorable theatrical productions have crossed this

stage and this season brings a culmination of shows that has something for everyone.

Originally built as a movie and vaudeville house, the Fisher Theatre opened on November 11, 1928 with a Ma-yan décor and 3,500 seats. As other movie palaces began to struggle and fall apart, the original Fisher closed its doors on

December 31, 1960. In 1961, under the management of the

Nederlander Family, the theatre was then renovated into a beautiful legitimate stage theatre. The new Fisher Theatre opened to the public in October 1961, with the pre-Broadway opening of the Schwartz-Dietz musical The Gay Life starring Barbara Cook and Walter Chiari.

To ensure an intimate atmosphere and optimal sight lines, the original 3,500 seats were scaled down to 2,089 with the last row of the balcony only ninety-two feet from the stage. East Indian rosewood and walnut pan-eling, imported Italian marble, specially de-signed crystal chandeliers and bronze deco-rative work blended with the soft gold house curtain to create a timeless and elegant décor that still adorns the Fisher auditorium.

In the theatre’s main lobby stands a regal eight-and-a-half-foot bronze statue titled “The Dancer,” sculpted by Edoard Chassa-ing, director of the Sculpture Department of the Art Institute of Chicago at the time of commission.

Through the years, the Fisher has wel-comed countless stars and many national premieres. Carol Channing in Hello Dolly!,

directed by Gower Champion, had its pre-Broadway pre-miere at the Fisher, as did Fiddler on the Roof with Zero Mostel, Sweet Charity with Gwen Verdon and Golden Boy starring Sammy Davis Jr.

Season after season, the Fisher Theatre has attracted out-standing national touring productions including the national tour premiere of Movin’ Out in 2006 and the late Arthur Laurents’ revival of West Side Story in 2010.

Some of the other stars who have per-formed at the Fisher Theatre through the years include Julie Harris, Alfred Drake, Eartha Kitt, Ethel Merman, Joel Grey, Mary Martin, Robert Preston, Pearl Bailey, Robert Goulet, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave, Kathleen Turner, Henry Fonda, Robert Morse, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, John Travolta and most recently, Constantine Ma-roulis and John O’Hurley.

Today the legendary theatre continues to operate under the Nederlander management, offering audiences the very best live theat-rical and musical productions. From Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winners to new blockbusters, the Fisher Theatre is Detroit’s home for the finest theatrical entertainment.

Our most sincere thanks goes to you, our subscribers and patrons, for joining us for the past fifty years. We look forward to creating more memories with you for the next fifty.

the punk-popera staging of Green Day’s epic concept album that will play at the Detroit Opera House January 17–22, 2012.

Michael Mayer, American Idiot’s direc-tor and co-writer (with Billie Joe Armstrong and the rest of Green Day), won a 2008 Tony for Spring Awakening. Though his previous tuners have included Thoroughly Modern Millie and Triumph of Love, the director is

sufficiently au courant that Green Day’s al-bum bowled him over. Part of it was timing; American Idiot came out just months before Bush’s 2004 reelection, turning its defiant howl against the “redneck agenda” (as one lyric goes) into a prophetic yawp.

“I thought, my God,” Mayer recalls, “these punks from Oakland are talking about what it’s like to live in Bush’s America right now. And the rage and the love in equal measure throughout the album I just found incredibly complicated and dazzling—and tuneful.”But theatrical? Armstrong’s earnest, anguished lyrics loosely sketched the emotional journey of an aimless antihero (“Jesus of Suburbia”) through a dystopian cityscape (“Boulevard of Broken Dreams”), where he falls under the thrall of a charismatic drug dealer (“St. Jimmy”) and a fiery, idealistic girlfriend (“She’s a Rebel,” “Extraordinary Girl”), then

loses them both and returns to the comfort-able oblivion of the suburbs (“Homecom-ing,” “Whatshername”).

“The project’s conceit was that I would take the record and basically write story onto it and from inside it,” Mayer says. “The amount of freedom I had to dream and imag-ine was unprecedented for me.” In addition to the album’s Jesus-Jimmy-Whatshername tri-angle, Mayer layered on another trio. Johnny now has two suburban pals: Will, who stays home against his wishes; and Tunney, who enlists to fight in Iraq. Though Mayer add-ed little dialogue to Armstrong’s lyrics, he hopes that by sharing words among a dozen performers, he’s created a kind of found-text libretto for a multipronged narrative that en-twines city, suburb and battlefield.

“I had great anxiety about the liberties we were taking, dramatically as well as emo-tionally,” Mayer recalls. “I kept thinking we would cross a line that would be intolerable, but instead Billie Joe kept urging me to go further, which was encouraging—and terri-fying.” He adds that he found it gratifying, yet surreal, to talk with the songwriter about characters he had originated for a wholly dif-ferent medium.

