This kind of game works well. It cant help but to be communicative your students will speak at length, and theres an obvious goal. This double crossword game can be used for several targets: 1) Teaching office vocabulary 2) The grammar structure: x is used for y. Place students in pairs. Give out one half to each student. If you have an odd number of students, make a three rather than pairing up with one. You need to be able to monitor effectively. Demonstrate how this activity works. Explain a word to the students using the structure: X is used for Y e.g. a ruler is used for drawing lines or something like that. Note that there is really no difference in using the gerund (used for drawing) and the infinitive (used to draw). Before students begin, pre-teach Whats three down?, so that students are able to ask for specific words. Students should take turns. Set a time limit of 15 minutes or so. Additional Ideas Ashomework,youcouldaskstudentstomakeacrosswordoftheirown.Itwouldntneedtobeatwo-persononelikethis.Instead,astandardformatcrosswordwould workwell,withthecluesfollowingthe target structure.
