Since the Fosters brothers brewed thefirst distinctive Australian lager in 1888the fame of Australia's favourite beerhas grown around Australia and aroundthe world .

Foster's was first exported to SouthAfrica during the Boer war . Today youcan get a Foster's from Baghdad toBangkok, San Francisco to Singapore .

It's by far the biggest sellingAustralian beer in Britain .

One .of the top 10 selling imports inthe U .S.A.

Sold in every Australian state,Foster's outsells every other Australianbrand of beer .

Australia's ~771"UG,

\t the half way mark of the season, it looks very, liiticult to predict the four . Any of the top six could

itbutDeL ahe Blues areppla y playing wellt they have aa eve

nthe of

und to make up .

Sc otch took over top position when they beat

(, ollegians by 9 points at Harry Trott . Co ll egiansirted well and led by l6 points at quarter time, but

Scoteh kicked the first 5goals in the second quarternJ led by 14 points at one stage though Co ll egiansu,~ht back to trail by just I point at half time . Both

s added 5goals in a. good third quarter and Collegians~,"Iined the lead three quarter time, by 3 points . It"Q, t nip and tuck in the last quarter but 2goals in the,,,,t few minutes gave Scotch victory . Andy Smith11"') ,, good day in the centre for Scotch and FergusNiel had the better of Tim Bennett, even though[ ;, nnct t got three goals .I thought Scotch's best playe r

possibly Ric Senior ; the Lions are missing roverKeith Parsons . Collegians best were defenders Gregparsons, who played a great game, and And rew Wright.vnothergood player was tall wmgmanJeremy Schmidt.

it \c;s a very enjoyable game to watch and coul dgone either way . Both had players missing ;

Collegians were missing Herman and Keith Parsons,~ith injury and Scotch were without Sherwen and1hompson, Marx did his hamstring and Mason was

uuovailable . Another significant return was that ofCcotch forward Scott Nelson - he could be a big-„ct for them .

In me replay of last year's grand final at Elsternwick .

Ormond tuned the tables on De La Salle by 41 points .)lark McDonald had the better of Mick Deveson,,nd finished with 4goals .Geoff Singleton got 6at fullwrward and was given his opportunities byBoy anton,Sutherland and Eishold, all on -ball players . Ritchie

, ndBeard defended we1l .Shane Murphy starred forDe La. and kicked 5 goals and Mick G reen continuedhis good comeback in the ruck .Hill and McDonnellwere steady across the centre but overall De La werequite disappointing .

The upset of the day was up at the Universitywhere the Blues trounced third placed Ivanhoe by 69points . Full forward Mary Ty quin starred with 9goals and the Blues had other good half forwards inRoger Curnow and Don McInnes . Grutnter con ti nuesto impress in the ruck and Tun Carey was solid indefence . Alan Salter would not have enjoyed thereturn to the University but he was gracious in defeatand told the Blues that he could not understand theirlowly position on the ladder . His better players wereruckman Wally Dulevskis, wingman Tim Donohueand half backs Greg Cameron and Tony Course .

Old Xaverians ran out of time and failed by just 3points to upset Bulleen Templestowe . Bulleen'; greateraccuracy and earlier ascendency proved just enough .Bullants Stephen Pace was again on target with sixgoals and Steve C urtain got 4, all in the desparate lastquarter .Kaniro,Delan ty and Gilmore were impassablefor three qua.rters for Bulleen and for the Xavs Ry anand Barry were great triers .

At the Brens Ova],North's seven goal burst in thethir quarter was the main difference in their 49pointwin over St . Bernards . The experienced players atNorth,Borcich,Grif fi n and ORourke did well asdidnewcomer Ball . For the Saints their best was againcaptain Gary McAllister, and Grbac and Wood weregood contributors too .

The likely winners in A Section :

Bulleen-Templestowe v UNIVERSITY BLUESST . BERNARD S v Old Xaverian sORMOND v North Old BoysOLD SCOTCH v De La. SalleIVANHOE v Collegian s

And in B Section :OLD BRIGHTON v Old ParadiansST . KILDA v Caulfield Gram .Kew v PARKSID EAjax v MARCELLI NUNIVERSITY BLACKS v Old Melburnian s

VAFA 1w WAThe VAFA was defeated by 9points by the VFA in

the fourth annual Victorian Football Cup clash : E,in which football was the winner .