What does this fable—set “in the recent past”—have to say to Obama’s America? “I wish the state of our union didn’t still feel as resonant as it does with the show,” says May-er with a shudder. “I think it’s really good at this moment not to forget how our coun-try got this way and to maintain a healthy amount of anger about it.”

It’s not Green Day’s style, though, to sulk; its bleakest tunes often chime brightly in ma-jor keys. That puts American Idiot in lofty company, Mayer says. “Even the most tragic opera you go to see at the Met is stirring and rousing, and the music is gorgeous to sing,” he asserts. “It inspires the performers to great heights of expression, and to the joy of performing. And I think all that’s in here.”

labor and they had to rush to the hospital with other family members in tow.

“We were in our seats, and suddenly Janice started having contractions.” Linda remem-bers. “The people around us started moving away, and I thought ‘Oh boy, she is going to have the baby now! The ushers came with a wheelchair and helped us on our way. As we left, one of them called out and offered us tickets to come back.”

Since then, Linda and Barbara have main-tained their subscriptions, and they’ve en-joyed lots of trips to the theatre with Janice, Jeremy and many other family members.

Thank you, Linda & Barbara, for sharing your Fisher Theatre memories with us! If you have a story you’d like to share, contact Scott Myers, our director of Corporate Sales & Marketing at [email protected].

Barbara Winters of Lathrup Village has had her subscription since the Fisher Theatre opened in 1961. “A girlfriend and I had tick-ets to the Schubert Theatre before it closed. When they announced they were opening the Fisher and season tickets were available, we bought them.” Some of her favorite shows are Jekyll& Hyde, Martin Guerre, and Jo-seph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream-coat with Donny Osmond.

She and her sister Linda Krall of Redford got their love for theatre from their mother, and they fondly remember taking her to see 42nd Street. “She always wanted to be a dancer so she made sure we all learned how to tap dance and sing. She would gather the grandchildren and they’d sing and dance to ‘California Here I Come!’”

In December 1974, Linda, Barbara and their sister Janice came to the Fisher to see Lynn Redgrave in the musical My Big Fat Friend—but her unborn nephew Jeremy had another plan. Halfway through the per-formance, Jeremy’s mother Janice went into

n December 4, 1956, the future rock n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and

Carl Perkins gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the great-est jam sessions ever. Million Dollar Quartet brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Six-teen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Matchbox,” “Fol-som Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog” and more.

Earlier this year, WJR’s Lloyd Jackson interviewed Robert Britton Lyons, who has played Carl Perkins in the production since it began as a workshop in Seattle in 2006 through its successful run on Broadway. Lloyd Jackson: Does being in this show make you feel like you’re traveling back in time?Robert Britton Ly-ons: One of the big joys I get from this show is that we get to play this music that these guys were inventing in the mod-ern context, and what that does is bring a relevance to the his-tory and birth of rock n’ roll to all the music that you hear on the radio today, Top Forty included.LJ: What’s it like to portray Carl Perkins?RBL: It’s a blast, throughout the process I learned quite a bit about the man, and what I’ve come to understand is that he was one of the most generous and gracious people you’d meet, as well as an incredibly talented song-writer and musician. It’s hard to compare it to the difficulties in playing someone like an Elvis Presley, or Johnny Cash. The direction has always been to never be impersonators; we are people who inhabit these characters so you never get an impersonation of any of these guys which is quite refreshing.”LJ: When you talk about the contribution

that Carl Perkins made to music, how do you bring that across to the fans who are maybe too young to have heard of Carl Perkins?RBL: Most people have heard of “Blue Suede Shoes.” Carl Perkins actually wrote and recorded the song before Elvis did it and made a humongous hit out of it. Elvis’s ver-sion eclipses Carl’s because he was able to perform it on television. He also influenced later bands like the Beatles, who went on to cover several of Carl’s songs, and he influ-enced a wave of the British invasion.LJ: How has this show inspired you?RBL: I’ve been inspired as an actor and a musician to play in a context of a band.

This is by far the best band I’ve ever played in, and I’ve played with a lot of them. The fact that we get to play eight times a week to-gether makes for an incredibly tight unit.LJ: How will De-troiters be able to relate to this show?RBL: Detroit is a music town and this is a music show. You’re not going to see a pit orchestra playing behind the scenes with actors pretending to play the music. You’re going to get the ac-tors themselves as the musicians. It’s a

live band on stage. Elvis might break a string and they have to work in a string change into the show. It’s just a big ol’ party, and the his-tory of rock n’ roll, and how these four guys came to meet at Sun Records, and their rises to fame and subsequent departures. It’s a his-tory lesson and a rock concert—and a hell of a good time.
