Office of Faculty Development Assessment Plan
The Office of Faculty Development assessment plan encompasses all major activities carried out during an academic year. The plan is tied to the Office’s mission and goals and includes objectives, outcomes, and specific metrics for each activity. The Office is transitioning to an assessment plan tied more directly to the University’s strategic goals for use beginning 2013-14. We use our plan to guide our assessment procedures on an on-going basis. For regular workshops and panels we use participant satisfaction and perceived mastery of learning objectives (assessed using end-of-program evaluation forms.) We also track attendance for all offerings to measure our coverage and aid in planning future offerings. For longer and more extensive programs such as Peer Coaching, participants receive a more detailed electronic end-of-program survey that additionally gathers qualitative data on the participants' experiences in the program. This data is then analyzed and summarized in order to determine improvement strategies and programming needs. For more intensive programs such as the Summer Institute, focus groups of participating faculty are conducted in addition to daily satisfaction and outcome measures. In our longer term programs, such as the Certificate of Reflective Teaching, we use surveys to look at satisfaction and participant self-reported changes resulting from involvement. We keep ongoing counts of these metrics throughout the year and annually review and revise as needed. In addition, we monitor our web offerings through review of traffic and page statistics. For activities such as faculty awards and Thank a Teacher, the Office tracks and reports the number of nominees, reviewers, and recipients. We provide a written report of our results at the end of each academic year. (The full report will be available in June 2013.) We use quantitative and qualitative perception and learning feedback from participants to make formative and summative programmatic changes. We use attendance data to monitor the breadth of program reach and to assist in assessing needs. All data collected is used to make decisions about what types of programs should continue to be offered, which programs should be discontinued, where changes need to be made, and when programs should be offered, etc. We make the Office’s programmatic decisions based on these metrics along with guidance from the University Strategic Plan and our combined expertise in the field.