The crowd a.t Preston was estimated at 5 .000 .Everyone left feeling that the game was a thoroughlyA)sorbing and worthwhile affair . in spite of the verycold . blustery conditions .

The VAFA s original squad of 25 was badly depleted .Six players were unavailable : Kiel (thigh), Gilmore(knee), De Marte (thigh), Spillane (ankle), Mik e

McDonald (virus) and Peter Gi ttos for family reasons .That left 19 players, so three more got their chance :James Garde (Blacks ruckm on), Tim Cooke (De La .Salle utility) and Rick Garde (Blacks ruckman ),TimCooke (De La Salle utility) and Rick Van Den D ri est(Bulleen-Temp halfback) . Ormond's Alan Naylorwas the unlucky player to miss the 21 .

The vAF,A lined up a. little differently from theselected side .Considine was in the forward pocket, and Deveson in the back pocket . But changes had to

be made fairly quickly as the VFA got off to a goodstart kicking with the breeze .Ol2iley looked verydangerous up forward so Mike G reen moved Considineon to him and Deveson to the back flank where hebecame a good player .

The VFA kicked 7 goals in the first term, but theAmateurs did well to kick 4goals into the stiff breeze, and trailed by 22 points at quarter time .

The VAFA attacked for the first part of the secondterm, but it was the VFA who increased their lead to31 points early in the second term . The VAFA wasstruggling . Van Den D riest earn eon to the back flankand he provided a lift and the Amateurs slammed on5 goals, with the busy Eishold levelling the scores atthe29minute mark . CentremanAndy Smy the hadbeen instrumental in lifting the VAFA .

The VFA supporters behind me were pleased thatit was a. close game . that the VAFA were making agame of it . But, as the third quarter were on and theVAFA got on top with more desperate play theyweren't so impressed and voiced their disapproval ofthe men in white . It was a. great quarter by theAmateurs as they increased their lead to 20 pointsinto the breeze . It was a much better game in thesecond half and the crowd had come to life . MarkMcDonald was coming into it at centre half forwardand Rohan Brown was on top in the ruck . MarkMcDonnell was on top on his wing and StephenClark was a. desperate rover . But at the 23rd minutemark of the third quarter . Gary Brice made twomoves which probably changed the course of thematch . The effect of Ian Rickman coming onto theforward flank was obvious ; he provided a. big lift . Butthe departure of Neil Jordan from the back pocketdid not mean the end of his contribution . The VFAclawed their way back to trail by 13points at the finalchange, but the Amateurs had the breeze in the lastterm .

Eishold kicked the first goal at the 3 minute' markand the lead increased to 19 points . But it was to beour last goal .Brice broughtJordan on and put him onthe ball, and he began to take over as Brown had runhimself into the ground . Ian Rickman continued tobe a focal point for the VFA and with Considine offthe ground . O'Riley began to come into it . TheVAFA battled hard but theydidn't have the legs to goon with it and the VFA hit the front at the l8minutemark . There were still chances to win but Lumieisisealed it for the VFA with agoa.l just before the siren .The VFA supporters behind me were relieved, butthey had great admiration for the spirited display byour players and a. healthy respect for the VictorianAmateur Football Association . Well done ! The gamewas played in the right spirit - a credit to bothcompetitions . Perhaps Blues fullback Pat Salingertypified the effort - he kept full forward MarkFothe ringham to just one goal . They deserve yoursupport in future matches .

THe VAFA's U .18 team lowered its colours forthe first time in going down to the VFA by 29 points .In a. game marred by the wind and a heavy rain stormthe VAFA started slowly and made little use of thestrong breeze with the result it was well down at halftime. In the second half the team showed greatendeavour and whittled away their opponents leadbefore finally succumbing to a bigger better andstronger side .

