Tuesday, February 3 is the feast of St. Blaise. We will have a blessing of the throats on this day at the 8:00 a.m. Mass and again at 12:00 Noon.
St. Blaise was a bishop who was martyred for witnessing to the faith. He was tortured and beheaded for his beliefs by the local Roman governor around AD 316. The special blessing of throats associated with St. Blaise is due to a miracle attributed to him. While in prison, he miraculously saved a boy choking on a fish bone. Early in the sixth century, evidence exists in the Eastern Church that Blaise was prayed to for ailments of the throat. To this day, his feast is a holy day in the Eastern Church. In the ninth century, veneration of St. Blaise come to the Western Church and became very popular. Blessing of the throats with crossed candles began in the 1500s, the height of devotion to St. Blaise, and that blessing is still part of the devotion of the Catholic Church. St. Blaise is a constant reminder to us of God’s care and concern for us in our weakness, sickness, and limited human existence. God’s healing touch is with us always. St. Blaise’s celebration is one of the ways in which we highlight and thank God for that care and concern.
En Theos Luke's Gospel is the only one to mention the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. What is Luke trying to communicate here and what connection does it have with Mary?
February 2 is exactly forty days after December 25, the nativity of Jesus. Jewish law (Ex 13:2, 12) dictated that Jesus, as the firstborn, be consecrated to God. This was done by the parents as they presented their Son in the Temple. Jewish law further specified (Lv 12:2-8) that a mother was ritually impure after giving birth, and that she had to wait a set period of time (forty days for a boy) before she was to offer a sacrifice to the Lord for purification. The convergence of these two Jewish regulations occasions Luke's account of both the Presentation of the Lord and the Purification of Mary. These days the liturgical emphasis is more on the Presentation of Jesus. Luke highlights the role of Simeon and Anna, two righteous Jews who recognized Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and praised God for being able to see and experience such a marvel in their lifetimes. Simeon's prayer concerning the special role of Jesus states that Jesus is "a light for revelation to the Gentiles." This phrase eventually originated the custom of blessing candles on this day which were to be used in the ceremonies, rituals, and processions throughout the church year. Thus February 2 is also known as Candlemas Day. This day is indeed a rich feast to be savored.

Minute Meditations….
Healthy relationships nourish us and teach us how to love.
Whether these relationships come through family, friend, or a
faith-based group, if we seek, we will find. God will always
lead us to what we need. Our job is to be open and willing to
follow.

SPIRIT LIFTERS
February 1 - Rich is the mercy of our God, and abundantly does he bestow grace upon grace on those who love him. —St. Elizabeth of Schonau February 2 - How should our Lord fail to grant his graces to him who asks for them from his heart when he confers so many blessings even on those who do not call on him? Ah, he would not so urge and almost force us to pray to him if he had not a most eager desire to bestow his graces on us. —St. John Chrysostom February 3 - Grace is the light by which men see the way to walk out of sin; and grace is the staff without whose help no man is able to rise out of sin. —St. Thomas More February 4 - No matter what efforts I make, I cannot die to myself without his grace. I am like a frog which, no matter how high it leaps, always finishes up back in the mud. No matter how hard I try to escape from my self, I always come back to myself and my self-love. Draw me, then, O Lord, draw me after you; for unless you do, I cannot move even one step away from myself. —St. Dominic Barberi February 5 - O most sweet God of my life and the only love of my soul, your overabundance of mercy has led me through the many obstacles I have placed in the way of your love. —St. Gertrude the Great February 6 - It is not enough for me that God has given me grace once, but he must give it always. I ask, that I may receive; and when I have received, I ask again. I am covetous of receiving God’s bounty. He is never slow in giving, nor am I ever weary of receiving. The more I drink, the more thirsty I become. —St. Jerome February 7 - He who aspires to the grace of God must be pure, with a heart as innocent as a child’s. Purity of heart is to God like a perfume sweet and agreeable. —St. Nicholas of Flue

Cycles of Faith
4th Sunday of Ordinary Time
"The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes." Jesus was doing something different. His teaching was new, fresh, surprising. The Jewish people were used to the teaching style of their scribes, the scholars who interpreted the Scriptures and taught the corresponding laws. The scribes were legalists by trade, who focused on what was required of the Jews based on the holy writings. For them, the law was dominant. But when Jesus showed up in the synagogue and began to teach, he was dominant. As the incarnate Son of God, he spoke with an authority that was greater even than the religious laws. And just in case those who heard him doubted his legitimacy, Jesus proved his authority by more than words; he cast out evil spirits. When the people witnessed Jesus commanding "even the unclean spirits" and saw that these spirits obeyed him, they were "amazed" at this "new teaching with authority." What our Jewish ancestors experienced is recorded for us to bolster our own faith. Although we were not there to see these events unfold, if we meditate on the reality of today's Gospel story we will also be astonished and amazed. Jesus is more than a teacher. He is more than a kind man with an attractive philosophy. Jesus has power over the spiritual world! His authority over us is real. And he exercises this authentic authority for our own good. He has the power to do away with evil and to set us free, both through his teachings--passed on to us in the Bible and in the Church--and through his action in our lives. We only need to follow his lead.
