OPW – scale of ICT
- HQ is Trim, Co. Meath
- 1,200 no. users
- 125 no. sites
- Multidisciplinary organisation
Currently
- Started roll-out in 2005
- 800 no. users
- Feedback generally positive
Future
- All new PCs will have LibreOffice only
- Using WPKG to push out updates
- What file type to use (ODT, DOC, DOCX?)

Also – central Government, by and large has
migrated to MS-Office 2007 and upwards
No mention of Open Source anywhere in eGov
Strategy 2012-15!
- 1,200 no. Thunderbird users (Lotus Notes
server)
- Migrating Notes server to Zentyal/Zarafa
- Target is 400 no. users in 2013
- Thunderbird & Web browser
- Mozilla Firefox installed on PCs by default
- Invited volunteers in August 2012
- Started pilot in August 2012 (20 no. users)
- Excluded professional staff due to AutoCad
- Reviewed December 2012 – feedback very
positive
- Additional 10 no. users now being added
- Management tools (e.g. Puppet)

Instant Messaging
- Currently being piloted in ICT Unit
- Seeking 30 no. volunteers in OPW for a pilot
- Decided on Openfire server
- Will trial different IM clients (e.g. Pidgin, Spark,
Jitsi etc.)
- Currently in pilot (but effectively live)

- Needs to tie in with proposed records
management policy
- Needs to incorporate workflows & business
processes