To coach Trevor Read his selectors Mark Wallers(Chairman), Bill McNamara and Chris Hibbert plusteam manager Greg Miles, and Property StewardRex Doran the Association expresses its appreciationfor the hours of work put into the team who althoughbeaten, were far from disgraced .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1985

~e Whisper ReturnsIts certainly nice to be back and before looking at

i h]s week s games I m ust thank Robert Lamb and thettniversity Blues for my 4 week break . Two glorious~,,-eks on the Gold Coast and 2 in the garden so I'ms,veet on the home front . Much has happened in the,,,,,nth I've been off . A Section has proven very even; Ithough not as much as B or E and Old Trinity,{,?serve special praise being the only club in the.Association undefeated in the Seniors and Reserves .

They tell me Stuart Stockdale has a. grin that woulddo him justice at Luna Pa.rk !

Back to A Section Blues again provided the upsetwith a most impressive and I dare say forDave Fosterand Peter Schauble encouraging win over Ivanhoe .Blues are really on the improve which now placestremendous pressure on old Xavs and St .Be rnards ifthey're to remain in the big time .

Did you a11 get onto the Co ll egians coach's remarkslast week . He told Peter French that Old Scotch,Ormond and De La Sa lle would make the finals andeither Ivanhoe, North OB or his own side . Prettyhonest fellow is Bruce Ferguson . Speaking of thefinal 4 in A Section the Whisper's four is : Ormond,O .Scotch, Ivanhoe and North OB .Controversial enough?Bulleen-Temp is the only side capable of upsettingthat selection and Ivanhoe would be the crowd tomiss .

Looking now at todays matches . After a. week'sspelllvanhoe at home will be too tough forCollegians .The Hoe are hard to toss at the Boulevard and needthis win to stay with the leaders . So too do Coll egiansbut their attitude is pretty ordinary and they can onlyseem to win on dry days at Elsternwick Park andHarry Trott .

In a. promotor's dream of a. roundDe La Salle whoare really at th cross roads meet leaders Old Scotch .How the Ca.rdina.l's will love their beer tonight . Afteraccounting for their visitors whose days of powerandglory are now all in the past . Scotch will reallyconsolidate their position amongst the leaders anddeal yet another blow to De La Salle who have somany players down on form . Scotch have been hardhit by injuries lately and yet have been able to call onReserves to fill the bill which says much for theirdepth . De La on the other hand have been forced torush Mick Green back and have Phil Kerin undecidedon his football future .Har ri ngton and Skipper Maherare down on form and the loss of Lowe who has beensorely missed has cost De La. much mobility . Thebright spot for De La. has been the VAFA's recognitionof their champion Shane Murphy who has been agreat credit to his club in particular and the Associationin general . Well done Murph on your most warrantedappointment as State Captain . Scotch will welcomethe return of Mason and Sherwen and even if there issome doubt of Kiel his onfield presence will do m uchfor the Cardinals for whom Hodge and Smith are infine touch .

North will find out just how good they really areafther their visit to the Gunn Reserve .I d be a. m ug towrite them off especially as Gus Carrall and Paul

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1985

Considine are having fine seasons and should givethe North little men first use of the ball but reallybeating Ormond at Ormond its really not on, especia.llvafter witnessing the form of the team against De La afortnight ago and the manner in which its staterepresentatives played against the VFA . It comesdown to this Ormond have more experience moredepth and more talent and in a crisis McArthur-Allenhas more to call on than Jim Durnan .

Bulleen-Templestowe faces a. real danger gameagainst the rapidly improving University Blues . Itpromises to be a fine match as a . win is imperative toboth clubs for entirely different reasons . Bulleen-Temp cannot afford to step any further behind thecompetition leaders whilst the Blues will be anxiousto draw away from relegation candidates St-Bernardsand Old Xave ri ans . The outcome of the game couldlie with Greg Kazouro who is bound to be given thebig task of minding Mark Ty quin, although Zemskimay be tempted to rush Gilmore back . The Bluescan expect Salinger to nullify Stephen Pace and wi llhave a. winner on one wing in Nugent . Polkinghornewill not have to contend with Clark who is reportedto be trying out at Essendon and if Demarte plays hisfitness would be suspect so with the edge around thepacks . I'm tempted to go for the Blues . The more Iwrite and reflect on this game the more I m sure itwill be the match of the day and the game for yourstruly to sneak out and look at . I11 stick with myhunch and no for the Blues .

