Lent is a time of recognizing our blindness and seeing again

Practices: Prayer - Personal prayer, Rosary, daily Mass

Fasting - Giving up some activity, food or bad habit Almsgiving - Providing for the needs of others with time or Money

Regulations:Days of abstinence from meat include Ash Wednesday and all

Fridays of Lent (14 years of age and older) Days of fasting include Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (18 years of age and not yet 59) Days of optional fasting include Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday

Fasting: Only one full meal is allowed. 2 other

small meals are allowed that do not equal another full meal. No eating between meals.

Abstinence: No meat on Fridays during Lent.

Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not apply.

RCIA Scrutinies - The scrutinies, are rites for self-searching and repentance which will be celebrated at the 9:30AM Mass on Sundays,

March 24th, 31st and April 7th. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, Who is the way, The truth, and The Life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all.

RICA Escrutinios - Los escrutinios, son ritos para el auto-examen y para mover al arrepentimiento y primordialmente una finalidad

espiritual que se celebran los Domingos 24, 31 de marzo y 7 de abril durante la Misa de 12:30pm. Los escrutinios tienen por objeto el descubrir y posteriormente el sanar todo aquello que es débil defectuoso o pecaminoso en los corazones de los elegidos; y resaltar y luego fortalecer todo lo que es recto, fuerte y bueno. Los escrutinios se celebran a fin de librar a los elegidos del poder del pecado, de protegerlos de la tentación, y de darles fuerza en Cristo, quien es El Camino, La Verdad, y La Vida. Estos ritos, por lo tanto deben ayudar a la conversión total de los elegidos y a profundizar su resolución de mantenerse estrechamente unidos a Cristo y de proseguir con mayor decisión en su esfuerzo por amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas.

MID-LENT CHECK-IN

God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you . . . The Lord, the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrection, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance involves working to secure justice for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit.

MITAD DE CUARESMA, ¡REGISTRATE!

Dios dice a Moisés, “Yo soy el que soy. Explícaselo así a los israelitas: ‘Yo soy’ me envía a ustedes’. El Se-ñor, el Dios de sus antepasados, el Dios de Abrahán, el Dios de Isaac, el Dios de Jacob” (Éxodo 3:14, 15). Como

Jesús diría luego, Dios no es un Dios de muertos sino de vivos y así creemos que los muertos resucitarán un día. En esta tiempo, la mitad de la Cuaresma, hacemos una pausa para considerar cómo nuestro arrepentimiento nos lleva a la Resurrec-ción, a nuestra reunión con el gran ‘Yo soy’. Parte de nuestro arrepentimiento su-

pone trabajar para asegurar la justicia para todos y ayudar a nuestro prójimo para vivir de acuerdo a la voluntad de Dios. Nos animamos y cuidamos unos a otros; así como el jardinero compasivo del Evangelio de hoy, quien dice al dueño de la huerta que él cuidará el árbol, lo fertilizará y quizá pueda dar fruto.

Attention Parishioners Due to sewer piping repairs in the parish office, the parish office will be temporarily moved to the RCIA Office room 104 beginning Monday, March 18th through Friday, March 29th. The office is located on the 1st building behind the Church, next to the parking lot gates, on your left hand side. Office Hours will remain the same Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 8:00pm, Saturdays 9:00am to 5:30pm and Sundays 9:00am to 12:30pm.

LITURGICAL GIFT BEARERS

One of the important parts of the Mass is the Consecration of the unleavened

Bread and Wine to become the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. These

Bread and Wine are brought to the Altar by GIFT BEARERS who represent our

parish community in returning to God a small portion of the many blessings

that He has given to us. These gifts that are brought to the altar challenge us

to give ourselves in thanksgiving for everything that God has given us.

To be a gift bearer then is an honor and a privilege to represent the communi-

ty. The role of a Gift Bearer is a beautiful way for individuals and families to

participate in the Eucharistic Liturgy.

As soon as the Prayers of the Faithful are said, the Gift Bearers proceed to the

back of the church and get ready to bring the gifts. The Gift Bearer on the Left

side facing the altar will carry the Wine and will be the first to hand over the

gift to the Presider or Deacon. The Gift Bearer on the Right side carries the

Hosts to be presented next. Once all the gifts are presented, the Presider or

the Deacon, will bless the gift bearers. Then, still standing in a line in front of

the altar, the Gift Bearers bow together toward the altar, turn and return down

the aisle to their seats.

Currently, choosing of Gift Bearers is done by the Ushers. It is possible that

there may be other parishioners who may wish to become Gift Bearers but are

not chosen by the Ushers. In order, then, for more people to be given the

chance to become Gift Bearers, we will do a pilot project at the 9:30 am Eng-

lish Mass where any parishioner willing to become a Gift Bearer to sign up on

a binder that will provided at the back of the church. They can also contact

Jo Valles, Mass Coordinator of the 9:30 am Mass, at (714) 630-4566.

Once you commit yourself to be the Gift Bearer of a particular mass, please

arrive at least 10 minutes before the mass starts and contact Jo Valles to

signify your presence.
