Did You Know?
The hickory tussock moth caterpillar can be found in Southern
Ontario. This 5 centimeter critter is white with black markings
and covered with tufts of spiky hair. These tufts are poisonous
and serve as a defense against predators. However, they can
cause skin irritation in humans, similar to the effects of poison
ivy.
If you touch one, wash with soap and water immediately. If
you have a mild skin reaction, apply ice or calamine lotion.
Anyone suffering a serious reaction should seek professional
medical treatment.

Did You Know?
Blacklegged ticks (aka deer ticks) can spread Lyme disease. Early
signs include a bulls eye rash from the bite site, chills, fever, headache,
muscle and joint pain.
Very similar symptoms to the flu.
Avoid ticks if possible. Wear light clothing and tuck pant legs into
socks. DEET is the only insecticide approved for sale in Canada that
wards off ticks.
If you suspect you have symptoms of Lyme disease, DO NOT let your
physician convince you that you are OK. Early treatment means a
quicker recovery.

Your Safety Flares are approved for four years from date
of manufacture. This means that your flares need to be
replaced every third or fourth year—It’s the Law.
You may NOT dispose of expired flares in the trash, nor
may you fire them.
Disposing of expired flares has always been
difficult. This year, Transport Canada teamed up with
CPS-ECP and selected CIL dealers who hosted Safety
Equipment Education and Flare Disposal Days. Please
check out www.cps-ecp.ca for details on where you can
go.
IF you cannot find a date/location near you, please ask you
local Police department or Fire department. They are usu-
ally willing to dispose of them for you.
As of the end of July, there have been 12,531 student participate in the Ontario Hunter Education
Program. At this time in 2013, there had been 12,500 and in 2012—9,993. This incredibly suc-
cessful program continues to see stability.

London during June. Years of Service plaques were presented and TWO Instructors received
recognition for 55 years of service.

Did You Know?
Opposums are marsupials that range in size from a small
mouse to a house cat.
They are opportunistic omnivores.
Gestation is 12 to 14 days and once born, the offspring
must find their way into the pouch.
As many as 13 can attach to the teat and are weaned be-
tween 70 and 125 days.
When an opossum is threatened or harmed, it will “play
possum”, mimicking the appearance and smell of a sick or
dead animal. This is an involuntary physiological re-
sponse (like fainting). Baby opposums don’t necessarily
react in this manner.
Opposums have opposable “thumbs” on their rear feet,
similar to primates.
Their mouth holds an impressive 50 teeth.
The OFAH is currently seeking a passionate and hardworking individual to join the OFAH in partnership with Long Point Provincial Park and Long Point Waterfowlers' Association as the Waterfowl Unit Technician. The successful applicant will have considerable knowledge of federal and provincial hunting regulations and applied expertise/experience hunting migratory birds. CALL TO ALL MEMBERS
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Zone J is seeking nominations for the Annual OFAH Zone J Outstanding Achievement Award.
Deadline for Nominations is December 31, 2014 This award is to recognize an individual’s outstanding effort towards Stewardship, Conserva-tion, and/or the promotion of angling or hunting in Southwestern Ontario as selected by the OFAH Zone J membership. Members of OFAH Zone J may nominate anyone, does not have to be an OFAH member, for this award. Nominees for the 2014 award may be submitted to the Zone J Secretary/Treasurer no later than December 31, 2014. Please include a description of the work the nominee has done as well as photos, news articles, etc. The Zone membership will vote on the winner at the January 2015 Quarterly meeting at the German Canadian Hunting and Fishing Club, with the winner being announced at the Zone J Annual meeting in April 2015 at Tavistock and District Rod & Gun Club. We know there are many deserving volunteers who quietly devote their time, energy and money to conservation, hunting and angling within our Zone. Please help us recognize them by submitting a story about their dedication and passion.
OFAH continues to monitor the Environmental Registry Board for relevant postings with potential impacts for our membership. Various forest management reviews are currently available for comment during their second phase of operations. OFAH Staff are confident in reviewing and identifying issues at a high level, however, we require local knowledge to make specific comments (eg: closure of specific roads). We will continue to rely on membership, club and zone input to identify local issues and concerns for forest management plans and other development proposals.
Land Use Issues
The OFAH continues to receive concerns from our members regarding renewable en-ergy, landfill sires, aggregate operations, etc. Staff work hard to research the issues, provide infor-mation and liaise with municipal and provincial gov-ernments. In some cases, the concerns raised are out of scope for direct OFAH involvement/intervention. In these cases, staff do their best to provide members with any available information and contacts from more appropriate organizations. In a few cases, OFAH is asked to become involved in issues well outside our area of influence or interest by individuals or organizations looking to add leverage or clout to their cause. This we cannot do.