St . Be rnards v Old Xaverians . What a game andhow much hangs on this for both clubs . The homeground advantage and tenacity of St . Bernards arethe Saints greatest asset but the return of Nick Wiltonand the realization that a loss would almost certainlyput the club in B Section next year plus their greatertalent should see the Xavs home in what will be aphysical game . Nick Bourke has settled in quicklyand proving a. most versatile player, whilst youngstars Vaughan Carlin,Paul Curtain, and Mark Beat tieplus the agression of Tony Barry will provide enoughenthusiasm for an Old Xav victory . As I said earlier, any A Section match today will be a crowd pleaserand I hope to see you there .

In B Section we have certainly seen a . change ofpa.ce .Parkside has lost its way of late whilst Caulfieldand OMs have emerged as the sides to beat . I've notwritten off theDevils who have signed former interstateand Alphington ruckma.n Lau ri e Stretton who withGoran Yoksich now gives the club the best ruckcombination in the section . However Parkside hassome hard work to do as I believe the double chancewill be vital for the Clubs with promotion thoughts .Marce ll in is another side who ve improved out of .sight in recent weeks and will certainly trouble allteam s and may even steal a spot in the 4 at the end ofthe year . Perhaps the biggest disappointment hasbeen the Blacks who appear to have a for better sidethan last year but have not been able to win matches .Certainly they have the talent and if any club iscapable of storming home and throwing out a. challengeit will he Uni . Bla.cks .The Blacks are the sort of teamwho rival coaches will be pleased to see well out ofharms way .

5

Page 4: OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF TH E VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASS OCIATION · Amateurs did well to kick 4goals into the stiff breeze, and trailed by 22 points at quarter time . The VAFA attacked

The whisper's B Section selections today are :Old Paradians in a turnup, Ca ulfield to win the matchof the day against St . Kilda . Parkside over Kew .Marcellin against AJAX and Blacks to surpriseOM's .

In C Section the Bany isle Fawkner game will beworth going rules to see, and as 111 be in the area. IProbably will .Brockwell hasBany tile on the boil andaevkner may experience the taste of losers beer by 5

pm today . St . Kevins who have had a disastrousseason will grab a valuable 4 points against Monashat Righetti oval and Therry at home will be untroubledby the Rovers . Old Halley bury in ust beat OldCamberwell to have any hope of a finals appearancebut Schwab has the 'wells a real promotion chanceand they're unlikely to falter even at McKinnon .Finally Thomastown are the obvious victors overCoburg .

The two main games in D Section are at AlbertPark where Balaclava are bound to worry WestBrunswick add with the fear of dropping from the 4hanging over them should have enough incentive tobeat est . In the other game Old Mentonians havethe huge task of upsetting leaders Old Trinity . Even

E WHISPERS VIEW OF THE VITA MATCHWere we Stiff or just Not Good Enough ?

Probably a bit of both although the fact that theyhad 14 more frees was not lost on me . Young SimonEishold played a ripper and Mark McDonald wascertainly the class player in both sides . However theWhisper's best was vice captain and O .M's skipperRohan Brown . He almost rucked all day and was agreat example to his team .Johnny Kanis,Guy Ritchieand Andrew Smy the can all hold their heads high ascan the Uni . men Pat Sa linger and James Garde .

Anyway its all in the past now and Michael (sreenhas got to lift em for the Carnival . With a few starshopefully over injuries, we're sure to defend the titleof Amateur Champions and win the MelbourneCarnival before tackling the Country boys .

Personality Pars100 GAMES AT ORMOND

Geoff Russe ll from the Ormond football club iscongratulated by the clubs players and supporters onplaying his 100th game today . Geoff commencedplaying at Ormond in the junior sides where he m adehis mark by winning best and fairest awards in boththe under 13s and under 19s . Geoff has played in boththe senior and reserve teams and is currently a regularmember of the senior team . Geoff usually plays inthe centre and is renowned for his fierce tackling andfearless play . We wish Geoff all the best for today'sgame and hope he continues playing many moregames for Ormond .

RECORD TO TONNERS EVERGREENOwen Mills takes to the field today, against Old

Paradians, for the 267th time which eclipses his "bestmate's"Barry Hamilton, club record .ALthoughlookingmore battle torn than ever and having lost much ofthat pace which allowed him to dominate the wings .Owen shows that he is still a top player having recentlyreturned to the Seniors for a couple of games . Owenfirst played in 1969 winning the Under 19's B & F . Hehas played in both of Brighton's Senior premiershipsand has since shown up many a person who thoughthe was over-ttae-hill . Congratulations Owen .

200 GAMES TO BRIAN BOURKEDe La Salle's B ri an Bourke will play his 200th

game with the club today against Old Scotch . One ofthe toughest and best players to pull on the Blue andGold jumper . Brian had to be enticed into playingagain this season, and he is showing the form whichmade him one of the most attacking half backs inAmateur football .

Brian started at De La in 1973 and has played 198senior games and one reserve game before today .Honours include an A Section Best and Fairest award .state representation, A grade premiership captain, and in 1984 his twelfth season with De La he finallysnared the senior best and fairest award after being arunner up on several occasions . Only a handful ofplayers have played 200 gam es or m ore at De La andBrian justifably now joins the elite group . He hasbeen a valuable member of the senior side, which hascome through from the Sheehy Era and cont=nuedthrough to the present and helped De La up the topof the amateur competition . Brian has been wellsupported by his wife Gaye and his father Laurie whoare always on the boundary to support and encouragehim of a Saturdav . Well done on a fine achievement, and I'm sure all the senior players will be doing theirbest to commeqiorate your milestone with a big winover Old Scotcl}, and everyone at De La hopes youplay many more games for the club .

100 AT A .N.Z. BANKAll at A .N .Z . Bank congratulate Ch ris "Pommie"

Riley on playing his I00th game today against Clayton .Chris started his career with ANZ in 1980 and sincethen has improved his skills greatly to become aregular senior player . A feature of his game is hisprodigious kicking with either foot . Chris who is inhis third year as club secretary is a hard worker in amost demanding job . Onceagain "Pom"congmtulationson your fine achievement and may there be manym ore .

100 FOR JOEL HARRI SJoel reaches his milestone having come up thr,,tl„1

;the 19s and reserves to make his mark in the sellteam . Joel was starting to hit his straps last se,,swhen a serious ankle injury sidelined him form,,,',",'the season . A dedicated effort in the off season j,,, ;resulted in Joel having a bumper year so far .

50 GAMES AT THERR YTherry would like to congratulate Michael Taylorand Matthew Oltourke for reaching their 50th gan ,

with the club . Both players have progressed from tit;

U 19s to the seniors over the last year and both arepresent enjoying an excellent season .

on playing his 50th game today . Mark started Parkside in 1982 and was appointed captain of ou

rjuniors . Mark also finished 2nd Best and Fairest inthe juniors . Mark has progressed to the seniors whet, his style of play is typical 'Parkside . Mark has quicklylearnt the art of drinking whilst at Parkside . Mostgood judges rate his drinking ability above his footb .,llability . Seriously Mark is a well liked boke and khighly thought of at Park side . May there be another50good games for Parkside . Well done Mark .

50 GAMES AT HEATHERTO NIt has taken Wayne `Herbie' Elliott 5 years to

achieve this milestone due to injury and workcommitments . Last year he did not play at a11 becausehe was pencilling for a. bookm a.ker on Saturdays . Heis a. jack of all trades and a m a.ster of none, however,at present he is the manager of Charger Promotions,a thriving new business . Most of his football has beenplayed on the backline but on the odd occasion h,,sbeen switched to the forward line to add a touch ofglass and experience . This man has calfs as big aslethal Leigh's thighs, that is not his only claim tofame . Herb'won the Downlow'in 1984 . This is anaward given to the worst behaved player on theannual trip away .At social functions 13erbie'continuesthis trend of strange behaviour and often leads theboys into outbursts of JumpingJack Flash 'and other60's type songs . From all the players . committemen, friends and Tasmanians, well done Wayne and hopefullythe next 50 won't take so long .

WELL DONE ROBBIERobbie Hill ran his 300th game as Boundary Umpire

for the Bulleen Templestowe Amateur football clubagainst D .L .S .O .C . on 18.5 .85 . Robbie has been withthe club since 1977 and has run most of the Reservesand Senior Games since then . He would have to beone of the fittest men in white within V .A .F .A . ranksand has always put his name into the V .A .F .A . to runthe boundary during finals . A most popular youngman who always lets the Hieraehy'know what hefeels is right or wrong with the team .

From all players, officials and supportersajob welldone Robbie and may there be many more kilometresleft in those skinny legs .

As the amateur season gradually unwinds therehas been a change in the position of reporter at theCollegians football club . Peter Mitiord the previousincumbent of this job, due to a succession of deflamatoryarticles (according to Peter "Lumbering"Llmipson)and in recent times no articles at all has had to passover the reigns of this once powerful position to amore lucid and eloquent author, because of burgeoningbusiness, home and football club responsibilities .

Collegians all th an k Peter for his contributions asreporter over the past years for they have been of aconsistently high standard with amusing anecdotesspread liberally throughout . Well done Peter !

The new Collegians reporter is Robe rt Oliphant.Noted little for any conceptual grasp of even thebasic points of English, the opportunity was madetoo good to refuse due to a substantial reduction inmy club subscription .

Coaching appointments are the same as last yearwith the exception that John "Moodey"1Vloodie hasstepped down as Reserves coach for Keith Lugg .`i~foodog "coached the reserves for two years finishing3rd in his first year and out of the four last season .Although not achieving a premiership the value of`lvioondogs"coaching is shown by the number of ex-reserves players now performing well in the seniors .Well done "Moondog" !

Keith Lugg, the new Reserves coach played withCollegians in the seniors between 1965 and 1970 .Since then Keith has had varied coaching appointmentsincluding Clifton Hill, Blackburn United and BoxHill North . Everyone at Collegians extends you awarm welcome Keith and we wish you all the best .

Two players who held senior responsibility lastyear have had to step down this year . Mark Hibbinsclub captain for the past two years has migrated toWestern Australia to get a tan and further pursue his

football career . Thanks Mark for your efforts overthe past years and all the best in WA .

Tlw Bennett senior vice captain last year has hadto step aside this year because of expanding work andpersonal committments . Thanks also Tim for yoarefforts last season and we know you will still displaythe same leadership and responsibility, just be morecareful with your saline solution .

Great to see Glen Cook at the past two games afterfive weeks in hospital and several operations on hisback . Cooky is out of football for the rest of theseason and all at Collegians wish him a speedy recovery,We will certainly miss your experience and talkingon the field (although the nurses at the hospital won'tmiss him as indicated by the fact they took away hisbuzzer,') .

50 GAMES AT OLD PARADIANSCongratulations from all at Old Paradians togtg~n

McCiements, on playing his 50th game today againstOld Brighton . Brendan commenced playing with theclub with the Under 19s in 1981, and has contributeda great deal in the senior ranks since then . We hopethat he will be able to maintain his present form, andwish him the best of luck in achieving the next milestoneat our club .

and then played in the U 19's before moving. into our

Club 18 side .In those days Snvd's carried a lot of weiLht . but was

hard to ,ret around . Playing at full back he notchedup over 50,_ames before breakinL, into the Senior> .Over the past six seasons he has alternated betweenthe Seniors and Reserves . and has proved to be ~,reliable hackman who has good judgement . Marc

John had it similar background in that he playednearly 50 games with our Club 18 before taking thestep into Senior ranks. A talented footballer w'lt :

backs his juduemznt . its been a pity that John ha\been plagued by injury and illness . maybe more regulartraining, would overcome this . John has contributedgreatly to the finance of the club and it is hoped th :rwe will hear his voice around the club for another :"
